E3 2011: Square 'would be interested' in Final Fantasy VII-2, needs to be 'big budget'

Series producer "would be interested given the opportunity"

Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase has spoken about the tantalising prospect of making Final Fantasy VII-2.

Asked whether Square Enix might make a direct sequel to the much loved game PSone game, FF XIII-2 producer and VII director Yoshinori Kitase told CVG's E3 agents:

"It would have to be really big budget title. It would take a long time and a lot of money to make that. We would be interested given the opportunity, but obviously we'd have to see, round up the best staff, and we'd have to look at the situation in the market to see if it's good timing for us... At the moment we've got no plans... We might do it."

Last March, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada said that the Japanese publisher was considering a remake of the fan favourite game, which was released digitally on PSN in 2009.

It would also most likely be utter crap. I'm sorry but after Advent Children I have a feeling I know what direction Square would take FF7...

"Dilly dally shilly shally!" GO AWAY.

I remember a time when amazing games could be made without big budgets.

there's been enough FF7 games and media

    including:
    FF7
    FF7:Dirge of Cerberus
    FF7:Crisis Core
    FF7:Before Crisis
    FF7 Advent Children movie

if you are not going to actually remake FF7,then just stay away from it,and concentrate on bringing the Final Fantasy series back up to scratch with FF15

At this point it seems Square would just put a "-2" on any title just for the f**k of it. =)

Wow. Typing those asterisks instead of the letters really takes away the freedom factor, huh.

Remake ff7 first to test the water. VII is crying out to be re-made just please, please don't f**k it up.

I'm all for an FFVII-2 if it gets the love it deserves, and, lets face it, another game in the Compilation is inevitable if you saw the secret ending to Dirge of Cerberus. However, it needs a lot of love to be successful - ideally, they'd bring as much of the original team together as possible and they'd have an even larger budget than FFXIII did.

I wouldn't back a remake, however. Square would get crucified either way with that - if they put us old fans in mind (no voices, strict adherence to the original, essentially just a graphical upgrade), then the press and modern gamers would crucify it. If they go balls-out and properly modernise it (voices, new battle system &c), then most FF fans would crucify it. I've yet to find a fan of Cloud or Tifa's actors from Advent Children. They just couldn't win.

The Square of nowadays would destroy it, let the beast rest, or remake it in pretty graphics but literally don't change another thing. Camera angles locked in the same places, text boxes, identical game, just super pretty graphics and guess what....... they'd still botch it up. Leave it alone.

i think 2 things here 1)-it will definitely be on the Xbox as well as Playstation(but probably not in Japan,LOL)..which means that 2)Square will now wait until next gen, certainly no point doing it now,or starting it now,(if they haven't already started),so it could look better than the tech demo did, because although we were wowed back then, now it doesn't look half as great as some games today

yeah there were a few i didn't put in like Last order,Maiden who travels the planet,on the way to a smile or other mobile spin offs ..in the end the FF7 universe has been milked to death

Honestly, considering the state of Final Fantasy these days, I would prefer they just not. If they REALLY feel the need to revisit the FF7 world, just remake the game itself. I know they said it's too big to do with today's graphics, so maybe they should split it up into 3 games. I'm sure it would sell and it would bring three times the profit! :D

  18. WHERESMYMONKEY on 10 Jun '11 said:

I don't understand how they can have the gaul to say its too big a game to make these days. Mystwalker still manages to make 40+hour long open world rpgs just fine. Maybe Square could contact them and get them to make it. Seeing as half the talent behind the series works there anyway.

on the one hand i'd like to see it remastered (so that the original cut scene characters are the in-game ones and the game is still pre rendered backdrops) but then again maybe 3d (sort of how FF.CC looks) just higher res...

on the other hand i want a full on, 100% 3d update, i stopped buying the ff games after FF10, because i didn't like the way it played from then onwards, if they did remake ff7, i think they should do everything in engine, no need at all for fmv with todays graphics, that will cut the price down...

  20. DivideEX on 10 Jun '11 said:

I wish they would stop milking FFVII now, unless they plan to remake it, the only good thing to come come out of all the spin-offs was Crisis Core imo. Everything else was average at best. And wasn't Advent Children, technically, FFVII-2?

  21. STE MO on 10 Jun '11 said:

Hell yeah. They could give VII a HD upgrade too whilst their at it. Best game ever in the world universe dimensions and gaming. Ok maybe not but its close! :D

You have Inigo Montoya in your sig, I should have just given you a free pass :p

I agree with your point though, the Compilation has been rather 'wide-ranging', so-to-speak, and mostly mediocre. Even Crisis Core could have been so much better - the whole time I was playing it I was just thinking: "imagine if this was on PS3 instead! It'd be incredible!".

Slightly off-topic... but wasn't there talk of a port of Before Crisis...? To PSP or 3DS maybe..? Did I dream that!? I'm fairly sure that happened.

@DivideEX - Yeah, AC was supposed to be the direct sequel. I know a lot of people hated it, but I (mostly) liked it. I just think it was too short... or at least the end was rather abrupt. Perhaps a short series would have worked better.

  23. MPH on 10 Jun '11 said:

Whether it's a sequel or a remake, there would have to be an option to disable voice overs. I hated the VA work in AC, even in Japanese. Also the characters would need to retain their deformed bodies... it was all part of the charm for me. Don't Westernise it for the sake of trying to appeal. One of the reasons FFVII worked so well is because it wasn't Westernised. I liked the old battle systems and Materia. They must be in, even as an option.

FFVII is still my favourite game of all time. I'm 29 and been playing games for 25+ years now. I base my judgement on the way the game made me feel at the time of playing it. No other game has replicated that feeling before or since then.

Please allow this god-like title to rest in peace, if anything the way to go would be an HD re-make of the original title but only if the gameplay was kept the same and storyline unaltered. Maybe add in some new weapons and materia types but nothing more as the game was near-perfect and still played massively to date for that very reason.
