Atari is to sell Champions Online developer Cryptic Studios, the publisher announced today.
Speaking in an earnings report, the firm deemed Cryptic a "discontinued operation" as of March 31, but said support on all Cryptic products will continue as the publisher sells the San Francisco-based studio.
Development on the studio's new Neverwinter project is also said to continue as planned for now.
"In line with the previously stated strategy of fewer but more profitable releases and further expansion into casual online and mobile games, the Company has determined that external development creates more flexibility in the changing marketplace," said Atari of its decision.
Cryptic officially made its recent MMO game, Champions Online, a free-for-all offering back in January, with real money changing hands for Adventure Packs, items, powers and costume pieces that can be bought inside Cryptic's C-Store.
