E3 2011: Xbox E3 press conference - LIVE

Live reporting starts at 5pm BST

See all of CVG's E3 2011 coverage

Here we go. The first biggie of this year's E3 expo, Microsoft's Xbox press conference, kicks off this afternoon at 17:30pm BST.

The whole spectacle is set to be streamed live on Xbox.com, but the good news this year is all three platform holder press conferences, bar any last minute technical hitches will also be streamed live on CVG.

Thanks to a load of MS domain name registrations we know we should probably expect the first showing of Kinect Sports and Dance Central sequels, as well as a new Fable game dubbed 'The Journey'.

Xbox 360 Screenshot
On top of that, long-rumoured projects such as Epic's Gears of War Kinect spin-off and Microsoft's Halo 1 HD remake should finally reveal their hand.

With Nintendo set to premier brand new hardware tomorrow too, we wouldn't completely rule out Microsoft confirming plans to develop a new home console either - but don't expect anything more than a hint at the Xbox's future.

Check back at 5pm BST (9am PDT) for the CVG live stream and text commentary. We're a bit scared already.

Right folks, this is it, our first platform holder conference of E3 2011.

Predictably MS went with the green theme. The very green theme.

Well, we've reached the billed start time but there's still plenty of people to take their seats.

Of course, if you've been paying attention today, you'll already have a fair idea about what we can expect from MS.

So ladies and gents, how can we pass the time?

Who thinks we might see GTA V during the Microsoft presentation?

It's starting to fill up now. Not long to go perhaps.

"I think GTA V will be announced at Nintys conference, For project cafe as lead platform," says Capn JaMMiE. That would certainly cement the Ninty conference in the memory. Anyone else got any thoughts?

Here we go!

Microsoft kicks off with Modern Warfare 3.

And the first gaff of the night is a disconnecting controller! At least MS can say this isn't staged.

First-person scuba-diving. Looking good.

It's essentially underwater stealth. Really slow, calm, really nice.

Here comes some classic COD action now.

Ouch, boot to the face against a submarine door. The edge as well. That's not the way to go.

Is it geeky to say that's nice duct-tape on that charge? 'Cause it is.

What do you think folks? This or Battlefield 3? Too early to say I know, but initial thoughts?

Driving a dingy straight into a plane. That's how you do it.

Sledgehammer's Glenn Schofield takes the mic.

A few words of thanks, 'very excited'. Now here's Don Matrick from Microsoft.

What did everyone think about MW3? It's a thumbs up from us. Three of 'em. Your thoughts?

Xbox 360 Screenshot
Tomb Raider time. Really excited about this one.

The demo's running on 360. It already looks 100 times more mature than anything we've seen from the series so far.

Lara hanging upside down. "I can't die like this".

Screams of pain as she hits the floor. Wow. Shivers. This is definitely a more vulnerable Lara.

Hmm a Heavy Rain style QT combat section. Interesting.

Lara's survival instincts highlight objects in the world to help her escape.

Well, this couldn't be much more different to what we've seen from the series to date could it? What are people thinking?

More QT mechanics.

Looking forward to that one next year.

Ah Peter Moore. Who read our Microsoft greats and Microsoft gaffs earlier? This chap features a lot. We're fans.

"Tomb Raider looks weird..." says Moorpheus

Ha! A little nod to the South Park slating from Moore. Good man.

Here's Dr. Ray from BioWare. It's Mass Effect 3 of course.

Mass Effect 3 Kinect voice recognition - Here comes a live demo!

Kinect used to trigger conversation options.

It's like you start the sentence for Shep and he finishes it....Point?

Seems easier to press a button if you ask us.

Here's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Ouch, point blank headshot from behind!

Yves Guillemot on stage to show us Kinect integration with Ghost Recon.

Ubisoft dev Chris is controlling gun customisation Minority Report style.

Gesture and voice. Looks really smooth.

Audience applauds. There's no 'Applause' sign here either. E3 2011 is impressed.

We're just as impressed with the thousands of gun types it looks like you can create.

Chris is using hand gestures to fire the gun. We're still pad lovers as far as that's concerned but a lot of people here seem to like the idea.

All Tom Clancy games in the future will have Kinect functionality.

We're on Xbox Live now with non-gaming entertainment.

Ten times more entertainment partnerships with Live. Youtube coming. More applause.

