3DS, Wii record heavy sales drop in April

Contrasting fortunes for Nintendo and its rivals in the US

3DS and Wii sales took a big hit in the US in April, according to data from research firm the NPD Group.

While monthly Xbox 360 and PS3 sales were up compared to April 2010, Wii sales came in at 172,000 units, down 38 percent year-over-year, Marketwatch reports.

And while 3DS shifted just shy of 400,000 units in its first week in the US, it managed only 194,000 sales in April.

Nintendo has acknowledged that 3DS hasn't raced out of the gates quite as it expected, while the Wii slowdown is more understandable given the system's time on the market, its former sales dominance, and the recent announcement of a successor, which is slated for release next year.
