Mass Effect 3 to focus on smaller, more intimate squad

But BioWare promises to 'bring everyone back' at some point

In the latest issue of Xbox World 360 magazine, which features a massive eight-page preview of Mass Effect 3, BioWare reveals a few nuggets of information on how it's treating returning characters.

Project director Casey Hudson starts by saying that having 12 members in a squad was far too big. Instead, Mass Effect 3 will focus "on a smaller squad with deeper relationships and more interesting interplay".

However, that doesn't mean one of your personal favourites won't return, quite the opposite in fact. Hudson went on to say: "We're bringing everyone back - every main character is in Mass Effect 3 somewhere".

Obviously this statement comes with the proviso that they survived the events of the two previous games.

"... If they survived, they'll make it in. Zaeed is in, plus Thane, Mordin and the rest," reads the mag.

Art director Derek Watts also discussed the return of Jack, who has matured since the previous game.

"Maybe she's softened up a bit. You can only stay punk rock for so long, you know. Even Johnny Rotten eventually goes, 'I've got to do something different.' She'd get tired of walking around completely naked and she'd probably grow her hair out, but she's still Jack and still kinda punk - shaved at the sides with a pony tail at the back."

For those worrying that their favourite characters might receive an uncharacteristic makeover, Watts reassuringly points out that "the people who redesign the characters are the same people who did the original".

Senior designer Christina Norman has said Mass Effect 3 will do away with role-playing elements that don't "have a real impact in the battle".