Bing coming to Xbox "You say it, Xbox finds it."

Note to self, Americans say "Lay-go" not Lego.

Live TV comes to Xbox 360 this year.

New Xbox Experience coming this Fall. We'll see whether that applies globally.

UFC president Dana White at Microsoft's E3 conference!

"All the best fights... only on Xbox."

Live UFC events coming to Xbox Live. That should please any Xbots who don't want to shell out for ESPN.

MS is really pushing the non-gaming content.

Looks like you can bet against friends on who's going to win fights.

Phil Spencer says the MS core is still about games.

Gears time! Here we go.

Cliffy B in the hizzie.

Looks like some co-op's about to go down. With Ice T no less.

Massive beast with tentacles is the hassle in this section.

Silverbacks are the weapon of choice. They're stubby little mechs. Look pretty cool.

"Go for the eyes" A tip for life.

Oooo it's a bit loud isn't it?

That things got a pretty wide mouth.

Ice T doesn't seem at all phased. We'd be flinching every second with that big screen blowing up behind us.

Now a song?

Oh, no, a song in game we guess.

Good, we don't have time for songs.

Crytek and some olde language. Must be Codename Kingdoms.

Ryse is the name? It looked like a strong Kinect game, still we'll have to see how it works in practice.

Halo: CE "remade and remastered"

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary! Didn't see that one coming!

Oh wait, yes we did.

Here's Forza 4. Feels like we've been waiting ages for this. Still, we're nowhere near GT5 territory.

In game footage for your eyes. Looks really, really good.

Here's Molyneux for Fable The Journey.

He wants to make us feel even more involved with Albion.

Trailer starts similarly to the Fable III chicken run, except with a bug that's quickly squashed.

Kinect horse riding and spell casting. Will Kinect be used for farting and burping? Here's hoping.

Looks like Kinect will be forever on rails, not that we expected more from it. Still at least Fable The Journey didn't suffer the same lag as a certain Harry Potter game.

Minecraft making console debut on Kinect and 360 in the winter.

Disneyland Adventures now. Time to relive the old childhood.

I never did see Mickey. If he turns out to be omitted from the game I'll be crushed all over again.

More Kinect acting. Reminds me of Kinect Adventures last year.

"Oh no Captain Hook!" in unison.

It's as if MS is saying "Why not have fun like this?" or "Don't forget to say things like this!"

Fist bump. Oh dear.

Kinect Star Wars. Actually interested to see how this one works. Not getting my hopes up too high though.

Lots of classic Star Wars scene in a montage trailer. Jedi front kick features.

Going to need some sort of gameplay demo for actual excitement though.

Speaking of which...

Hmmm. "Light Saber on" don't remember that in the films.

That Force push looked weak.

These enemies don't seem to pose much of a threat.

Jumping and Force slide are controlled by the player at least.

Seasame Street. Another childhood favourite. Can't help but feel I'll have outgrown it now.

Ah here comes more natural, natural fun from Daddy and his actor son.

Dad doesn't seem to want to say much. Actually makes for a nice change in these Kinect demo bits.

Schafer puts a Fall date on Seasame Street.

Here's Kudo - Bam! There he is!

Kinect Fun Labs announced. Another leak from earlier today.

We'll always respect a man who wears Aviators in-doors....

So let's see what this Fun Labs is all about. Kinect creates an Avatar based on what you actually look like. Who remembers the 3DS?

Finger drawing allows you to draw in 3D. That's pretty cool. The MS man draws 3D lines around two images of himself. In front, behind, around.

Kudo says Kinect can do anything and includes "pulling a trigger on a gun" Except, with Kinect, there's not pulling is there. It's more...showing the camera your palm.

Digital version of a cushion created in-game by scanning it into Kinect. That's impressive. We saw something similar in early Milo.

Maybe the Molyneux creation has been scrapped for bits.

Wow, it's out now.

Kinect Sports Season 2 announced - 6 new sports and in-game voice/gestures.

Gestures in golf for the swing (obviously) and voice is used to select clubs. A bit like Ghost Recon but more badass. No wait, less.

Kinect Sports Season 2 football. American of course.

I'm going to try and.... Oh my god he's actually shouting at it.

Definitely wouldn't do this at home. Neighbours would burst in to try and save my life.

Kasson Crooker hits the stage and opens with some self-mockery. We'll always respect that.

