Wii U Zelda 'won't necessarily look like E3 demo'

'Remember Wind Waker?' asks Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma

Don't place your Wii U pre-order based solely on the expectation of the Zelda HD demo shown at E3 turning up as a full game. It might not happen.

"You probably remember that when we introduced the GameCube, we showed a somewhat realistic Zelda demo," said Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma in a recent interview.

We do remember. At GameCube's unveiling at the SpaceWorld show in 2000 a tech demo showed a realistic Link locked in an epic swordfight with Ganon in what looked like Ganon's chamber. Fans went mental with excitement.

"And what we actually created was the cel-shaded Wind Waker," recalled Aonuma. Fans went mental at that too, but this time not in a positive way. The brutal surprise caused an uproar but it all turned out okay when Wind Waker finally arrived and was, as should have been expected, fricking brilliant.

Aonuma goes on to warn: "So when we show a graphic demo, people think, 'Oh, this is what the next Zelda will look like,' but that's not necessarily the case."

He went on to reveal, however, that Zelda was often used as an experimental template for how Wii U's HD visuals would come into play. He explained: "We talked to each other a lot about several elements [during Wii U's development], one of which was, 'How exactly will the HD graphics work?' In doing concepts for that ... we used Zelda assets quite often to examine, OK, how real will we make this look?"
