E3 2011: OnLive challenges Wii U tech

Wii U features "already available" through streaming tech

See all of CVG's E3 2011 coverage

Cloud gaming service OnLive has called out Nintendo's Wii U concept, claiming in a new video that multi-screen gaming is "already available" through its business.

According to a spokesperson for the company, the video features OnLive CEO Steve Perlman "showing off the power and flexibility of cloud gaming on an iPad and how many of the exciting features from consoles like the Wii U are already available through cloud gaming and OnLive".

Nintendo announced its new home console at an E3 press conference yesterday.

OnLive is coming to Android devices too. Can't wait

Been really disappointed with the Google Marketplace - Apple App store has far better games.

So given that Onlive, Apple and Sony are all jumping over themselves to introduce Wii U style ideas, that must mean Nintendo are on to something. :D

And as for Sony copying Nintendo...
We have the not-at-all-like-the-wiimote-and-nunchuk Playstation Move.
    And the not-at-all-like-3DS-Streetpass Vita Near.
And the not-at-all-like-a-DS Sony Android S2 Tablet.

    Guilty as charged.

Just finished reading the Iwata asks feature on e3.nintendo.com & it says in it that wii U has been under development for 3 years so it not exactly straight out copying is it?

Who gives a f**k who copies who? Thats how technology advances, buy building on the innovations of others. What if everytime someone made new software they had to create a new language? Learning from the works of others is why we have current technology. Its about who does it best. Putting a screen in a controller isnt a novel idea, but it is a surprisingly good idea. Its one of those obvious but great inventions. Doesnt matter who did it first, i think nintendo will see plenty of success with the wiiu and i think this is an innovation that will stay with us in the next generation. Onlive may just replace consoles btw.

No you dont its completly free, you can even try it now if you like .. you pay for the games ...

Go to the website, create an account an download the client, everyone who says its s**t obviously hasnt tried it.

I was totally sceptical but you know what it does work, even when your connecting to servers in the states.

Personally I wouldnt use it, but I can see people who would.

Dont see whats it got to do with the Wii U ... comparing apples to oranges.

LOL, and Sony had the PSP and PS3 connectivity before OnLive...who cares. Why don't I want Onlive? Because I have to download all of those games and can't get a physical copy....That and no exclusive games...Every system needs an exclusive set of games. Onlive, until you can start announcing some awesome exclusive games you need to shut your mouth and go back underneath the rock you came up from.

My opinion, of course, and people are welcome to disagree with me.

Ironically it was actually Nintendo that did it first:

So all those doing the 'copying' argument, should really shut it!

    I have used it.

    Its completely crap.

The graphics, or should i say video, is really low res and blurry on my 30" Monitor.

My PC can already run every game in their library at max @ 2560 x 1600 which it looks like does not happen at their data centres.

And it lags A LOT. Ok it is the US server but it just dosent feel right playing it "from the cloud"....

Plus none of my friends have it/intrerested in it....

I am SO with you there mate. I am fed up of people saying that Sony copy - it's nothing more than Sony haters having some crap to spout! Sony innovate PLENTY and when someone comes up with a good idea then EVERYONE copies it, even... brace yourself, everyones precious Microsoft!

Ahhhh... that's my rant out the way!

WTF are OnLive goin on about?

After sifting through the information about Nintendo's reveal of the Wii U, they did not say that they invented the technology only that they are showcasing it in their upcoming console. Plus I've heard nothing but poor reviews regarding the service and for someone who plays games on consoles only, OnLive is not something I would even consider. So seeing that Nintendo will be applying similar basis for the type of gaming and from what I can see further developing it taking full advantage of the potentials, then I would rather wait for the release of the Wii U

  19. Rise_ofthe_Mike on 8 Jun '11 said:

    @originalbadboy

I wasn't making an argument that Sony was the first..Actually, I was being facetious. Sony did do it before Onlive but my point was that no one cares...what matters is the advancement of technology and the fact that we're getting this neat stuff..that and Onlive doesn't matter. lmao. (again, my opinion). Onlive can call me when they have some exclusive games to announce. Then i'll get interested.

  20. Laughlyn on 8 Jun '11 said:

from forum talk and info posted online about OnLive its pretty s*** and really dont they offer streaming of games from their servers? the Wii U just streams games from console to the controller so its not even the same service really.
I'm looking forward to see what both Nintenod and Sony do altho i had to chuckle earlier as last night i said to a buddy of mine 'how long till sony say they have summat planned thats like the Wii U' and lo and behold they were at it this morning :D
Next year will be an interesting time to see what companies start coming up with

Sony had been developing motion control way before nintendo even announced the move, you can find developer videos of prototypes on youtube, so who exactly copied who, not to mention that the accuracy of the wii is laughable at best.

And streetpass? Sharing information between devices is about as generic as it comes.

Also lol @ you comparing a tablet and a ds.

thing is that on release WiiU will have more consoles in peoples homes than OnLive will have between their release & the WiiU's release.

the issue with OnLive is the speed of peoples internet, i was on BT's 20mb but only got about 7mb, then i went onto Infinity & i get at least 37mb download & 8mb upload at peak time ! where the average is only about 2mb in the UK & people forget that there are loads of things that connect to the internet now so that speed is split between the connected units.

Except that's not really the same thing. The GBA connection was pretty much a glorified VMU.
All roads lead back to SEGA :D

John Logie Baird stole the idea for the telly from SEGA dontchaknow.

OnLive is a decent idea and if I had a decent internet connection I'd give it a go for running some high res PC games on my laptop (like Total War etc), but it won't have exclusives like MS, Sony and especially Nintendo.

Thats the truth. Its more or less failing, they keep lowering the price because people arent biting

Uhhhh...... yeah but what makes it better is you can use this on basically any device in your home or away and you dont have to purchase a expensive console or computer and you can get the micro console for free when you pre-order certain games which im thinking of doing cause you really cant beat that deal at all no matter how you shake it.

My personal interest in the Wii 2 is rock bottom right now, but it is still better than OnLive for several reasons:
    1. No subscription
    2. You own the games you buy and can sell them back
    3. No lag, no blurriness, etc.
    4. You use an actual controller, even if it is bulky. I'm not going to play Metal Gear solely with a touch screen.

You have a point with numbers 1 and 2 as far as lag goes my friend owns one and we have played for hrs and ive never experienced it or blurriness and Onlive has controllers they are roughly the same size as current controllers such as Xbox360 and the PS3. Im sure the Wii U will have an online service that you will have to pay for if you choose to and offer similar services like MS and Sony does.
