PSN down time costing us 'hundreds of thousands' - Capcom

Lost cash could even be in the millions, says publisher's senior vice president

The prolonged PlayStation Network down time following the hacking of the service is costing Capcom "hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue".

That's according to Christian Svensson, senior vice president at the publisher, who was asked on the Capcom Unity blog what he thought of the hackers responsible for the PSN outage.

"I'm frustrated and upset by it for a number of reasons," he wrote. "As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can't do... and likely my personal information is also compromised. Secondly I like to buy things in the PlayStation Store and that I can't do right now.

"On a related note, as an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget," he added. "These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.

"In short, the hackers appear to be trying to 'punish' Sony for some perceived injustice, and they've been effective in that I suppose. But they're also punishing millions of other consumers and businesses which makes it impossible to be sympathetic to their 'cause'."

Sony said today the PSN might not be fully up and running again until May 31, six weeks after it was taken offline.

The platform holder is reportedly considering offering rewards for help in its hunt for the hackers responsible for the PSN security breach last month.

The indie devs are surely more of a concern than a huge company like Capcom?

Now dont shoot me down but iv seen the rumours of sony trying to buy the rights to make resident evil 6 a timed exclusive to the ps3 but after this downtime i wouldn't be suprised if it went the other way and was a 360 timed exclusive just saying

Sony prob have contracts that says X content will be on the PS store for X amount of time and Sony will end up having to pay compensation to every single developer. Its not gonna cost them Millions, its gonna cost Billions.

Just when Sony were finally starting to get on an even keel with Microsoft THIS happens! This really has turned into Sony's worst nightmare.

Didn't Capcom recently post record profits, I am sure they will manage. Like it has been mentioned the indy devs who only distribute digitally will be hurting more.

This isn't actually costing Capcom a single penny. Okay, they're not making money, but they're not actually losing money, are they?

All this means is that once PSN is back up, they'll have a bumper revenue.

Exactly. How can one be sympathetic to Anonymous's cause when they are willing to cause so much collateral damage?

Don't worry Capcom, if you have any decent games available at good prices I'll buy them once PSN is back online.

But if there's just overpriced games like we see on Xbox live then I'll get the cheaper versions down my high street.

Capcom have the funds to ride this out but the small developers & publishers don't :( maybe CVG can do a feature on them or something ?

Im not sure how much they profit off it digitally but they do make the Monster Hunter series (or as i like to call it, the PSPs guardian angel).

If any of their revenue comes from online play through Sonys servers or DLC then thats quite a chunk...

Obligatory 3rd paragraph, *mumble, streetfighter costume, cough, dlc rip off...*

they put that bulls**t drm in their psn games, i hope this costs them a frakking fortune.
couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.

no wait, that's just not right, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit after all.

that should read, couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of arsewipes.

you're sitting there whining while people can't access content they bought and paid for because of your bulls**t drm.
i would say i have no sympathy, but that would be inaccurate, what i have is the polar opposite of sympathy, what's that word?
shadenfrade isn't it, meaning pleasure at the misfortune of others.
    in this case.
    oh hell yeah.
and i'm not ashamed to admit it.

Easy on Capcom! It did say in the article he was asked for his opinion. I could see if he was just issueing some kind of public gripe how you might tell him to shove it. But it's precisely BECAUSE Capcom's ok that he's able to feel your pain first as a consumer and second as a business man. And I'd like to hear more about what we think of these hackers. Who do they think they did this for? GeoHot maybe? A lot of good it's doing him. All those PS# users who wanted to jailbreak their systems? I'm sure they're thrilled with this guy's work. I mean really, Who wins in this scenario?

Based on the date of those events and the similarity in the viciousness of the attack, that really may indicate Anon as innocent against Sony and instead their former comrade may be ringleading a new more aggressive group. I'd suggest that the FBI could spend worse uses of their time than tracking down this "Ryan" figure.

Also, developers of online titles have a right to express their concern here. I just hope they take these events into account when considering the digital download only future.

Thanks, g_marrs for the assist. I'm hearing that the network wont be fully operational till the end of the month, but has anyone heard any kind of ETA for when we'll be able to play again? All I want to do is enjoy my product.

I can't help it, I find this whole PSN fiasco hilarious, I don't hide the fact that the xbox is my preferred console, I do own a PS3 and a gaming PC also, this just tickles me because of the arrogant aproach Sony have taken to this whole gaming generation.

I'm almost sympathetic to those who are missing out on their hobby while PSN is disrupted, but i'm not because PS3 isn't the only game in town is it...

I was thinking exactly the same thing. He's just answering a question on a Capcom forum, it's not a press release.

Sure capcom might whore out DLC a bit, but you don't have to buy it. Although the PSN connection for some of the arcade games is f**king shocking (why didn't they do this on the 360 version), and this just shows why it's a very bad thing.

I still think the one real benefit everyone might have from this PSN debacle is that is slows down the cloud gaming, and always on DRM mechanisms.

PSN down time costing us 'hundreds of thousands' - Capcom This is a good reason why Games/Add-ons and so on should be on discs and not download only,
If they had discs in shops they could still be making money,
If i had my own software company i just couldnt take the risk of downloads for this reason if it goes down your income stops.
