Today brought the news that we've all been waiting for, the PlayStation Network is finally creeping back online and we want your final reaction.
Now that the PSN is alive once more, and you can see the whole picture, what's your verdict on how Sony handled the whole thing from the initial revelation that thousands of users had had personal information stolen right through to rolling out access to PlayStation's online facilities?

Has today been one of overwhelming joy for you PS3 fans now that you're finally able to compete in some healthy online competition, are you over the moon that you finally have access to community content, or were you quite happy playing in peaceful solidarity?
Also, why not tell us what was number one on your To Do list? What game or download did you rush to first when you heard the news (no changing your password isn't a game)?
Most importantly, does the return of the PlayStation Network allow you to put this whole debacle behind you? Obviously there's no reason to give any time to whoever was behind the attack, but can you forgive and forget the Sony security slip, or will you forever be looking over your cyber shoulder?
Oh, and finally, are there any CVG readers out there that are still waiting?

I'll wager 250,000 Republican Credits on that. But it's hardly likely.
The store is still inaccessable however, which is the main point I a looking forward to.

It's weird 'cause I'm still signed in. Have been since 7pm.
Just waiting on my Portal partner so we can finally get started.
The first thing I did was synch my Steam and PSN accounts (just in case). All will be forgiven as long as I can access the store at some point this month. Really want the Castlevania DLC.

I heard the scoop on Sky News... I guess Sony gave it to the media pretty fast.
I thought I would have heard first here though
I wasted my time updating MAG - only to get kicked out within a few minutes to discover it was down again.
Ah well there is always tomorrow

Working fine here. Not been booted, it's been up all evening. I'm guessing is the usual bulls**tters claiming others.

I've been on PSN for about 3 hours today, worked fine no issues. When you click PS Store you get an error message, they'll restore that at a later date, probably 31st with everything else. They've been a bit slow with giving us progress on what they were doing and when it would be back, but it's back now and that's all that matters, plus we get some nice freebies too, for a set period.

I was in my room not giving two belgium waffles about it. Not because I hate the ps3, but because I have my law finals starting tomorrow and I left my ps3 at home (50 miles away). Love my life!

i got the update, changed my password, but when i try to get into Account Settings i just get 'Error code 80710D36'
also you cannot remove your address either, it just keeps saying you have to enter a valid address

PSN back up then down then up again...
First operation... Change password.
Second operation... Check name, address and billing details.
Third operation... Check privacy policy and related info.
Interestingly, it is not possible to view nor change your date of birth entry even though Sony does keep this as means to reset your password via e-mail. Also of annoyance is the ongoing inability to change your PSN I.D. You would think that with so much data being stolen, some way to re-anonymise yourself on PSN and in games would be an important feature. Also of interest is that the billing details on the account maintenance page includes the credit card security code - a value that Sony said it did not collect nor hold...
Sony captures your IP address, any music, games or movies you play, any web sites you browse, voice and video chat sample data, etc... Is this the kind of information you want Sony, its partners and any successful hackers to hold about YOU?

First, I just happened to come onto the site this morning and saw your headline that psn was been rolled out with just the online section up and running. Second, I finally managed to get onto my ps3 around 8 this evening and downloaded and installed 3.61 in mins ( love my new 100mb connection ), but I couldn't sign in to change my password for 20 mins. I went and watched a blu-ray and tried again at 9 and been on ever since without problems. Just glad to have option to play online again if multiple friends are going nuts on cod or fifa or whatever again. Sony can take their time with the rest to make sure the whole lot is secure. Only thing I would ask, and this is not meant as a complaint ( I have been advocating patience on other posts like others ), is why do this on a Sunday, why not at start of weekend around 5ish on a Friday evening when people are off? Gives people who had a lazy weekend in mind chance to get more than a few hours in if they so choose? I know obvious answer but still have to ask.

It was great not playing a single player again last night but BLOPS was laggier than normal on and off. Got a little worried when it went down temporarily again though but as mentioned previously it is back. At least during the downtime I got to finish some games which were God of War 3, BFBC2 campaign, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Killzone 3 and Crysis 2. My personal opinions about how Sony handled this are mixed. I feel they could not avoid taking PSN down and it was the right thing to do but their communications to the consumers were rubbish and infrequent (so to the developers as by the sounds of it). I did not want an extensive break down of what they were doing and how they were doing it but keeping us in the loop would have been nice. I am looking forward to what my choice of games are when the store is back up and all is forgiven as it turns out I deleted my card information about a month before it got hacked so I could be safe. I think I will use network cards though from now on. All in all it is good to be back!
Sammy_bham on 16 May '11 said:
cant see these free games anywhere yet??
LOL as if im bothered, probably got them anyway

To answer the article's original question, my thoughts are:
Sony handled the whole affair extremely poorly in the early stages. Their silence did little to reassure worried customers, and they rightly took a bit of a PR bashing.
As the situation has progressed however, they did a lot better by ways of apologies and explanations. I was satisfied with the level of progress updates in the last week or so - it's difficult to be commital about when services would be restored to something so complex, and you can only imagine if they'd pledged to hit specific dates, only to miss them. The backlash would've been ugly.
I think the Welcome Back Package sounds very reasonable, and arguably is more than they needed to do. For me at least, it's a sufficient apology. That doesn't mean my trust isn't dented, and I will be more cautious about how I handle transactions through the PSN in the future. All that said, I for one am happy to put the whole affair behind me and just get to gaming.

Have they sorted out the whole putting online codes thing in yet as i went to get a game of MK last night with a mate but as he still hadn't put in his code but he couldn't sign in with the free 24 hrs either. So we tried to get a game of Motorstorm and Socom but it kept saying servers unavailable, in fact Motorstorm's find game options were completely blacked out..
Good to see the system back up and running though and obviously there will be a few teething troubles but the first thing they need to sort out is the online code activation. No point giving us the online back when so many new games have these codes.

I read it on VG 24/7 on Saturday night.
Looking forward to getting back into the store, which I cant yet.
I dont think they could have done much more IMO. if anyone thinks this is due to slack security then wait and see when other established names fall, not gaming machines either. As the world Tech advances, so do the crimials.

I don't use psn so much so I haven't missed a thing. I mostly take down backgrounds and look if there are any programs of value to download but never buy anything. There are only americans that are like babies and nag about it. no one in scandinavia cares. Everyone expected an attack. there WILL be more attacks to every thing that are attached to internet. you can't get away with that. there will always be hackers. so it was good they did it to sony now instead of later when there could have been much more info stolen.
