Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has spoken briefly about the online capabilities of Nintendo's newly announced console, Wii U.
When it was put to him by GameTrailers that Nintendo consoles' online functionality have trailed behind the likes of Xbox Live and PSN, he said: "... Now we've got a system that will have all of that type of capability built in."

"Our approach [to online] will be a flexible one, literally taking the best of what each of our third party partners has to offer, marrying that with the best of what Nintendo does, and bringing that versus a more rigid, a more closed type of environment."
He added: "We're going to be sharing what we're doing from an online perspective over the next few days."

Does it still use those stupid numbers rather than a gamer tag?

Will it have some kind of achievement system though?
In this day and age of people wanting minor rewards constantly not having any trophy etc system will make it a poor alternative to ps3/360 in certain peoples eyes.

So this is simply a game of catch-up on what PS3/Xbox have been doing for years...

Yes, much like Kinect and Move are playing catch up on what Nintendo have been doing for years

So its going to be more open...but more closed. Nice.
The next round of consoles is going to be interesting. There can't possibly be 3 main consoles. The Wii always had the casuals pretty mush to itself. Or will MS move into that position now?

Will it be a payed for subscription or free like PSN i wonder? If they want to beat or compete with XBL they may have to charge for it.

I'm pretty sure it'll be free. Sony and Nintendo have a different approach to gaming; they care about their gamers AND make money while doing so. Microsoft's approach is like all typical American companies; make money and don't give a rats ass about the people buying it. Let them pay for everything. Look at Apple and Activision for example.

The difference between PSN and XboxLIVE is minimal at best and is constantly blown out of proportion. You shouldn't have to pay extra for online play and as far as I'm concerned anyone who's forking out money for LIVE is a bit of a mug, but if your only console is an xbox you don't really have much choice. I can confidently say right now if they want to successfully compete with LIVE they don't need to charge a penny.

As long as it is secure like xbox live is. don't want any sony style mistakes if i do get one. But then nintendo tend not to taunt hackers

Trying to make up for the lack of local multiplayer, eh? Well I for one won't be won over that easily.
Oh, and please can it be more secure than the PSN?
