Modern Warfare 3 has COD 4 mentality, clamps down on campers

Infinity Ward gives more details on Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer

Infinity Ward has given more details on Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer, how it's discouraging campers and creating a more 'COD 4' mentality for its latest FPS outing.

Modern Warfare 3 Screenshot
The studio is crafting multiplayer maps that have no more than five hotspots where campers are likely to hang out and wait for their prey, the studio says.

"It simplifies it so that the less skilled player has less to think about," creative strategist at Infinity Ward Robert Bowling, told Kotaku.

"What happens when you have more is that the professional guys are using that spot that is either difficult to get to... There's fewer places to hide, which discourages the camper mentality that seemed to emerge in the map design of Modern Warfare 2."

Modern Warfare 3 is also edging closer to the original Modern Warfare than its direct predecessor in terms of general feel and philosophy.

"Modern Warfare style is, for me, all about the high-speed, fast-paced-and I'm talking in terms of smooth controls and 60-frames-per-second framerate-infantry-focused combat," Bowling continued. "Tt's all focused on that gun-on-gun gameplay, especially in Modern Warfare 3.

"I feel like it's something we nailed with Call of Duty 4. We moved away from it a little bit with MW2, relying heavily on air support, killstreaks, perks and stuff like that. Modern Warfare 3, very much [is] building up from that Call of Duty 4 mentality of gun-on-gun, fast-paced infantry gameplay."

Bowling told CVG about the crack team of QA testers Infinity Ward has flown in specially to put the Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer through its paces. Have a read if you haven't already.

MW2 MP became a real clusterf**K with all the crazy kilstreaks, it's good to see they are trying to get back to CoD 4's relative simplicity.

What are they on about, I successfully camped for 40 days on CoD4 racking up over 100,000 kills during the process.

Well yeah, it's important if you want a fast paced game to look smooth. My PC will run Battlefield 3 over 60fps anyway so it's wasted one-upmanship on me.

Question is, to seal the deal... does it include real-time weapons change?

The whole reason people camped in Modern Warfare 2 is because it was so open! If you ran around you would always end up getting shot in the ass because you can never keep every angle covered. Opening up the maps more will only make them more frustrating.

And if you have a PS3 or PC you'll not be able to play the multiplayer until 4 month after launch when we've bothered to fix it and even then it still won't work properly......

Sigh, not ONE mention of how much more stable the new COD will be online, which leads me to think it won't be?

Anyway Elpresador should be happy with this news :).

True wasted on the mentally challenged in anycase "our console great" (foreheads controller).

There's one way to make a camper's life hell : destructible environment. But I guess it's cool enough for MW3. Don't want to disturb the 60 fps, do we now?

Wouldn't be easier just make an empty map with no buildings, vegetation or cover at all. Nothing. Just a flat, barren, unobstructed piece of digital land. Not only it'll be less than 5 hot spots, there will be NO hot spots at all. Easy to make and you can charge $50 for that single innovative map as a Day 1 DLC.

Gameplay: you start the map, everyone are forced to spawn at the same time (to prevent the pros from appearing only after most of the opponents are badly injured) and the enemies are right in front of you. Just spawn and shoot. As an added bonus, the kill streaks are available from the start, no racking up kills to get them or no more cool downs to wait for. Plus, you can spawn right behind the last person who killed you or any other enemy that looked you the wrong way.

If this is the case, I may actually consider giving COD another go...

COD4 was the game I put in more hours online than any other, MW2 got sold on eBay after a couple of weeks and I haven't bothered since.

All I ever wanted was decent, flowing maps, less campers and none of the convoluted killstreaks (when I saw the trailer with the RC Car in BlackOps I stopped following the game)...

Come on guys, take it back to what made COD4 brilliant... Please!

I LOVED COD4 until the cheaters spoiled it.

I liked MW2 but the full-size games are a clusterf**k of vastly overpowered, stackable killstreak rewards.

Blops had some great ideas but the execution was awful- wager matches were fantastic and tense, but the PS3 version was insulting, and borderline unplayable at launch.

I have high hopes for this one- they're certainly talking the talk. But it won't be a day-one by a long way; I'll wait till some balanced opinions on the objective stuff filter through.

