'Multiple sources' back Wii 2 at E3 claims

HD Nintendo console "not a gimmick like Wii"

Following speculative comments from analysts reported earlier today, Game Informer has stepped up citing 'multiple sources' that claim Nintendo will indeed announce a new console this summer.

According to these anonymous sources, Nintendo is preparing to make the announcement at E3 in June 'if not sooner'. They also claim it will be a HD console comparable in power to Xbox 360 and PS3, although GI notes that it's unclear if it'll surpass or fall short of those consoles in terms of processing power.

According to the report, the system is headed for a late 2012 release, but Nintendo is already showing the console to third-party firms in an extra effort to drum up interest and offer plenty of time for development of launch games.

"Nintendo is doing this one right," GI quotes one source as saying, in regards to its support of third party firms on the new machine after being criticised for its lacking support of third parties with Wii and DS.

"[It's] not a gimmick like the Wii," they also added, although they shared no further information on any other features - whether it will be backwards compatible with Wii games, how it will support online and, crucially, how its controller will work.

Elsewhere, Kotaku says it's "heard" the new Nintendo console will be more powerful than the current-gen systems.

Nintendo has issued 'no comment' statements in regards to the rumours, although it apparently signed off an email to GI with "Stay tuned".

There won't be a new Wii at e3 or before, they have only just got the 3DS to market and won't overshadow that by announcing a new console so soon. Why would people go out and pump £200 on a 3DS when they could save that money and put it towards a Wii 2, I'm sure Nintendo won't be that stupid.

i have bought all the Nintendo machines since NES,and the Wii was the first i was disappointed in,i hated it....their new machine would have to be something special if they want me back(if they actually care about little ol' me)

I think it had better be more powerful than current generation consoles, especially if it's not going to have a "gimmick".

Hmmm. I think they did something similar when the Wii was announced as the Revolution. I think the DS was almost released in America. It's still too early to know for sure though

False dawn or what?! People will be expecting PS4's and new Xbox's before long. The Wii is still last gen in terms of hardware and they're merely catching up with what is already out.

Despite its raging popularity, the Wii could well have history look back on it with much distain... it promised so much, but in the end – less than ten 90% rated games just wasn’t good enough.

YES! That's what i'm talking about Nintendo. Claim your hardcore fans back. I'm excited to see what the next Nintendo console will be...and if it's in HD then i'll break my habit and instead of waiting a generation, buy it on the freakin spot.

Hey guess what ive got an anonymous source that sony and microsoft are joining forces to show off a new console at e3 called XStation720Slim, and none of you can disprove it :D

If the Wii is more powerful than the other consoles it might make Microsoft/Sony release new consoles earlier than expected.

That's why nintendo's stock prices are falling. The console is probably a disaster.

I have never been a massive Nintendo fan, something about their kind of Disney image that hasn't sat well with me in the past, plus I didn't like Mario games, ever, until Galaxy on Wii

But that doesn't mean to say I haven't bought and loved some of their products, I still maintain the original Gameboy is the best handheld I've ever played and the SNES, for Street Fighter 2 alone, was brilliant

Plus I recently bought a 3DS - pretty good but desperately needs that new Zelda game and a port of Mario Galaxy please!!!!

For sure Nintendo have had their moment of magic and I've bought into it, but I've never bought their consoles for their 1st party titles, in fact I bought 2 consoles (SNES & 3DS) for Street Fighter (Nintendo have a lot to thank CAPCOM for in terms of my cash money)

Having said all of that, the Wii was literally pants, Nintendo fans can defend it all they want, I simply do not agree, the PS3 is a superior console

Anyways, looking forward to a new gen and hope they encourage a decent array of 3rd party dev titles

Nintendo are going to have to play this very carefully, this machine will need to be absolutely amazing in terms of specs or it'll need another gimmick (ds had a touch screen, Wii had motion control, 3ds had, well, 3d).

Without a gimmick they'll need power, but at this stage they simply cannot come to a par with the PS3/60 and continue to be relevant in the home console market, one of the Wii's main shortcomings was the lack of power (and therefore lack of multiplatform titles), without a gimmick I doubt Nintendo can pull a similar stunt again, the successor to the Wii will have to be, essentially, a next gen console compared to the PS3/60, I can't see how Nintendo can stay relevant otherwise.

S'all very well hating on the Wii but it has worked very well for them at the end of the day.
I'm a bit concerned.. Surely the next Nintendo console has to do something really pushing the boundaries of interface now? I want crazy mad AR headsets and games I can play with my groin!

just because nintendo released the 3DS recently doesn't mean they won't announce a new console. The 3DS is a handheld remember. The wii is tailing off so nintendo are bound to wanna step up their game. Gonna be amazing too, lets face it nintendo are the real innovators in the industry. Everyone else just follows. No matter how the so called hardcore feel about the wii, microsoft and sony must've been crying themselves to sleep over the sales of the Wii and nintendos profits

HELL YES! If it's for real,if it's powerful,if Ninty do the on-line right and if it gets the big third party hitters,it will be the only console i need. Lot of ifs there, can't wait for E3 to find out the truth.

