LulzSec continues to work within Anonymous

"Only a name was abandoned"

The games industry and many other industries around the globe may have breathed a sigh of relief when LulzSec said a hack on EA and others would be its last on Sunday, but it seems that it was only a name that was actually retired.

Companies including Sony, Viacom, Disney, EMI, NBC Universal and EA felt a blow on Sunday as the headline-grabbing hacking group released more data and user information connected to them, so LulzSec's farewell will have been welcome.

It turns out, however, that LulzSec lives on in the equally infamous hacking group Anonymous, which has been linked to the devastating PSN hack in April.

A couple of Tweets from Anonymous confirm that while LulzSec dropped its name, its members are still continuing their hacking activities:

"We like to clarify again: All LulzSec members are accounted for, nobody is hiding. Only a name was abandoned for the greater glory."

"Yes, my fellows. We may be not quite as funny, but we can assure you: We sail in the same spirit. LulzSec = Anonymous. Who did NOT [k]now?"

So far, only one suspect, Ryan Cleary, has been reprimanded for connections with LulzSec and Anonymous. The hacking groups, however, have distanced themselves from the individual.

You mean they didn't all open their curtains/blinds/man sized safety bubble/fallout shelter and go outside to have water fights and try talking to members of the opposite sex at a friends bbq?

Well what a disappointment that is, that's my £20 bet down already. You win again Paddy Power!

Who gives a f**k. I'm sick of the tossers and the cretinous sites who keep giving them the attention they crave.

Well said. I didn't bother reading the article but came straight here to say exactly what you said.

I don't mind the tabloid nature of this website, but sometimes it's obsession to pump out a dozen stories a day border is too much, especially when it comments on hackers and Mr Patcher (the idiot game's analysis 'expert'!), which let's be honest are the scurge, the scum, the lowest common demoninator, the pits, the utterly pathetic and pointless when it comes to stories about videogames.

CVG, don't lose your way, just to fill out the news section. It seems to me fewer people leave comments on this website than last year and I'm pretty sure it's down to the quality of some of the 'news stories'.

Well this will slow them down as we all know anonymous are incapable of actually deciding something in a quick amount of thime like lulzsec did, and alot of anonymous i full of people that dont know how to hack and only help with raids and ddos attacks, so it's a small part of anonymous that actually poses a real threat.

So Lulzsec were Anonymous or are a part of this organisation!

This doesn't surprise me. Next thing you know Anonymous will distance themselves from Lulzsec saying they are not part of Lulzsec. Seems to me hackers distance themselves from trouble (i.e. ones who have been caught or widely criticised) and show no loyalty.

The ultimate flaw in all these hacking groups is that it is anonymous. Therefore someone could say they are a hacker, belonging to let's say Anonymous and not know a single piece of information regarding hacking.

So when the lulz boat realised that the seas could be angrier than they thought, they jumped ship and hid under the cover of anonymous, who for all of their controversial attacks don't seem quite as stupid, because they enable people to seem... anonymous. Suddenly, the group that anyone can join, and anyone can hide in seems more appealing than before does it LulzSec?
