Saints Row 3 dev Volition says it looks at "every single open-world game out there" to evaluate and "learn" for its own projects.
Speaking to CVG pre-E3, lead writer Drew Holmes pointed in particular to Rockstar hits Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire as titles the studio looked at when designing its impressive open-world sequel.
"You have to look at every single open-world game that's out there in terms of the way that they're building out their world, creating an experience and engaging people," he said.
"So I think all those open-world games that've been out; Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire... we're certainly looking at that and saying, 'what are those guys doing? What are the good and bad points?'"
He added: "We evaluate every single game that's out there - I think there's something you can learn from the market in terms of what we can learn from them, for both Saints Row 3 and future projects."
On causing controversy and canning content - including the fart in a jar weapon - Holmes joked that there's "one weapon for damn sure that I'm just dreading. I think it's brilliant but we'll see what people think."
Saints Row 3's out on November 15 in the US and November 18 in the UK. Watch the E3 trailer, won't you?
