Dead Island: Dissected

Trailer Analysis: 34 screenshots from the first footage...

We've all seen that emotive initial Dead Island trailer and the bulk of screenshots that were drip-fed to us three at a time, but the latest video is the first time we've seen any moving footage of what the game engine itself has to offer.

As you can see from the opening shot the game is set on the fictional island of Banoi. Considering this is an FPS game, it looks like Dead Island is going to offer us a refreshing change of location compared to the greys and browns we're used to in the genre.

Not only is it all blue skies and golden sand but the sun is flooding the screen with light, which creates a really washed out effect for much of the game.

We then get a tour around the open-world with what looks like in-game footage and therefore a good idea of the kind of environments Dead Island will contain and the quality of the presentation in general.

Although dusty heat seems to be the theme throughout Banoi, it looks like we'll be playing in a healthy variety of settings. The beach is an obvious one and it looks like there will be a few structures providing cover like huts and ...erm... surfboards sticking out of the sand, but compared to your usual FPS this is looking like a much more open affair.

It looks like we'll also be able to venture right up into the mountains for a bit of shrubbery and spectacle. Nice waterfall.

There will be denser areas by the looks of it too with places like this run-down town area providing a more familiar scene, with alley ways and side-streets. We bet players will have access to at least a few of those buildings for some sniper work, maybe, or just a hiding place from the horde.

Speaking of the horde, well, there doesn't seem to be one as such. The walking dead seem to be pretty scattered in this trailer, which makes for another change of pace. In fact, the highest head count we can muster from the trailer is in this scene with a grand total of five zombies, and one of them is on his back.

We also get a close up of some of the in-game zombies and the standard of animation on offer. We were never expecting anything as good as that original CG trailer and the undead in this trailer look like they'll do the job.

Notice how the brain-bunch is still in possession of their touristy accessories? Have you ever seen a zombie with an MP3 player? You have now.

We'll be getting more than the standard brain-dead stagger brigade as well. This couple look to be launching an attack while on fire - always an extra hassle - and there's a half-chewed woman getting her sprint on in the trailer as well.

Like the first trailer (abeit on a much lower level) this latest Dead Island trailer appears to be making a play for the heart strings as well. The music is that same melancholy piano and there are nostalgic snap shots of happy holiday-makers scattered throughout to remind you of the way things were before it all started going arms out.

Finally, while this is a long shot, there's one particular scene that we think gives us some insight into the cause of the zombie outbreak. Kind of.

Graffiti on a wall outside a church reads "God! Forgive Us!" It's an odd thing to spray, granted, but we think it must have been put there by someone responsible for the zombification for anyone who were to visit the island following the crisis to try and understand what happened.

It's unlikely to have been put there during the epidemic - there's barely time to scribble a gang sign when you're being chased by zombies, nevermind a plea for redemption - and we can't think it was usual discourse for the regular congregation to be painting prayers on church property before the outbreak. Make of it what you will.
