And the full article about the XBox is on their website now. He was killed by Deep Vein Thrombosis, usually associated with long haul flights. So nothing to do with the Xbox at all. He just sat down for too long without moving.

Even the games console banning groups are going to have to overlook this one, unless of course they really are stupid.
Also, to the above poster, bit picky - but do we really need The Sun getting traffic from here?

i doubt my post will make it through their filter but as i said 'death by being idle' doesnt quite have the same impact. DVT can hit anyone spending more than 5 hours at a time in one position. what baffles me is he played it for 12hours, non stop according to his parents... the guy must've had a bladderthe size of a bin bag. If i'm havinbg a full on gaming sesh i generally have some form of chilled and refreshing beverage next to my chair and i'm usually up every 3 hour for a pee.

I dunno about 12 hour sessions on the Xbox- but when I'm drawing artwork it can take anything from a few hours to a full day- so what next? Death by pencil? Death by graphics tablet? ... I do tend to get up for regular tea sessions which inevitably lead to regular wee sessions though.

But still- I need to blame something!!

DVT is a blood clot which develops in the legs or lower torso, often when the suffer's movement is restricted for long spells.

If the clot travels up the veins to the lungs, it can cause a fatal blockage known as a pulmonary embolism.

DVT used to mainly strike passengers on long-haul flights who sat for hours in the same position.

But in recent years it has increasingly been seen among those who sit for longs spells in front of computer screens.

The parents are f**king idiots. They want to raise awareness of DVT, but only through playing video games? :? Like thats the only time people sit in one spot for so many hours? What about these facebook geeks that live on the computer refreshing news feed? And People that work on a computer in a office.

Killed himself? The lad was playing online for a day with no problems and then the next day he had a spasm and fainted and died because his body was unknowingly vulnerable. How the f**k is that killing himself?7

Slate the sun by all means, but give the lad a breake. He did what most of us have probably done in the past, only his body packed in from it, he's no different to us only bloody unfairly unlucky. And as for his parents, they've even said they don't blame the console or the games, they know they are good fun but they just want young people to realise the dangers, to see this as a warning. Be thankful that they are dealing with their grief in a constructive and positive way rather than blaming the games and suing Microsoft.

Wow, R.I.P. Fella. The Sun is an absolute s**t rag of a paper.

When I was unemployed after university I used to sit for about 10 hours playing Gears of war MP. Scary stuff.

If anything, the only good thing about this article is highlighting the risks about DVT. Don't sit in the same position for more than 4 hours people. I suppose we should be having a break every hour anyway, and looking into the distance and focusing to help our vision. Not that I've ever done that though.

He was only 20 though, an extremely unlikely and unfortunate incident.

  40. deepbluerd on 30 Jul '11 said:

If your going to blame anyone blame the parents. They are the ones who watched him play for 12 hours and did nothing. It says in every Xbox game that you should take breaks when playing for longer periods of time. This guy is 20 and is old enough to know that. Its common f##king sense.

Anyhow f**k the Sun and their bile, this kid should have got his ass up more, perhaps his friends/parents should have offered some support, perhaps he himself should have thought 'hey I like my games but there is a world out there too' But oh no blame the inanimate object, blame the console that millions play (funny as I am yet to see swathes of gamers dropping dead)

f**king cretins, go hack some phones.

Oh and RIP to the kid, just a shame his sad death is fronted by these c**ts.

  43. Legend Turtle on 30 Jul '11 said:

I respect people's right to feel sadness and empathy for the guy, but I don't think you should restrict everyone's liberty by saying we all have to feel the same way about this story.

  44. skanal1 on 30 Jul '11 said:

Sometimes I agree with WRONG, but in this case the article is right. The guy got a blood clot because he sat there playing games for too long. He should have had the sense to stop. In a way, he "died by xbox". I hate to say it, but the Sun is kinda right in this case. I don't like the headline but it seems true. Maybe there's another side of DVT that the Sun hasn't shown us, as they man could have had a condition prior to this, but assuming (uh-oh) that the Sun has taken into account everything, the man brought it on himself by playing videogames for too long.

  45. Grapple on 30 Jul '11 said:

The logic here is that anything that happens to a person while playing games is blamed on the console.

Wanna re read that again and ask who the cock really is? No I didn't cry when Amy Winehouse died but nor did I find all the jokes that came out instantly after her death funny.