And I'll probably buy Battlefield3 as well :)

CoD4 was the best I agree with you guys.

MW2 was okay when it was out but had nothing on CoD4.

If it wasn't for the hackers I would still be playing it.

Anyone know if CoD4 is playable on the 360 ?

There's a key factor that they and everyone here is missing.
COD4 was so good because at the time, people didn't know what camping was. They were happy to have this unbelievable game where they can just shoot people.
Then, the camping mentality developed as people began to care about statistics. I went back to COD4, and my K/D was .99. We just didn't care about it back then. With MW2, it took control and now everyone just wants a high K/D over fun and that leads to camping.
I guess what I'm saying, (quite poorly as I'm hungover), is that no matter what you do, people will camp in MW3. That mentality has taken over, and you can't change that. The golden days of COD are long gone, my friends.

/pointless rant that no one will see because it's down the bottom of the news page

Very far from pointless. You're absolutlely right. Just to add that the nuke in MW2 was seen as a the ultimate statistic/ trophy to have on your COD profile and so camping rose greatly again.

  24. stickyfiddle on 15 Jul '11 said:

Am I the only person who doesn't really mind campers, and doesn't care about their stats? I just like to try to win games

There are only a couple of spots in MW2 where you can camp and not get snuck up behind, so a well aimed grenade usually sorts them out.

  25. united5876 on 15 Jul '11 said:

Just get rid of kill to death ratios that should stop a lot of campers. Tbh whenever I went on cod I felt I had to get a positive kdr in order to compete with people on my friends list as that is all anybody ever asks you when talking about cod I should imagine many other people are like that so most people camp to get a positive kdr. ( I don't camp and never will its boring.)

I was playing MW2 the other day and had to camp. The opposition was around the building i was in so the only logical thing to do was stand at the top of the stairs with my shottie. I wasn't forcing the idiots to run up the stairs and yet i got threatened by some t**t that he was going to "beat the crap out of me" and he was going to " de rank" me. There are times when camping is unavoidable. I really don't care what peoples tactics are if they camp they camp if they run around with Commando so be it.

Campers will always be in the same exact place making themselves easy targets.

Heres some other games/series that have camping in multiplayer, some even came out before COD4  So COD can actually change the past, my oh my.

    Halo
    Gears of War
    Battlefield
    Medal of Honour
    COD3
    Homefront
    Crysis
    Battlefield Bad Company

The list goes on, but if it helps fulfil an argument though you go ahead

For those actually interested in MW3 a return to COD4 style would be good as it is the most fluid of the last 4. I personally like Blops because it is far less camp friendly than MW2, then again I'm f**king awesome at it so there's no where to hide

Personally, i will NOT be buying MW3 or Battlefield 3 until way into next year. Why?

Cos I have just swapped my xbox 360 for a PS3 and don't have the internet connected. Why?

Cos there are far better games, that are single player orientated, that I would rather play such as:

God of War Trilogy, Ratchet & Clank series, Prince of Persia Trilogy, Tomb Raider Trilogy, Darksiders, Demon's Souls. Assassins Creed, etc.

Thats not to mention the glut of SP games coming out.

There's more to gaming than running arounf shooting people and KDR's.

Am excited for Aliens: Colonial Marines though.

Oh well staying Silver then :P

Heard the pre-launch load of bulls**t from them before. And it doesn't matter anyway. They can do (or claim to do) everything they want under the sun to discourage camping, but they crafted this community into what it is today, which is legions upon legions of prepubescent stat-whores pathologically OBSESSED with k/d, and preserving it by any means possible. You can't water down and casualize a game to the point to which they have and just decide that tweaking up a few game mechanics is going to "solve" the problem of campers and stat-whores. When they introduced perks and AI kill-support, the community exploded exponentially because Call of Duty was a game with z0mfgz kEwL guNz and easy-mode extreme accessibility. The community, as usual, will waste absolutely ZERO time in destroying any fun factor to be held with this game. Luckily for myself and other smart people we won't be dealing with this s**t (again) as we will be playing other, REAL fps. Not watered-down Nickelodian arcade cartoons full of childish perks, aim assist, and other bulls**t.