He's here for Dance Central 2 of course.

Two-player dancing at long last.

Don Mattrick hits the stage again.

Sounds like a sum up. This looks like it could be it from Microsoft.

....

Nah course not!

The dawn of a new trilogy. No prizes...

Boom! Halo.

Halo 4 for Holiday 2012.

There you go folks. Thanks for watching with me. Hope the live stream worked out for you. Seemed to be going ok.

So, more for Kinect, it's starting to look every so slightly more geared towards the hardcore but there is of course more for the family too.

Dance Central goes true multiplayer, Codename Kingdoms turns out to be Ryse.

Gears looked about as epic as you can expect.

Halo: CE remastered and Halo 4 was a fitting end. Should definitely get the juices flowing.

What did you think? Talk amongst yourselves. See you at the next stop.

This all sounds terminally yawnsome for actual gamers. Didn't we all get excited last year that they might announce some core Kinect titles? Or a new Xbox? And then the MS presentation was a monumental snoozefest.

Sony promises to be a little more exciting this year, but unless MS has something really special up its sleeve my E3 excitement will be exclusively reserved for Bioware, Bethesda and Rockstars output.

I'm sure MS will have a good show, I'm sure they'll be wanting to make up for last years disaster.

Gazing into the Sword of Omens with my "sight beyond sight" I see... Some new causal franchise fwapping, some avatar/dashboard spit and polish, some new entertainment services for Gold subscribers available in US/Can only and a self congratulatory "55 million units FTW" on stage circle jerk from the Microsoft board of directors. Maybe they'll squeeze a game in there if they have time.

Please prove the Sword of Omens wrong Microsoft.

As an Xbox owner who doesn't like Halo, I really don't see what Microsoft are going to announce to get me excited. All I'm interested in is Nintendo's console unveiling since Sony will spend half of their conference apologising and enthusing about security *yawn*. Oh, the pricing of the Vita should be a laugh though...

News of Halo 4 has me interested, but not enough to blindly believe that Microsofts conference will be amazing. They'll probably do what they did last year; 30 mins of hardcore jizzfestery then an hour or two of embaressing Kinect horses**t.

    Interesting.
Im not sure if you are being sarcastic, but you could be right. Ive completely overlooked nintendo, as Ive not been happy with them since the fist year of Wii, but I think Nintendo need to claw bag the 'core' gamer for their next console, because I dont think casuals are interested in upgrading every 5 years.

GTA would be a BIG game to attract the 'core'.

Its not totally unrealistic, dont forget they tried it with GTA:CTW on DS

Yeah it was dissapointing. Pretty much just a showing of 'look how much connect support "improves" the game.' Still can't get over the piece of tripe that was the new and "improved" Fable. It was cool seeing Mass Effect 3 though, and the re-imagined Tomb Raider is looking pretty nice.

Actually, from here out, i'll just write my knee jerk reactions and comments and wait 'til the end before I post the lot. I know how important my opinion is to the industry as well as you lot :P

    * MW3 - Looks great but a bit too Michael Bay looking. Interested to see Battlefield 3 response (will prolly get both anyway)
    * Tomb Raider reboot - Looks pretty decent. Bit more uncharted looking (as expected).
    * ME3 - I'm not interested in at all.
    * Ghost Recon FS - Looked fabulous until the idiot on the Kinect target practice.
    * Xbox entertainment - Practically nothing announced. Xbox bing is meh to me. But UFC on Live looks terrific - this is how live sport should be handled. Integrated paddy power would be dangerous but sweet :)
    * Gear 3 - Uninterested. Didn't like the others anyway. Looks same old IMO. Got on the pre-beta beta and bored very quickly.
    * Ryse - looked okay. Doubt it will actually play like that though.
    * Halo remake - Looks quite nice. Would have preferred a HD double pack with Halo 2. Digital will be sufficient or else budget boxed release.
    * Forza 4 - Head tracking (combined with a controller) looks good but not essential. Graphics not exactly eye popping.
    * Fable The Journey - ZZZzzzzz.
    * Minecraft on 360 - *Shrug*
    * Kinect in general - See! Apart from Forza, it cannot do anything outside light gun shooter types, dancing games or golf.
    * Kinect disneyland - Well, this is kids stuff so I wont bother commenting. I would really like to kick the two kids playing. "Oh no, Captain hook!" :x

    Dunno what I missed but.....

