Sega Japan's put out a three minute Sonic Generations gameplay video, and two new images, following the Western announcement earlier this week.
As suggested in the earlier teaser trailer, the new game will have both classic Sonic and the modern-day, green-eyed equivalent revisiting classic Sonic levels - in both 3D and 2D side-scrolling.
You can see the first screenshots and details over in our debut Sonic Generations preview.

Damn it, I'm hooked, that looks AMAZING. Cue months of anticipation, followed by eventual disappointment... *sigh*

Right, Sonic this is your last chance. Don't let us down again, or we're tying you in the middle of a busy motorway.

Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. That was almost epic. The classic sonic stage was a little short in comparison to ... the other bit. And the constant "Hyah!" "Hyuh!" noises coming from Sonic were annoying... but other than that this is looking like the game we've been badgering Sega for!!

Classic Sonic parts are worth buying this game for alone, by the looks of it. Looks really close to classic Sonic in terms of physics/control or whatever, more so than Sonic 4.
Even if (when) the modern Sonic stages suck, it looks like the classic ones will be awesome.

looking at that last picture of the two characters next to each other... who the christ would think modern sonic is better?

It seems like Sonic 4 was the testbed for this. They seem to have taken everyones criticisms an board for this game.

They should of just made this a remake of the old-school Sonic games 1-3, and left out the new Sonic parts, I too was really loving that classic bit in the first part, real sense of nostalgia, then they had to bring in the second part with "Hyuh, Hyuh, Hyuh" every second just kills it, but anyway looks really good might actually be the first 3D Sonic I buy.

I dont do comments all that often but this looks bloody awsome, lets hope at the end of the day it turns out as good as this looks so far?

No Big The Cat? ;(
Seriously though this game looks superb, looking forward to seeing later zones and boss-battles,if this game does indeed span the game timeline,it may be possible that we'll have zones from Sonic CD as well
Or the casino themed one from Sonic 2. ^___^
Unless Sega opts for only cherry-picking ones from past titles like Sonic '06 ¬__¬;

Classic sonic bits look lovely! And if you have to have "new" 3D bits, they look about as good they can do. (admittedly I did enjoy Sonic Adventure 2 on DC, but none since)
Classic level Green Hill Zone music remix gets a MASSIVE thumbs up though, it sounds great!

this is the game everyones been after, if anyone so much as moans about it i will personally come round and stick a tails figure up their arses, enjoy

It may have taken over a decade but Sega, imo, have already nailed what the fans want and have been begging for since Sonic and Knuckles. The 2D Green Hill Zone is stunning and the nostalgic feel is awesome. You can even tell the physics are well replicated unlike Sonic 4. As for the 3D levels and modern Sonic, it's Sonic Unleashed day levels style which I thought were brilliant. The two can surely blend together and become the reatest Sonic title of all time!? Don't prove me wrong Sega!
And if you're listening, a remake of Icecap and snowboard in tow would make my day too

You're a bit too critical, I think.
I thought both sets of gameplay looked brilliant, as long as there aren't any warehogs or anything like that, it'll be brilliant.

I don't know what y'all are on about, Sonic 4: Episode 1 was a damn GOOD Sonic game. I'll anticipate good things from Sonic Generations, hopefully.
Balladeer on 21 Apr '11 said:
I honestly can't say anything about the gameplay. Millions of people stand by it and I've never played a Sonic game, so I have no business opening my mouth there.
What I can say is that I find Sonic an incredibly objectionable character. He belongs in an era where developers were trying to seduce the "kidz" with "cool" mascots, and what Sonic had over the rest was that his games were actually good, even if the character wasn't. Hence his survival.
AJDarkstar on 21 Apr '11 said:
Woooow.... new Sonic's voice is more annoying than ever. Gameplay looks cool, I just wish the camera would zoom out more for old Sonic.
snipeshotsamurai on 21 Apr '11 said:
The classic Sonic bits look awesome, especially seeing as the start of it is a 3d recreation of the start of Green Hill Zone Act 1 from the first Sonic.
Noobsaibot on 21 Apr '11 said:
Everything up to 1:16 was beautiful (Even the isometric 3D angle looked tolerable). But then the 3D kicked in and, while it didn't look that bad, I really hope this is mostly side scrolling.
StonecoldMC on 21 Apr '11 said:
OK, just watched the video.
Now who would want to bloody play the new Sonic over the old Sonic? Seriously people, who?! Im taking names and addresses!
sonic_uk on 21 Apr '11 said:
The original Sonic games were at their best when taken a little more slowly, exploring and discovering new routes. They were easier to play slowly as well, although running fast was part of the appeal also. Its nice to see for once Sega have actually listened to their fans...well partly at least. I see the 3d/newer Sonic sections still has the cursed Homing Attack (gggrrrrr - why Sega why???), and I fail to see why we need the new style Sonic at all in a game that is supposed to be about the series returning to its roots. I wish Sega would simply make a side scrolling Sonic game, ditch the 3d sections and the wretched Homing Attack and just make a massive game with awesome graphics, a typical Sonic Japanese Techno soundtrack and some big levels with various routes and secrets.
Still, if this is the best we can hope for for now (officially anyway) then I'm still interested. Will I buy it? Of course. Will I like it? Depends if Sega screw it up. We will see........

Well if this turns out to be s**t. Would Retro Studio's be able to have a stab? After DK Returns, they would seem perfect to get it actually right.

