Electronic Arts is set to swallow mobile games giant PopCap in a massive $1 billion deal, according to a Tech Crunch report.
The publication reports it's heard from two separate sources that EA's set to acquire the Bejwelled and Plants vs. Zombies firm, and allegedly it's willing to make a huge bet in doing so, spending over 13% of its market cap.
According to the report, EA sees PopCap as another big step towards becoming a significant player in the mobile games market, following its acquisition of Angry Birds publisher Chillingo last year.
The report's lead to suspicious action from PopCap's community rep, Jennifer Kye who posted - and then swiftly deleted - a Twitter denial this morning. "Sorry, I might not have been clear. I was simply stating that @TechCrunch's article is not true," the now-missing post read.
If it happens, the PopCap acquisition would join some of the games industry's biggest ever deals, alongside another EA buyout: the $860m purchase of BioWare in 2007.