    * Star wars Kinect - More on rails Kinect stuff. Looks terrible and laggy.
    * Tim Schafer - I'm listening..... Sesame Street! :(
    * Kinect fun labs - FFS, this looks s**tE!
    * Kinect Sports 2 - For god sake, MS. Just give it up with Kinect. I though this was to be a showcase for "core" games on Kinect. Like I called it many moons ago, the Kinect CANT DO "traditional, core" games. As for Golf, wii & PS3 move are better golf simulators due to their natural shape. Now for football... Oh, not real football. Anyway, looks woeful. And those "players" are the biggest t**ts i've ever seen.
    * Harmonix, dance central 2 - Imports tunes from DC1. That's nice of them. As for the game, looks pretty much the same. Decent party game.
    * Halo 4 - Not a big surprise, really.

Is that it? Disappointing to say the least and, with Nintendo certain to show new hardware tomorrow, this has been terrible for Microsoft. I expected at least a new console announcement. Pretty much the show I predicted and hoped i'd be wrong about.

    3/10

Not very many suprises there- Gears 3, Mass Effect 3, Forza 4 et al look phenomenal- but now I'm mostly pumped for Halo Anniversary and Halo 4. The new Tomb Raider was looking fantastic too. There were a few cool little things with Kinect- like the intergration in Ghost Recon and Mass Effect and some of the other bits and bobs in that fun lab looked ...well... fun...

But I was a bit gutted with Star Wars and Fable. They look like slow, FPHW's. That's a new genre- first person hand wavers.

And that Disneyland Adventures thing was just horrific. I was eating my dinner at the time and now it's all over my lap. All in all it was a 'good' showing. Not great. Still, as a massive Halo fan, Halo 4 has shot up to number 1 on my most wanted list. Yay! The Chief's back!!

far too much kinect. the kids in the disney thing made me want to smoke myself tbh. seriously.

to sum up; i thought very little of the middle of the show, it was a bit s**te.

the beginning was good though, mw3 looked great tbf.

forza looked rather bleedin good i must say.

    gears looked f**king awesome.

me3 didn't impress that much but i'm hoping for more at the ea briefing,

halo remake? it was no secret, we've all known for a while, but it still looks very good and the silent cartographer with a face lift and online co op is too big a draw for me to walk on by.

oh and halo 4? what the bleeding hell is unicron doing in halo? looked excellent all the same and i'll be having some of that.

I was actually impressed by their conference!

Some really good looking 'core' Games, some really Fun looking 'casual' Games and some really interesting applications.

People have to remember that Gaming has moved on since I first played Games as a kid, it really has branched out into home and looks like there are Games that parents can play with their kids, starting a whole new generation of Gamers!

Well done MS, now its over to Sony and Nintendo, reckon this could be a great E3 for Everyone :D

Aside from Halo and Gears(minus Ice T), this conference was FAIL

    NOW SOMEONE FISTBUMP ME

EDIT; Oh yeah Tomb Raider was pretty darn snazzy as well

Even if Sony had a 5 hour loop of Kaz Hirai constantly apologising it still would beat that 2 hours of wastage. Again Halo a small glimmer of hope.

Or if Nintendo brought on a giant sized Mario with a 3DS in it's hands... for 2 hours.

I honeslty thought Microsoft would announce some new Core games (Halo 4 was pretty much obvoius).

Pretty terrible... No decent surprises (not a Halo fan, sorry), we knew about Gears, ME3 and Tomb Raider before.
What a total giant crab of a conference.

You're a good boy, but you must buy ps3 to stop this optimism towards microsoft.
I can lend you money if you need.

Yep Microsoft surpasses themselves yet again ... what a pile of s**t!

Seriously worried about the future of Microsoft regarding the 360, I think they have lost the plot ..

Only a few things pepped my interest that we didnt already know:

Minecraft - yep could be nice

    &

    Kinect Fun Labs ...

    And thats about it...

No massive surprises, no great exclusives that we didnt know already .... p**s poor , come on M$ pull your finger out, your starting to lag behind here

  86. nuggit3000 on 6 Jun '11 said:

    Same s**t as every year.
Open with CoD... So what, its a multiplat game. MS just like bragging theyve spent money getting timed exclsive DLC.
More trailers of good games that use Kinect, but no real evidence that it works, or how its going to work, and for what parts of the games.
    More party/kids Kinect games
    More On rails Kinect games.
Sequels to the s**t Kinect games already out.