I don't think Nintendo will announce this and overshadow 3DS to be honest.
When they do announce something I'll be really curious to see whether Nintendo will take the same approach they did with the Wii aiming to be affordable, fashionable and maybe with a new innovation. If they do that I'd guess Wii 2 would come close to the 360 and PS3 in terms of power like the Wii wasn't that different to a PS2 or Xbox.

If they step up and compete with Microsoft and Sony directly instead with a machine that plays media, is great online and offers similar power (and 3rd party games) to the PS4 and the next xbox then the next console war will be very interesting.

The 3DS hype has pretty much dried up so E3 would be perfect for Wii 2.
On Eurogamer it says the Wii 2 will be more powerful then the PS3.

Just imagine Zelda in HD O_O

I comprehend the logic you're employing, yet I do not agree that matters are that cut and dried. The hand-held market has existed and thrived side-by-side with the console and PC markets for many years. They each offer different things and many gamers - casual and "hardcore" - seem quite willing to spend money on both. Heck, just look around this forum and you will find claims of people owning two or three current consoles, and those machines are in direct competition with each other.

Furthermore, the 3DS is going up against Sony's new hand-held which may very well appeal at least as much, if not more so, to the "hardcore" crowd (its pricing is bound to have an impact on early adoption rates). Add to that the apparently faltering sales of the Wii (although it admittedly still sells high numbers), and it seems neither impossible nor "stupid" to perhaps release the first next "next generation" console. If Nintendo does do that, the trick - as I see it - will be for the "Wii 2" to be not just on par or slightly more powerful than the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but significantly more powerful and/or capable of offering things the other two console makers do not provide (yet). That will be a fine balancing act that will involve a myriad of factors, not the least of which being pricing and what MS and Sony may have up their sleeves on whichever next console iterations that they have almost certainly been designing and developing for several years by now I reckon.

the only thing that surprises me is the idea that it'd be at e3 this year but if true, bring it on.

rumours of proper 1080p output (not 720p upscaled) and higher performance than this gen is all in line with what i expect from the next nintendo format. i feel it will fall inbetween this gen and the 720/ps4 in terms of power, still,it might have a better shot at battlefield 3 than the current gen.

this could get very interesting. i still have doubts it'll be at e3 but i'm happy to be proven wrong.

anyway even if true,i bet epic still complain about the shader architecture and refuse to put ue on it.

i'm not gonna complain about any projected cost, you get what you pay for.

from ign "...sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions. " source: http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/116/1161875p1.html

i like the sound of that tbh.

This news got me rather excited. As with all next gen console announcement news. I just get all warm and fuzzy inside, thinking about all the 'firsts' I'm about to experience. The first console details, first console pics, first game detsils/screens, first showing, first playing, first unboxing and smelling the hardware. Yeah, ... I always love the smell of new hardware. I remember the smell of the Xbox being the most intense. The 3DS's smell wasn't too bad either. But enough about that  . Or are there more like me around?

I'm ready for the next Nintendo though. I was really excited for the Wii and I am not at all disappointed. Ofcourse there is a lot of shovelware. But all 3 companies have that. The SNES, PS2 and everything had shovelware. Especially the most succesfull of each gen. There are a lot of awesome games for Wii.

A lot of posts seem to be about a console being graphically more advanced/capable means it is more hardcore and appeals to the hardcore gaming crowd. I don't understand. As if the hardcore gaming crowd mostly cares for graphics.

Nintendo should be doing what they do best. Innovate and make great games/consoles. And I trust them to do so.

“Lightning,” the Wii2's main processor, will look a lot like Broadway on steroids and by the time of its release in it will only clock in around 2.2 GHz. While the PlayStation and Xbox follow-ons might hit something near 3.5 GHz or higher, Lightning will do just fine since it's essentially the Wii2's traffic cop. And you don't send the SWAT team for traffic duty.

Sources further flesh out Lightning with a larger 128k L1 cache (split 64k for instructions and data each), a 1 MB on-chip L2 cache, and 550 MHz bus....

Lightning's companion hardware in the Wii will be dubbed “Thunder,” and calling it formidable would be saying the least. Thunder will be connected directly to Lightning and system memory and is actually not a single unit or processor but a small farm of vector, graphics, and physics units.

Instead of a discrete graphics unit, Thunder will house four 128-bit WMX vector units, called “Rumble Units,” that will do physics calculations alongside a Fermi-derived NVIDIA graphics processor codenamed “Tornado.” Tornado will support OpenGL 4, so it's possible that Nintendo might subscribe to this open graphics standard for its next-generation console.

Tornado's Fermi family can also do general-purpose tasks (“GPGPU”) but it's unlikely that Nintendo will tap the processor for anything like this, instead allowing it to focus on an area that met with constant criticism throughout the lifetime of the original Wii: graphics. While Nintendo emphasized “immersive gameplay” and “social gaming,” the fact was that Wii's graphics were anemic compared to its competition.

To that end, Tornado—or at least, its current testing units—sports 2 GB of GDDR5 DRAM and 144 shader units, 24 texture units, and 24 render output units. This positively blows away anything in the current, seventh generation of gaming consoles..."

all conjecture until proven otherwise but if this is where nintendo are aiming for the new machine it will cripple this gens hardware on sheer power alone.
