Following reports that Nintendo is on the cusp of announcing a new home console, new rumors have suggested that the platform holder will adopt Sony's Blu-Ray disc format for its new hardware.
Development sources have told Blu-ray.com that Nintendo is currently looking at using the disc format as its primary optical media of choice, which - if true - would make it the second home console to use it, the other being the PlayStation 3.

Following rumors of a price cut yesterday 'multiple sources' claimed that Nintendo is set to announce a new console this summer.
Our own report indicated the new Nintendo controller is set to include a controller with on-board display.

Better make sure there is a HDD in there too then ... cos BR isnt quick enough for gaming, as proved by the PS3 ...
I'm sure by the time the Wii HD / 2 comes out though BR drives will have caught up speed wise (hopefully).

Blu-Ray will be as fast as DVD by then.

Would anybody be surprised if they used a solid-state media format?

Is it "talk rubbish about the Wii2 and everyone will listen to you" day? Must have missed the memo.

I do think it is getting out of hand.
I am a "believer", as it were but it's looking like everyone is spouting rumours now. There are a couple of decent sources and I think we've heard everything we're going to for a little while so anything else could be debunked until the next source says something plausible.

Yes and no. I don't think Nintendo will fall into the trap of making something unattractively expensive. One of the major appealing factors of the Wii was it's price.
Depends on how much memory we're talking about.

And for that reason they'll probably keep the Wii going as a viable platform, and have this as the high-end alternative.

Just imagine the disappointment this June when Nintendo don't announce a new console at E3 lol.
I love my Wii and can't wait to see where Nintendo go next with their home consoles but I think i'll wait and see on whether Nintendo actually announce their next console at E3. If they do and it features all the stuff that is being rumoured then I will be excited but i'm not gonna get too excited just yet.

That's what I was thinking. A well established platform producing the kind of games that make most people on here sick
It could be a good launch platform of young and small devs trying to cut a break with an easy, relatively cheap platform to work on.

My source told me the Wii 2 will beam 3D straight into your mind so you don't need glasses.... or eyes. And each game will have a different flavour and odour. It also plays smack my bitch up as it's boot up tune.

I promise that if Nintendo bring out a kiwifruit-flavoured console, I will buy it. On day one.

just think how utterly beautiful a mario game could be in 1080p....
i'm not buying this HD screen on a controller lark. there may be a screen but i doubt it will be HD
..so do you think the new snowboarding game will be called 1080 1080?

no,not at all. 16gb sd cards are pretty cheap now and you'd have the advantage of instant loading like the good old days.
there'd be no wear and tear on drives either, just a little blow on the connectors every couple of months to get your game working fine.

As long as Wii games get upscaled then im there ...
There are so many games I go to play on the wii ... but then remember how crap 480p looks and dont bother.
You only have to look at somethnig like this:

to see how a wii game COULD look (and thats only in 720p)

I wouldn't dismiss this so quickly. Nintendo tend to get their disc drives from Panasonic, who just happen to be a major player in the Blu-Ray Association.
So it is in the realms of possibility.

As long as it doesn't use the same method the PS3 does where you must install every game before hand..its the only real downside with blu-ray at the mo.
starvinbull on 15 Apr '11 said:
The PS3 has some of the best games ever made, what are you talking about? If you mean that the current BD drive is slower than DVD drives in other consoles then yes you are right but again, like i said, some of the best games ever made.
damoxuk on 15 Apr '11 said:
Like the DVD when that 1st arrived it was SLOWWWW. Same for Blu-ray hence the drive in PS3 is fairly slow as it came out when blu-ray was just getting going.
But there's now blu-ray players/drives which rival DVD speed's so if Wii2 does have blu-ray i'd guess they would be using a fast drive.
alan666 on 15 Apr '11 said:
they should go for some sort of flash card i think.
starvinbull on 15 Apr '11 said:
Yeah solid state is future proof and massively faster than optical formats but it hasn't worked out for any company wanting a cheap secure format for 10gb+ media products.
It'll come but I'd be surprised to see it in any current or next gen games console. If it hits PC then I think it could become mainstream but again I'd be very surprised.

god i hope it doesnt use blueray it wont sell as good because of the cost of the system..they should start getting into the internet service just like psn and xboxlive thats the future and get streaming and downloading hd movies, games, etc
extracurricular on 17 Apr '11 said:
you don't have to install EVERY game. that seemed to die out pretty quickly. I wish it did tbh. I always install games on the 360 if I'm gonna play them a lot.
Unlikely nintendo would use sonys tech in any form but you never know. I hope it does cuz I love my blu ray.
ste hicky on 17 Apr '11 said:
nintendo tend to partner with matsus**ta for their drives.
i wouldn't worry,panasonic make br drives don't they?

ive seen the future and its solid state not blu-ray nor garlic bread