And worst of all... that god damn acting out 'live' kinect games.

I'm with Stonecold here really. The MS side was bs as ever, but some of the stuff that came out of it was pretty interesting. Great game reveals and some interesting new ideas.

Disappointed they never showed the Kinect games revealed at TGS and that Star Wars demo didn't go well IMO. A solid show, ME3's Kinect controls and Halo 4 were definitely the highlights for me and I can't wait to play Sesame Street with my daughter! :D

I could do with some of those happy pills after seeing the american football and the kinect disney game bits.

The start was great but then it just went completely off the boil for me. And Ice-T, stop wearing shades inside you look silly.

  91. Fr33Kye on 6 Jun '11 said:

No impressive or surprising applications for kinect from what i've seen. Lots of rails, which isn't bad but can only be so good. Voice control is very unimpressive since its been around for too long, i wonder if mass effect will have voice control for ps3. Anything gesture based that asks you to do something that could be done easier and much faster with a controller is just boring. Mass effect's team control doesn't sound bad but i predict the combat's lack of difficulty will make the voice control largely unnecessary and cumbersome. I still have to look into ghost recon and kinect labs though. Surprising amount of kinect announcements, not high quality, but high quantity.

  92. jim2wheels on 6 Jun '11 said:

I never post on xbox articles as I'm a ps3 owner only. But...

They are definitely concentrating more on Kinect more than ever, justified to some extent by the install base of Kinect. I cannot believe this is all they have, they must surely have a new console up their sleeve to be announced sometime this year. MS are not stupid, they didn't get where they are today with such slim pickings for the serious gamer.

New xbox is definitely coming, mark my words.

  93. julioaragon on 6 Jun '11 said:

ah and so comes the negative comments from uk people about microsoft..it was a really good presentation, not great.. they should of mentioned the 2 exclusives they got for the system and the metal gear solid franchise coming to the xbox360 and the alan wake sequel...that would of made it a great show

  94. theaface on 6 Jun '11 said:

I only own a PS3 but I always look forward to what the competition brings. After all, competition is nothing but good news for the consumer in the long run. I found that conference to be very poor indeed, and possibly more disappointing than their showing last year. A few key issues for me are:

    - The sheer volume of gestures and voice commands Kinect will demand of you.
    - Even though a lot of the games are reportedly 'Better with Kinect', how little they showed of people playing games in a traditional way. It's like they've forgotten that the overwhelming majority of their userbase don't have Kinect. I just think they didn't balance the scales at all well.
    - Aside from Halo 4 (leaked earlier in the day), there weren't any 'megaton' announcements, and that's always a shame. It's what everybody loves about E3.
    - Despite how much Kinect has come on as a piece of tech, I genuinely don't believe it offers better gaming experiences. Star Wars looked incredibly shoddy and the Crytek trailer, which looked so promising, lost my interest as soon as the arm waving began.
    - The Disneyland segment was unbearable and, to my surprise, worse than 'Skittles' from last year.

I could go on, but I'm sure others will cover the rest. Ho hum, there's always 2012.

i said i wouldn't do this and i'm sorry if it annoys anyone but here's the mass effect 3 trailer that's just leaked; http://hicky-hsgameview.blogspot.com/20 ... ailer.html and i don't like the music at all. what's with the rock tune and a band playing. where's the me soundtrack ffs.

they got rid of the old guy for that!? tut tut.

Hm. Lots of Kinect stuff. At least the new Fable game seems to have the right idea: motion-controlled spellcasting is what Kinect should have been about from the get-go.

Just realised they never showed the Alan Wake XBLA game, even though it's due this year.

  98. pRM8 on 6 Jun '11 said:

Wow, my cheesy mash tatties with a bagel that I was munching on was more interesting than that conference!

I really thought that the Kinect tech might start to be realised but all I saw was 'on-rails' gameplay with Kinect tracking hands and some body movements for some action. How f**king boring did it want to be, even the Star Wars game was disappointing. MS and the games developers still fail to give me an excuse to purchase Kinect.

To say I'm underwhelmed is an understatement...

    :(

It's a very CoD style action based trailer isn't it? And yes, that music was awful. :?
