Sony launching new PSN video show, won't cost you a bean

Weekly on-console broadcast coming; Joint venture with Future Publishing

Sony is to host an all-new weekly HD video show on PSN in the UK - and it won't cost you a penny to download.

FirstPlay Screenshot
The show has been created by Future Publishing in close liaison with Sony itself. It will be available for download from the UK PlayStation Store, and will be free to eligible UK PSN account holders.

The series will feature up-to-the-minute HD previews, interviews and more, covering everything from the biggest up-and-coming PlayStation 3 games and Blu-ray movie releases to weekly highlights and "hidden gems" on PSN.

It will be aligned closely with SCE UK's PlayStation Access community strategy, and will feature exclusive reporting from SCE UK's Access and industry events.

Future's first on-console PSN show, FirstPlay, will close to make way for the new broadcast. The final episode of FirstPlay was released on July 6.

Future's Entertainment Group Publisher Simon Maxwell said: "We went a long way very quickly with FirstPlay and this new phase in our partnership with PlayStation will allow us to take HD video magazine content to the next level.

"Production on the new show is well under way and editorial standards are impeccably high. We're looking forward to providing SCE UK with top-quality video content for more PlayStation gamers than ever before."

SCE UK's Marketing Director Alan Duncan says: "This is a great content initiative which forms a key part of SCEUK's strategy to reward and engage with our consumers in a more meaningful way."

More information and timing of the new show will be announced in due course.

I get the impression FirstPlay was a bit of a flop - in terms of subscription.
I always found it interesting - but there was no way I was going to pay for something I could find on the net for free! :?

I am really happy to see it will be repackaged into a free service - to everyone not just PS Plus subscribers.
Nice work Sony... you got there in the end!

FirstPlay was ok, it had some good, interesting features. The series with the girl trying to become a rapper was good. Its reviews let it down badly though. More often than enough you'd already finished the game before Firstplay got round to reviewing it. For a weekly publication it should have been a lot more up to date with it's reviews and previews. Your not going to pay to see screen shots when you can see the exact same screen shots on the free Playstation Blog. It did give away some good Mini games and themes in its time.

    Nice

America has had 2 shows for ages called Pulse which is free every 2 weeks and Quore which is free for ps plus users. I have tried a couple of first play's and i like what they were doing but i was never going to subscribe to it as it offered almost nothing new over previews and videos from the internet.

Making something like it but free works for everyone because Sony will pay Future publishing to do it, we as customers get something free which is always nice and publishers including sony themselves get more press.

Good times really and Quore is fantastic as Lastdodo rightly says so cut & paste that please. Just please don't get presenters like those 2 morons from inside xbox as i cannot stand to listen to zero talented skinny jeans wearing metro-sexuals at the best of times let alone when it comes to videogames. Female presenter please, they are almost always better because they don't try to act, they just do their job.

The thing about Firstplay was... the content was actually quite good, but the adverts were really, really sodding annoying. They only had about three adverts at a time, they only refreshed them about once every six months - they're still running adverts for Killzone 3 even now for example and if I ever see the Lynx 'angels will fall' advert again I swear I will find that beardy bloke with the moped and do him harm - and they started off saying you had to watch 3 before you could skip them (which was bad enough) but recently they upped it so you had to watch six adverts before they were skippable. Six! And they only had three different adverts to show. So you had to watch each one twice! I cancelled my sub the issue they decided on that idiotic tactic and I think I've bought maybe one or two issues since. I suspect that a lot of other people did exactly the same.

It was an OK idea and some bits of it were implemented quite well. They just gave you too little content and forced you to watch too many ads, in a show you were paying for anyway. That's never going to be good for customer relations.

Inside Xbox thats what its called with those 2 emos talking about games. It isn't that bad but they mess around with each other then talking about games.

Its Sony copying the competition again. Wii has had Nintendo TV for months now. Its just general news and interviews, probably for first party stuff and as others have said, more than likely the UK version of the ones already in the U.S.
I subbed to First PLay for a while but after a while it got to point where there wasnt anything that interested me and wasnt anything i couldnt really find on the web for free.

As has been said before, Pulse has been here in the States for, I don't know. It's always been here as long as I've had a PS3. I always download it, but usually watch it at 1.5x speed as most things aren't that interesting. Occasionally they will talk about something good, but not too often.

For example, this week the description mentions PSMove Ape Escape, Warhammer 40k, and the Resistance Dual Pack.

    I just watched this show

    Around 8 minutes in...

    - Andy Crane: "The Sun: NINTENDO KILLED MY SON!"... Well is it all true then? What is an epileptic fit?

    - Expert: Well the brain stops doing what it normally does... It can be triggered by... Lack of food... Hunger (must be to do with the lack of food)... Boredom...

    - Andy Crane: Can you catch it from a television screen..? < Puts on eye-patch >

    - Expert: If the brain doesn't receive messages from both eyes it can't have a seizure.

    Classic!

You had to know that mentioning a mullet would lead to a Pat picture, the man was a king and the mullet was his crown.

Jaster's last picture runs it close though. I laughed and got a slight feeling of envy at how cool he looked, hopefully he's still rocking it now.

That's good news. I've been following FirstPlay since day one and I've thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. Having something similar available to everyone PlayStation 3 owner would be much better. Can't wait to check it out.

It's a shame to see the end of FirstPlay as it was well-presented, funny, and had some decent features, even if it was a hefty download and the adverts never changed. If there are two things I hope they do keep from FirstPlay though : 1. Lucy Porter staying on for presenting duties and 2. Iit could do with the reviews being as honest and critical as they had been. Good luck to Future Publishing and SCE UK in this latest venture.
