Game: Metal Gear Solid 5
Likelihood of E3 2011 showing: Who knows?
As much as we love Hideo Kojima, he's not a man of his word - and we're grateful for it. The MGS creator proclaims every new entry in the tactical espionage action series is his swansong, and Metal Gear Solid 4 was no different.
And just the other week, he seemed to suggest that Metal Gear 5 would not be shown at E3 2011.
But if history is anything to go by, we'll soon be hearing about a new entry in the mainline Metal Gear Solid series, even if it is without long-time hero Solid Snake - and the smart money is surely still on the Los Angeles megashow next month.
In his last adventure, the Foxdie virus within Snake accelerated the ageing process and forced him into his bone-clicking, joint-creaking, Tom Selleck moustache-sporting years for one last suicide mission.
After enduring a gruelling ten-odd hours of punishment Solid Snake's story reached its conclusion, but true to form - and just like Kojima himself - the door didn't close on his way out, and as we all know all Kojima needs is a single small thread and we've got a massive blockbuster on our hands again.
MILITAIRES SANS FRONTIERES
Where does Metal Gear Solid go from here? As rampant fans of the series and devout Kojima faithfuls we're still in the dark. Predicting what the Metal Gear creator has in mind for the future of the series is an exercise in madness.
What would we like to see? A new chapter in Big Boss' story would go down a treat. He's only made one brief appearance on the PlayStation 3 and wasn't playable, so playing a game either during his rise to power as leader of FOXHOUND or as a member of The Patriots would be something new for fans to enjoy. On the other hand a fifth Metal Gear title may be the perfect chance for Kojima to create a new generation of stealth soldiers, perhaps with Solid Snake as their mentor.
At the moment Konami's line-up is packed with plenty of Metal Gear related games including a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 for the Nintendo 3DS, a HD version of Peace Walker for PS3 and Metal Gear Solid Rising, a spin-off title starring cyborg-ninja Raiden. As well as these two Kojima showed Metal Gear Solid 4 running on the Sony NGP, sparking rumours of a MGS4 port or even a MGS1 remake that uses its engine.
Rumours of MGS5 have been floating about since TGS last year, when it was reported that Kojima had been mulling over ideas for MGS5 and was open to working on it in the future,. Before that Kojima himself said for his next project he would either make something original or make Metal Gear Solid 5. Seems like a good chance that one of the games he'll be showing will be a new entry in the series.
