Modern Warfare 3 subscription service confirmed, detailed

Call of Duty Elite to feature "paid aspects"

Activision's confirmed its much rumoured Call of Duty subscription service, Call of Duty Elite, which is set to launch this autumn alongside Modern Warfare 3.

The service, which will be compatible with all future Call of Duty games, is said to be free to all CoD players except for "some paid aspects TBD".

Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, reports the Wall Street Journal, and will provide extra content including downloadable map packs as part of the subscription.

The portions of the service that will be free include features inspired by Facebook where players can meet up and share insults, and a Halo Waypoint-style performance tracker which lists all your statistics for every gun in the game.

Another feature of the service will give "Call of Duty" players tools, modeled on those from stock-trading websites, to analyze their performance within the game, gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies.

Activision execs have supposedly said they haven't yet figured out how much to charge for the service, but they expect the cost to be less than fees for comparable online-entertainment services, such as a $7.99-a-month Netflix movie subscription.

More details are expected after a press embargo lifts later today.
