Nintendo 3DS drops to lowest price yet: £160

Carphone Warehouse goes price tag bonkers

The Nintendo 3DS has been spotted at its lowest price yet in the papery jungle of newspaper advertising.

The Carphone Warehouse is offering the eyeball tickling handheld for no more than £160 straight up. That's a reduction from £229.99 and an overall saving of £69.99.

Last week US retailer GameStop said that Nintendo 3DS sales were lagging behind expectations, which could explain the price drop at The Carphone Warehouse if the company is experiencing the same lack of interest.

It could just be a moment of generosity from the high-street chain, of course, but even Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata admitted in April that the 3DS wasn't selling as expected, blaming public confusion as the problem.

I'm trying to sell mine for £180 with Pilotwings Resort, so far I've been asked if I'll take £130 for it..... errr... no!

Why are you selling a console so soon after launch?

Bit silly selling so quick.. We all knew there wouldnt be many games out for it before summer proper. I haven't played mine, but that's fine by me, as I knew the deal when I bout it on release.
Although I wish I'd waited now the price has gone down.

I held off buying for the simple reason that i have not been able to try the thing! demo models in stores would probably push sales up but having only seen 2D footage on tv ads i'm not sold yet..

He's selling it because he thinks it's rubbish!

Aside from the headache it gave me when I demoed one I was very impressed. But there aren't enough games for me to buy one right now. Even OoT won't be enough on its own- I've played it more times than I can remember in the past.

I think a major issue is that most casuals don't realise it's actually a vastly more powerful machine than the old DS. The ads never mention that, only that it's in 3D, or that you can get Nintendogs+Cats

How until these are around the £100 mark do you reckon? I'm selfishly hoping it will continue to struggle driving it down to around £120 then I'll probably pick one up. Personally I thought the 3DS would be selling like hot cakes but I guess there are a lot of people like myself around who are waiting for the price to hit a sweet spot.

Disappointment generally, yes the tech is impressive but Nintendo seem to be churning out half-a**ed efforts by their own standards. Pilotwings, Zelda and Starfox all had me excited at the prospect of what new features Nintendo could bring to the table but apart from new textures and a 3D mode it seems the answer is very little. Nintendo offered a better N64 remake over six years ago with Super Mario 64 3DS - all it lacked was an analog stick.

That only leaves me with Super Mario 3DS to really get excited about, as I'm wary of how much effort will be going into the new 3DS Mario Kart going on present form. And Resident Evil Revelations is the only third party game I'm interested in. I know E3 is soon and guess I should wait another 12 days to see what else is on the table.

The delay in the firmware update hasn't helped and again there is little that appeals coming to the virtual shop.

I agree with your points entirely. I would wait until after E3 though as you've bought one and launch consoles generally (these days) tend to be very dry anyway.

There are some cracking looking 3rd party games and one in particular...

This games has me attention very very much so and to me, is a glimpse of what the 3DS could play host to with other developers.

In about 9 months time this system is going to be amazing, all Nintendo handhelds start slow......

ALL OF THEM, trust me...... The DS launched with 2 games worth having and crap like SPRUNG the dating game and it stayed thay way for nearly 6 months, only until Mario Kart and Animal Crossing etc arrived the DS looked like a total failure, if you have old issues of mags like GAMES TM or NINTENDO OFFICIAL etc go back and read up about what a terrible start that world dominating console had.

I learned this about Nintendo ages ago and so now i wait a calender year before buying one of their consoles, they put so much work into the design of hardware and control interface and are traditionally very hard to deal with if your a thrid party developer so you have to give the software side of things time to catch up.

Fast forward to March next year and this machine will boast a new Mario 3d game, zelda, a new Mario Kart, Starfox, Paper mario and the new Resident evil revelations title and thats just off the top of my head.

Right now almost every 3Ds story is followed by negative after negative comments from the kind of people that either dont like Nintendo, don't buy Nintendo or have a very bad memory and who will have to eat their words when they finally give in.

Hardware is driven by software, thats just simple plain fact and software takes time to develop, if you don't realise this you should not purchase new consoles on day 1, it's harsh but thats just the fact of the matter.

I love Nintendo even though they seem to have forgotten about us older lot and embraced the casual market a little bit too much but hey thats the way the gaming world is now, i also didnt buy the 3DS day one because like i said i know Nintendo, i Know they will have a newer model by next xmas 2012, i know it will have an RRP of 149.99 by next april 2012 and i know it will have the games i want by that time.

It kills me to not have the new toy now but experience has taught me to be patient and that i will enjoy it so much more when it fits my criteria. If you have a console just be a bit more patient, great things are coming.

I'd at least give it until the update and eshop come online. The 3DS does desperately need more games though. The existing catalogue of DS games just doesn't seem to be enough.

I kind of feel like I own the brand new Neo Geo Color Pocket.

Just bought a brand new one from Gamestation for £148.99 (Cosmos Black) two days ago.
The blue one was still around £200 though.
Either way, i thought it was a bargain!

Thanks for the info boskersrevenge, it does look like a promising title.

Megatrons_Fury you make some good points but I brought my original DS on day one and don't remember feeling this disappionted. Maybe as I have got older I expect more, but your argument only strengthens that I should try and sell mine now whilst I can still get around £180 back and maybe re-invest next year if I like what is on offer then.

As I have said else where - Pilotwings Resort was good but ultimately a disappointment for me being a huge fan of the series, (no parachuting, no online leaderboards/multiplayer and only one island which was ported from a Wii game I had explored to death = criminal) then they announce there will be no online at-all in Starfox 3DS (not even leader boards, co-op online is a big opportunity missed IMO) and now we are supposed to be amazed by some hint guides and a touchscreen inventory/maps in Zelda OoT 3DS.

They managed a much better remake over six years ago with Super Mario 64 DS which offered better character models, 3 new playable characters, new abilities, multiplayer mode and new touchscreen minigames. All these extras made it a worthy replay and offered a fresh experience without changing the core game too much, some new textures and the option of playing in 3D are not enough to justify a full retail price tag to play it on a tiny screen - I may as well just play the originals on my Wii.

My local GAME is selling it for £148.99, was very impressed, black only though, but I always thought that was the better one!

There are a few very important and very true points being made here. But yeah, the DS was REALLY slow to start off with, and as many people have pointed out, the 3DS is still outselling the original DS by a f**k ton.

The only reason the 3DS hasnt kept your attention as easily is because 3D and better networking features aren't as engaging a new concept as say...Dual Screens, Mic, Touch Screen and proper 3D models for the first time on handhelds... i finished wario ware touched and mario 64 ds in a week and ended up buying some rubbish games to pass the time, plus i was younger and more easily pleased.

I think Mario Kart is going to be a very nice step in the right direction from what the guy in charge was saying.

Again, wait until E3, and buy DEAD OR ALIVE! It's a good game.

I seriously doubt anyone is gonna buy it for £180 off you, too many places are doing that 149£ for a cosmo black deal.

Megatron is correct. Remember the GBA when it started? Loads of crap to okay games for about a year before the likes of Mario Kart came along.

MasterParis I am glad you feel important points are being made. I agree there isn't as huge a difference between this and the DSi as there was with the original DS compared to it's predecessor the GBA SP.

Tbh anybody who wants one, has the money but is still waiting until "X game comes out" is fairly stupid.

Because once X game does come out, gains its critical acclaim and sells like hotcakes. We won't be seeing 3DS pricecs like these until an official price drop in a 2 years or so.

yip, Game and Granger Games were both selling black models in the Gateshead Metrocentre for £147 last week. Blue ones were still over £200. Go figure!
