'Smooth start' for Nintendo 3DS as sales hit 3.6m

Platform holder falls short of 4m prediction

The Nintendo 3DS has sold 3.61 million units since its launch last month, Nintendo has confirmed.

Although falling short of the company's initial four million prediction, Nintendo describes this as a "smooth start" for the handheld.

Nintendo sold 303,000 3DS units across Europe and 113,000 units in the UK during the new portable's first two days on sale.

The platform holder also confirmed it's shifted 9.43m 3DS games in the month since launch, which suggests a better attach rate for the portable than some analysts have suggested.

In the last year Nintendo sold 15.08m Wii units and 17.52m DS consoles, it said.

The company this morning posted a 66 per cent drop in net income for the year ending March 31, 2011, while predictably confirming it will show a new home console at E3 in June.

Do we reckon game sold 390,000 "second hand-recently bought from tesco" systems and caused them to fall short of the 4mil, either way great system bought it on launch an still surgically attached, love the AR Cards. now i just want my AR t shirt from nintendo ;)

Not to mention they've basically brought out none of their big guns on release (if I was to get one now I'd only be interested in Street Fighter as a sole 3DS game). Ocarina of Time, Star Fox, Mario Kart (which will probably be the biggest seller) and Kid Icarus should all see them continually shift a lot of units.

I was considering getting one, but I'm a bit put off by the battery life and of course, as I mentioned above, the lack of games I'd be really interested in (although I've never had a DS and would love to play a few games already released on that!)

I won't be getting one until some decent games come out for it and not just remakes of old games which is typical of Nintendo.

I'm shocked at how many people give out about battery life - its as good as the PSP range for goodness sake with more power, dual screens, 3D. . . .iPhones/iPods only last around 50 minutes if playing REAL games - so battery life isn't really problematic.

You wanted power kids, you got it, enjoy the system I highly recommend it and BTW I never liked the DS systems -so that's quite a turnaround for me.

It's been a month and the only games we know about being released is Steel Diver and OoT.

    That is quite poor.

On the plus side and according to Miyamoto, we're good for Mario Kart this year.

This is because in my opinion the 3DS is a dissapointment - not completely useless but poor games + poorly received hardware = poor sales!

Well it didn't include the word rubbish but it did include disappointment :)

Yes Bazz, 3.6 million is awful and I don't know how Nintendo live with themselves after this atrocity.
