Iwata: Wii U doesn't have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities

Patents related to the technologies "didn't warrant the cost" involved to include them

Wii U won't support DVD or Blu-ray functionality, Nintendo has confirmed.

President Satoru Iwata told investors following E3: "Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities.

"The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."

According to Nintendo's official Wii U spec sheet, the system features "a single self-loading media bay" that plays "12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs".

Iwata also told shareholders that Wii U's online environment will "take advantage of" voice chat features and social networking services.
