E3 2011: Sony unsure on Agent PS3 exclusivity

US PlayStation boss says: "I don't know where we're going to end up on that."

Sony has cast doubt over the PS3 exclusivity of long-in-development Rockstar title Agent.

Asked by GameTrailers TV if the title's still going to be a PS3 exclusive, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jack Tretton said: "I don't know where we're going to end up on that."

He did confirm the game's "still in development", but added when asked why we haven't seen it for so long: "You'd have to ask Take-Two about that."

Tretton's comments come shortly after publisher Take-Two appeared to confirm that Agent is still very much a PS3 exclusive.

    oh god!!

is it sony's choice to make?!

there better not be any compromise. surely rockstar would need to take a different development route if they knew it has to fit on DVDs as well...

rockstar said there were reasons for making it exclusive and they'd be playing to them.

very odd statement... ready to get up in arms here...

something fishy goin on. better not sell out.

Most PS3 games from what I can tell are under the DVD size limit...so why would it be a problem?

when it comes to most ps3 exclusives which use the ps3s potential, no they are not

Oh. And a Rockstar game, L.A. Noire.. How many discs does that use again? Yeh, 3 on Xbox, 1 on PS3. Rockstar shouldn't change that with Agent. It should be PS3 exclusive..

Forget Agent and announce GTA V now.

Rockstar didnt 100% develop L.A. Noire, Team Bondi did too.

Really getting tired of hearing this "We get extra space, and extra potential" crap. Since when did gamers get so lazy about changing discs?

if there's a lot of progress, there's no point making it multiplat, i just dont want it to be scaled down to work with the 360, and the ps3 gets affected

getting tired of this 'changing discs is no hassle' s**te.

no, it's not - but that's not the point - and it's a defensive, misguided excuse.

clearly, games developed solely on ps3 look different to cross platform games.

couldn't care less about you not being fussed getting your arse up and changing discs... what i do care about is a game being compromised in either structure or quality to cater for lowly, out-of-date tech.

I'm gonna have to agree with the basic jist of this post...
But yeah, I hope it stays PS exclusive.

Since they are younger and expected much more than everything.

Spoilt little brats is what people are bringing into the world these days. They should all start playing on what we used to, before they can then go on and appreciate something current gen. Could you imagine the looks on their faces if you passed them an Atari VCS, or the old Binnatone TV Systems? They might actually appreciate something, instead of bitching about what one machine does over another.

We used to have the old arguments years ago, about the Spectrum and C64, Amiga and Atari ST, but it was fun jibes at each other. Not the fannyboys & girls we have this day and age. It's truly pathetic how they are too fat and lazy to change over a disc.

My kids appreciate games for what they are, as they don't have current gen hardware in their bedrooms. They get all my old hardware to play and get to play current gen stuff in the living room. Both my kids still play PS1/2, Gamecube, Dreamcast and Saturn games and still get to appreciate them for what they are, unlike a lot of spoilt little brats that preside the internet these days.

Wow this has p**sed off the fanboys.

Stop acting like the game is amazing to start with. You have seen NOTHING of it bar a logo and some of you treated it like an AAA title. Hell even if it remains a PS3 exclusive, it could still be bad. Oh but then again every Sony game is a masterpiece

@SVD Its quite funny how much of your fanboy comments before your ban, contained something about Agent and how it was going to be amazing because it was exclusive. Well done on jinxing it.

He'll have a wank over that, nobody ever agrees with grasshopper. Grade A PlayStation fanboy.

Come on, he still doesn't see that there is a marginal difference between the PS3 and 360. Considering that both are running on out of date tech now a days. It doesn't matter if it's out of date or not, if you can get it to work across both platforms, then it's good for gamers. Gears on PS3 could work, as could Uncharted on 360. It will never happen, but they could both have been done on either platform. There might have been some slight differences on each, but both are capable of being on either machine with the hardware they contain inside. The core game experience would still be exactly the same.

It sounds like Sony are fed up of waiting for it and would probably settle for a cash payment at this time, unless this is a smoke-screen for a shock reveal...

Can't you just ban him and do us all a favour, you know, users who aren't obsessed about a faceless company who couldnt give a toss about him but hes too delusional to see.

  17. roynluc on 7 Jun '11 said:

It would be nice to, as all I see is an argumentative angry child, but I will have to decline, until he does something worth banning for.

If I banned every fanboy on this site, we would be left with about a quarter of our users MIA.

Or maybe a PS3 and Wii U exclusive now?

lol yeah I remember svd how he used to claim Agent as one of the PS3's amazing PS3 line-up and ironically has a chance on coming to the 360.

Seriously I mainly play the PS3 but doesn't mean it should only have the best games. Let other gamers play these as well.

For a game which hasn't even got a screenshot svd your claiming it as if it will be the greatest game ever.

  24. The Bossman on 8 Jun '11 said:

Damn, it would be a big compromise on quality if it's on 360 too. PS3 had better still be the lead platform and 360 gets the leftovers on 3 discs. That would be fair in this instance.

  25. TheLastDodo on 8 Jun '11 said:

Might be best to just forget about Agent for now, forget it exists. Can't blame R* if they would rather work on a follow up to a game thats sold over 20m copies than focus on an exclusive that would do well to sell a 1/5 of 20m.

Infamous, a second generation PS3 game comes in at just over 7GB slightly over the 360 single DVD allownace. Uncharted 2 was over 20GB as was KZ2 and GOW3. Major PS3 exclusives do exceed single DVD capacity, to find major PS3 exclusives that don't you have to go back to first generation PS3 games like RFoM.

An added bonus of PS3 games in general is that added extras such as remastered old games (Medal of Honour, Dead Space extraction) or better quality cut scenes (FF13) can be included with little additional cost to the developer.

I kind of laughed during the Sony Conference when they stated they teamed up with DICE to bring a exclusivity offer to PS3 with Battlefield 3. That exclusive.. Battlefield 2142 will be added to the PS3 disc for free. Im sorry but... very interesting exclusive Sony, that is exactly what people want out of exclusives...

I think SVD has some points here, but as usual it's lost in his delivery!

There are potential issues with large open world games being on multiple discs, if the worlds are so massive they take up more than one disc, then changing might really be a pain - imagine if each island on GTAIV was on a separate disc - you would have to swap discs all the time just driving around.

I'm sure LA Noire had lots of info duplicated across the discs so it didn't matter what disc was in regarding the actual city, but it did when it came to missions, but it depends on how R* are structuring the game.

If they were planning on PS3 exclusivity and then decided it didn't work financially, then that's kind of their own fault - R* games sell more on 360 and I can't believe their shareholders would be too happy about spending the tens of millions of dollars required to make games like this and then only get 50% of the sales. Doesn't stop it being a potential spanner in the works though.

MS make games that require you have kinect, how about some that require you have a decent sized HDD?

PS3 games are often bigger because of the uncompressed sound and video and data in general. Unpacking it for the 360 takes it's toll on the 360 and can impact performance.

I can honestly see the 360 version coming with a download code, or something along those lines to download a digital copy.

I thought they announced it was 1943 that was the extra game on the disc though.

  33. chunkysatsuma on 16 Aug '11 said:

Meh no real benefit of the PS3 other then the disc space, even then its not that big, Carmack recently stated that even though the 360 version of RAGE was on multiple discs it ran smoother and looked better than the PS3 version.

Change a disc once every 10 hours or have an inferior version on one disc? I own both consoles but virtually all multiplats I get for the 360 as they run better.

Sorry SVD but its truthfact :p
