Codemasters has told us it's not technically feasible to disable the Dirt 3 VIP Pass required to access the game's online features.
Owners of the PS3 version are currently unable to play the rally title's multiplayer modes because the unlock pass that ships with new retail copies has to be redeemed through the PlayStation Store, which has been out of action since last month.
The PS3 version of Mortal Kombat encountered similar problems, but publisher Warner came up with a workaround. It has waived the need to use the game's online pass until the PlayStation Store is available again, but Codies says this won't be possible with Dirt 3.
"We've looked into doing something similar for Dirt 3 but it's technically not possible, as it's hard-coded into the game," a spokesperson said.
"Changing this would require considerable development time and a patch which would need to go through Sony's submission process. This in itself would be a longer process than waiting for Sony to bring the PSN Store back online."
Sony said yesterday that it's aiming to have the PlayStation Store "live by the end of May".