About a minute in my thoughts were "if this turns out bad it may actually destroy my soul". The side-scrolling gameplay looked brilliant, the music, the scenery. I was just picturing all the ways SEGA were going to screw me over again. The amount of f**king Sonic games I've waited for, the amount of times it looked promising...
I don't like the look of the 3D parts at all. But from other gaming sites I've surmised that you have a choice of playing through the levels in 2D or 3D? Can anyone confirm this?
If it's right, I'll actually buy my first Sonic game in years. If I'm forced to play through the 3D crap of the trailer where Sonic runs so fast you win the game by knowing the 'run' button...I'll give it a miss. Again.
Still, back to 2D Sonic...if it plays as good as it looks, I may actually have to take a small break from Skyrim later this year.
Sonic maybe runs a little too fast at times but overall it seems balanced and I'm not going to pick faults with the game if I can play through it side-scrolling.
I agree with sonic_uk entirely. Recent Sonic games have him running too fast and Homing attack, both of which I hate. Only reason I don't have Sonic 4 is the Homing Attack (though I will get it soon). I see the use of it in a 3D game to an extent (though feel they have made it too powerful, but there is no excuse when side-scrolling.

Did he go through a tree at 1:20? I'm a stickler for those sorts of things. Anyway, I wasn't too impressed with Sonic 4, enjoyed the first few stages but the one with the boulders you have to run on just threw me off the game entirely, haven't played it for months. Liking the look of it I have to say, bit concerned about the needless 3D sections though. None of the Sonic fans want those sections..

This looks like pretty good game to me that aside some of u r jus bein whiny old maids. I've been around since sonic first came out and I have no issue with his redesign. I have an issue with the quality of the games but for god sake video game and comic characters always undergo redesigns and changes so deal with it. The constant whining about his damn eyes or the fact that he's talking is what everyone always sees in droves all over the internet and they think every single sonic fan in the world is a whiny crybaby who jus can't let keep up with the times or accept changes. The fact is jus bcuz they brought back the classic design doesnt mean the new one is gettin shelved. Sega also caters to the numerous sonic fans who only know this sonic...a majority of sonics fans these days are kids under 12...they dont even understand the signifigance of the old sonic design they'll probably find it unattractive and sega would lose money on the demographic. At the end of the day its all business and as some of u have st8d u havent been buying the games so u really arent their busness concern...as for the 3d parts as long as they play like the unleashed daytime levels they'll be great and they won't drag the game down at all...well for those of us that advanced with the series...apparently some ppl couldn't adapt to the homing attack or the blaring speed...which makes sense bcuz sonic is known for being...well...fast...anyway in closing stop whining until the game comes out and u know whether or not it sux. As a die hard sonic fan its embarassing the levels of whining i see come from "fello" sonic fans.

The new design of Sonic is the cherry-on-the-top. IF Sonic had a new design and the games were brilliant, people would complain less. People would probably mention it a little (the original Sonic design is far better after all), but not so much. When a game series you love goes bad however, you're just going to look for new ways to bitch.
Sonic is fast yes, but there are different levels of speed. On the Mega Drive Sonic games you could run all out if you knew the levels well but if you didn't, you were sure to run into an enemy or a pit of spikes. The old Sonic games had variety - there was some brilliant speed sometimes, but a lot of the time it was slower paced platforming. The speed you travel in the new games is borders on ridiculous. The game half plays itself because you run so fast. Spring boards are there to jump for you because the speed is so great you wouldn't get all the jumps naturally.
As for the homing attack, it isn't about adaptation. It is overpowered and too easy to hit enemies. You need no precision. In the early 3D games I saw the point since it is harder to jump on a target in 3D (though Crash Bandicoot did it fine...) but in a 2D environment it has no use.
And I won't stop whining until the game comes out because SEGA have disappointed me so much with Sonic games I expect it to be crap. If it is good, it'll be a great surprise and I'll appreciate it all the better.
Kind of how it was with the Matt Smith Doctor Who.

Hmmm...I see some of u points but one of the biggest complaints from back in the older days was "sonic is about speed and mario is about exploration and platforming so why is sonic so slow?" I guess complaining in the first place is y the game ended up where it is and I say u can still blast thru a level at full speed on sonic unleashed if and only IF u memorized the level well...otherwise you fall into infinity get spiked to death or fall in the water bcuz ur goin to slow. Ppl should stop finding asanine things to bitch about and focus on the gameplay issues. Sonic unleashed would have been a major step in a good direction for the 3d sonic games IF THEY HAD LEFT OUT THE NIGHT LEVELS!!! Instead it ended up a baby step to many...of course even the werehog levels wouldn't have been so bad if sega hadn't made sonic team rush the game out and patch later on down the road...I bought sonic unleashed when it dropped to 14.99 and noticed i had to wait for updates (patches) to dl before I stared playing. When I eventually got around to the "dreaded" night time levels I didn't see any of the major massive issues that every review I read sited...sonic team knew what was wrong but sega pushed the game through early and they were hoping to scramble and get the patches out b4 they got their *sses boiled in reviews and handed back to them...*sigh* if they had just waited until they ironed out the glitches and released a whole game they might have got at least decent reviews...true a massive amount of ppl would have still bitched but at least they could be looked at as closed minded...in anycase it looks to me like this game is takin sonic on th right track...I hear colors was good but I'm not buyin a wii jus to play one game ha ha ha ha ha
