Anonymous accused of hacking Eidos, Deus Ex websites

1,000s of users reportedly affected by latest data breach

A splinter group of the infamous hacking collective Anonymous has seemingly claimed another set of victims, stealing the personal information of 1,000s of gamers from the Eidos and Deus Ex websites.

Krebonsecurity reports that both sites temporarily displayed a banner which read "Owned by Chippy1337" before being down for several hours.

Fingers are being pointed towards a new faction of Anonymous rebels as the culprits for the latest attack. 'evo', 'nigg' and 'e' are a few of the handles used in online conversation carried out by the group, which Krebonsecurity managed to obtain.

"A hacker using the alias 'evo' discusses having defaced the sites and downloading some 9,000 resumes from Eidos," reports the site.

"'evo' and other hackers discuss leaking 'src,' which may refer to source code for Deus Ex or other Eidos games.

"In a separate conversation, the hackers also say they have stolen information on at least 80,000 Deus Ex users and that they plan to release the data on file-sharing networks," it added.

An inside observer of the group's actions gave their account of how the hackers operate to Krebonsecurity after asking not to be named for fear of retribution:

"ev0 and nigg got the oday they used to break in [to Eidos.com] from one guy, then got Blackhatcat to execute it and then screwed everyone, stole the database.

"This is how those guys roll: One day they work together, the next they war. They drop dox on each other like it's a game. Just like they did pinning the defacement of Dues Ex on Blackhatcat. Then denied the whole thing.

"It's psychotic behaviour like I have never seen. It's like they hate each other but will work together on certain ops if it suits them, but then might turn on each other in the end...and then laugh it off."

Speculation has been mounting that those responsible last month's PSN hack and its continued down time are rogue Anonymous members, although the main branch of the group denies involvement and has actually been subject to attacks itself.

Wait a second, So this is a splinter group of anonymous. Which don't use the handle anon, haven't linked themselves to the group at all and have openly bragged about thier activities somethings anonymous doesn't do. Are linked. How exactly is this.

I know this is just a games site but don't you have some kind of journalistic responsibility to at least attempt to report the facts and not twist them. Seriously every bulls**t hacking story you guys print makes me think you are just as bad as the guys in the mainstream press you've been hounding with the WRONG campain.

These guys are just a group of tossers. Not Anonymous.

Don't know what their problem is really, they must be very fat and/or have very small willies. They decide to launch war on a platform that feeds their entertainment, then go to war on fellow punters of that industry who are the only people in the world even vaguely likely to be sympathetic towards them.

Cut off those little willies and those typing/wanking fingers.

Basically, the net nerds have all fallen out. As a result, each sides of the cyber-civil war is upping the frequency, severity and profile of their hacks, and pinning it on the other by leaving calling cards with handles/real names. It's one big one-upmanship game to make the other party look bad, with absolutely no thought to the collateral damage to ordinary businesses and consumers.

The only way to stop this becoming a trend amongst hackers is to catch and punish just one hacker and lock them up for years, make an example of them. It will send out a message to the rest of the idiots that it will not be tolerated. Stealing thousands/millions of peoples personal information/bank details is as good as walking into a bank and robbing it and it should be treated the same in the court of law. If they dont currently have the power to put hackers away for serious amounts of time, then a new law should be introduced, and quickly, before it gets out of hand.

i think the best thing to do to deal with this kind of behaviour by hackers, which is anti-social and criminal, is to beat them all up and threaten them with violence.

I just get the feeling that nowhere is safe anymore - call me paranoid if you want but it seems to be getting worse.

funny thing is that i think anonymous are pretty similar to al-qaeda. apart from both spreading terror, in the sense that when people read 'anonymous' or 'al-qaeda' they think of these big, structured, sophisticated international organisations, when actually its smaller rag-tag groups who share a similar viewpoint but arent actually organised together at all. of course thats not as media friendly.

take a step back and look at what you are saying and youll realise my argument is correct. its strange how despite so little evidence every hack now gets blamed on anonymous. also ever thought that maybe cyberthieves who are clever enough to hack sony are clever enough to throw police, authorities etc off their scent by using clever scapegoats?

you people are so f**king dumb its hilarious!

In this country if you are part of a gang that commits violent crimes and you are with the gang when they commit a violent crime then you are considered equally guilty in the eyes of the law.

Anonympus carried out cyber attacks against Sony.

The PSN is down due to a cyber attack.

Anonymous refuse to rule out their own members being responsible for the attack.

Anonymous have a history of similar intrusions.

They are also wanted by law enforcement all over the world.

That anyone can protest their innocence is idiotic in my opinion. Agree with their attacks if you will but unless you carried the attacks on the PSN personally don't write off the guilt of the most guilty looking culprits.

  37. Metagen on 13 May '11 said:

Just because the bulk of anonymous don't have a clue how to pull of these attacks doesn't mean that it doesn't have members hiding within the group that just won't talk. I personally believe that it's a splinter group of members and this attack was only made possible on PSN because of Anonymous. Whether it's the same group or a related group carrying out these attacks remains to be seen however I find it very likely that they are in some way connected.
I blame Anonymous for facillitating these attacks and I think that most of them didn't realise how far these attacks would go and now just want to wash their hands of the whole situation. The damage, however, has already been done and people will remember this the next time they claim to be "working for the greater good". Let's just hope this doesn't keep up because I know a lot of politicians who would like to get a firmer grip on the net.

You are correct, 50 years is too light of a sentence. I think it should be 1 year (non-concurrent) for every infraction, with a possibility of parole after serving 1/2 of the sentence. :D

Sounds about right. The exact same type of behaviour can be witnessed on various online chat client services - ranging from people who have a little bit of knowledge, to people who are well and truly "in the know". It's the kind of personality schism and behaviour that would see them either running a gang or regularly thrown to the curb in the physical world.
