E3 2011: Metal Gear Solid HD Collection: PS2 vs. PS3 screens

Does it look better in 1080p? Does it??

See all of CVG's E3 2011 coverage

Konami's put out some PS2-PS3 comparison screens for newly announced Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

Revealed last week at the publisher's pre-E3 conference, the collection will include Metal Gear Solid 2, MGS 3 Subsistence and PSP entry MGS Peace Walker.

Ported to PS3 and Xbox 360 by Bluepoint, the studio behind the God of War Collection, the updated PS2 games will don 1080p visuals and run at 60fps. More details here.

Trophies, Achievements and dual analogue stick controls are also promised, and in Japan purchasers will receive a code to download the PSP version of Peace Walker.

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is due out this November.

PS3 version is better, but not by as much as I'd thought it would be. Odd. It really looks like they just increased the resolution and absolutely nothing else. No cleaning bits up, no using the hardware, just higher res. Bit of a wasted oppurtunity.

Right, where's my swag bag and black mask?!

you should have one of those sliders CVG,where you can mouse over the pictures and see PS2 in one half and PS3 on the other half and you can move the slider across

this up to now,is probably the most exciting thing for me from E3,and Konami did their conference a few days before E3 officially started

I actually don't mind too much. I played the Prince of Persia collection and didn't think that looked any better but after a few moments of gameplay you stop noticing the visuals.

@budge - I'm with you, got my crowbar ready.

I didn't think the God of War HD remake was that much better either - but it was still brilliant to play :D

Well, that was a bit of a let down, wasn't it?

I'll still get it as I have yet to play MGS3 or Peace Walker.

    TRANSFARRING!

Looks a lot like an old PC game being played on a higher spec, higher res screened machine, which just shows how crude the character models look compared to newer, prettier games. 3DS Snake Eater looks better.

Haven't played a Metal Gear Solid game in yonks, can't wait for this!

It's smoother and less pixelated, which is all I really want. I've never played MGS3 or PW, and I only borrowed MGS2, so this is a day-1 purchase for me. Especially since I'm a fan of MGS, if you haven't noticed by my username. It's a shame I only became a fan after MGS4 (I was too young before then to be a fan of anything other than Lego).

Oh young Gaseous, MGS3 Snake Eater is probably the best Metal Gear game of the lot. My opinion of course.

Not as good as I was expecting but it'll do nicely.

Think Peace Walker will be just like this or will they do something special?

i bought a ps2 when they were cheap, but never really took to it.

had snake eater, but never played it.

got my rucksack stuck up a tree or something and never went back to it...

so i'm looking forward to playing these right through. MGS4 was awesome.

Not much difference in MGS2 apart from looking less jagged, MGS3 looks much better though.

I love how surprised some people are at the fact it only looks like a higher resolution version of the original game. What exactly do you think HD is?
Its looks like the original at a higher resolution because thats what it is, it was hardly gonna be earth shattering.

Did you know that 75% of your sentences end with it? :D
Seriously though, you'll enjoy the collection.

Current gen textures, mapping, lighting etc, thats what i wanted. A true updated remake.

I'm laughing at the fact that the bag in tree part was literally only in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Why exactly were you expecting that? HD PS3 collections have always just been about adding trophy support and simply upgrading the resolution, which in my opinion just ends up pointing out exactly how dated some textures and models look. I too would welcome these collections a whole lot more if some work was put into the textures too but there is a very unlikely chance of any developer appointing their time to do that.

How about on the new Ninty console?

... Will MGS HD be supported on the new Ninty console?

i know, as i said never got into it.

never liked the jungle setting as a big fan of the industrial setting of the first two games.

I'm sure it will. The new console is surely going to be HD and so I'm sure they'll bring it out. Obviously Konami can't confirm it until Nintendo actually tell us they're bringing out a new console.

I'd say theres a good chance of some supported MGS game on the new console.

You are in for a sweet, sweet time in November. MGS3 and Peace Walker are friggin awesome.

    Cannot wait for this.

MGS3 was a great PS2 game seriously its the best in the series easily. Haven't played Peace Walker so that will be good especially with trophies but MGS2 can F*** off. That game was a joke.

Bloody hell, that looks s**t! I will still get it but those graphics really are absolutely appalling, they've increased the sharpness and....... and..... that's... it. A total HD overall of MGS1 is seemingly out the window now, then???
