E3 2011: Far Cry 3 - Exclusive video, dev interview and screen blowout

Ubisoft are taking us back to an island paradise. Prepare for the holiday from hell.

See all of CVG's E3 2011 coverage

Far Cry 3 has just been announced to the American whoops and European polite clapping of the Ubisoft press conference audience.

CVG's glorious representatives, however, got an exclusive demo of the current code and some quality face-time with the game's producer Dan Hay this past Sunday (that's right kids, for Far Cry 3 we work on a Sunday).

Far Cry 3 sees new hero Jason Brody take to the jungles, coves, waterfalls and caves of a chaotic Pacific island. Ubisoft claim his adventures will wipe out Far Cry 2's myriad of niggles, and we can confirm that the game stabs a rusty knife through the heart of many of its E3 shooter rivals.

So watch, listen, learn and salivate a little as Producer Dan Hay takes us on an exclusive tourist trail...

Roll on 2012, and a remarkably violent summer holiday.

Screw getting a second job, we'll all need a third or fourth job just to afford all the great line up of games coming our way in the near future. Far Cry 3 will be one to watch if you enjoyed 1 and 2. I loved two for PS3. Still gotta finish it but love it all the same. Sandbox and fps all in one, good combo.

I was watching Ubisoft's conference (which blew EA's out of the theoretical water by the way) and Far Cry 3 really stood out to me. That character they've created looks really cool - he seems like a kind of messed up Joker character from Batman. By the end when he says, "Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity", I was like, dude that was amazing. The great scripting of that one character (and the voicing for the protagonist) wasn't something I was expecting from a Far Cry game. Far Cry 2 was so barren of any kind of decent characterization that this kind of surprised me.

The gameplay looked great as well. Stealth seemed like a genuine alternative to infiltration and approaching enemies, which basically didn't work in FC2. I think the cover mechanic clearly taken from Killzone 2 seems to fit well in building upon what FC2 was doing; there were a lot of times where bullets would come from everywhere so that's definitely welcome for the sequel.

Yeah, I'm massively bored of shooters right now (holy smokes did MW3 look generic or what?) but this really impressed me.

I'm curious as to how much better the PC version will look. Imagine what better textures and perhaps some DX11 features such as tesselation can do for this game. Other than that it looks like they managed to keep the good stuff of previous games and added what was missing, particularly fasttravel and animals in the jungle. Man those checkpoints were annoying in farcry 2.

Couldn't agree more, those checkpoints were a chore! You realise you're going the wrong way and on your way back you find the buggers have already respawned!

    Beautiful game though.

You mean the original on the pc made by crytek not the spin-off "instincts" made by ubisoft on xbox/xbox360/wii?
