E3 2011: Soul Calibur 5 screens show new characters

Properly introducing Pyrrha and Patroklos

Namco Bandai has released new screenshots from the latest in its weapon-based fighting game Soul Calibur.

Unlike these early images from June, the latest screens provide a better look at the new characters and fresh looks at the older lot.

Pictured are Pyrrha and Patroklos, two new fighters created for the fifth game, along with an older version of Mitsurugi and a slightly more dapper looking Seigfried.

There are also a few shots of the battle stages including a ship, which we're guessing belongs to Cervantes, and a torture room, probably belonging to Voldo. However, neither of those characters have been officially announced.

The Soul Calibur development team has told Japanese mag Famitsu that the game is just ten percent complete, but that 'fans will be incredibly impressed' with the final product.

Still looking like a bunch of refugees from Final Fantasy then.

Great that Cervantis will possibly be back (I say possibly because nothing is certain until it's confirmed), out of the old cast I main him and Nightmare so it's good to see at least one of my old mains look set for a potential return. Though I suspected he'd be back to begin with, he's already undead so age isn't a problem for him.

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

Soul Calibur 5 looks great. Keep up the great job Namco! I just hope Namco keeps on squeezing the most out of each console.

On my blog over at www.controversy.typepad.com/videogamenews I've explained how Tekken 6 was actually built on a PS3 arcade machine. It was quickly ported to the Xbox 360 in a way that made the graphics identical. The only difference was the Xbox 360 version loaded faster because the Xbox 360 transfers data at a rate of 16MB per second compared to 9MB per second for the PS3.

Soul Calibur 4 is a game where the PS3 was still the lead development platform, but once the game was done Namco decided to raise the resolution of the Xbox 360 version by 40%. The PS3 version was only capable of running in the standard 1280x720p, while the Xbox 360 version was increased up to 1365x960p. The reason is because of the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). The GPU of the Xbox 360 can display up to 500,000,000 polygons per second, comapred to only 275,000,000 polygons per second for the PS3.

Let's hope Namco continues to optimize each version so gamers can play the best version. It's annoying the way some companies always release games with a "Lowest Common Denominator" mentality that uses 95% of the PS3 polygon power but only 75% of the Xbox 360 polygon power.