I'm not doing it for attention, a person has just died. His parents must be going through Hell, if I lost my daughter I would probably take my own life. And it's not like he did something incredibly stupid, I'm sure many of us gamers have sat there for more than 4 hours playing the game. I did it plenty of times as a teenager...PLENTY!

If you wanna make jokes about someone dying, well then do what you gotta do...I hope it makes you feel good about yourself. I just don't understand why you have to jump on people who do have a soul, do you just feel guilty because you feel nothing?
I feel terribly bad for him and his family...so sue me!

Interesting how many people die when playing the xbox and 360, when you look into it there have been several thousand in the UK alone this year.
The post mortems have been enlightening too , very pale grey skin, poor (weedy) physical condition and usually homosexual . In contrast the ps3 has been linked to increased fertility , general vitality, being a real man and relieving ailments such as leprosy , hair loss , and old age.
I think we can all agree that xbox and xbox 360 should be banned worldwide, thanks.

These above views are not mine (being a ps3 owner it could be perceived that i have a bias towards said product) but was gleaned from research on the net using top science sites and popular news sites too and is in fact....errr.... science fact , and if you've got something to say about it ,,,,then Whatever (shows hand) and i cant hear you (fingers in ears) "lalaa la la laaaaaaaaa".

    News just in:
    AFFLUENCE KILLS
Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire media mogul, suffered a DVT while returning to Australia aboard his private jet. A victim of an affluent lifestyle his untimely death came after sitting for 12 hours, at his laptop checking his stock options aboard his executive class Boeing private jet. The coroner has stated that a mixture of "inactivity, self importance and unscrupulous behaviour" were to blame for his blood becoming so thick with bile that it was " that is heart could pump the blood any longer". This has led the World Health Organisation to call for a "ban on being rich". A statement from Ms T Role of WHO was released calling for an end to the "systematic destruction" of the worlds wealthy by the "plague of opulence" that has become rife since they received their money. Murdoch's Newspapers, known for sensationalist headlines and "dubious" research methods, has seen several deaths in the past 10 years leading many to believe the death toll will continue to rise. It would seem that the extent of the carnage caused by this unstoppable tide of credit has yet to be quantified.

i cant even remember the amount of times ive gone for "one more play" of an "tales," "fire emblem" or final fantasy game to find ive played for stupid amound of hours. dvt can be attributed to so many extraneous factors that its just plain unlucky sometimes. someone csn play 12 hours everyday... and be fine. one person can play for 6 hours one day... dead. i can tell you, that with someone with two brain clots that they as of yet after a year of tests have found NO cause for, clots are a funny thing, and when all your friends play for long sessions everyday (mine dont and neither do i without breaks, im speaking generally), its easy to think "its not gonna happen to me.". yes he was a lil naive to just sit there, but in retrospect its easy to make judgements. nobody's making you feel sorry for him. its aworld full of opinion and perspective. but calling someone out for paying their respects is just plain dumb. like someone else here said, its not just his life affected, his parents have lost a child through a tragic preventable accident. this is something that DOES actually keep happening. can you really blame a parent for wanting to stop another feeling what they are? fair play to his family for not sensationalising this. doesnt surprise me the sun tried. its the f**king sun!

    Or Death by poor parenting!

Really it was more a case of Death by poor luck!

It's almost unbelievable that the newspaper is willing to use the death of a child to sell more copies. Then again...!

With the ethics of British journalists being so low we can't be too far from one of the big newspapers actually paying someone to commit murder just for the exclusive story. They'd probably get away with it too; a few public apologies including press advertisements run in the competition's papers, a couple of sackings, a corrupt government inquiry, and all's forgotten. Job done. Sensational story, and a lot of publicity.

On my comment about money, I just meant: it seems to be the thing to do, parents lose a child - "here have some money! Money makes everything better doesn't it?". I'm not a fan of that. Showing respect is good though. It would be odd for CVG to send flowers or something though. I mean, it's not like they know the parents or anything so it'd probably be a little unusual for the parents. It's a shame he died like that, but I'm sure the parents have enough to deal with without random websites sending them flowers.

The problem with that attitude is that there is a serious side to the article and the balanced views of the parents. The headline is sensationalism but the report is balanced and you have to respect that.

Condolences to the family of the deceased. I am not sure how anyone can sit still for that many hours, seriously after about 45 mins my bum is getting numb of being in one position and I totally shift position to something else. My room is set up to be not overly comfortable while playing games. I have played games for many hours on end but 12 hours, that's quite a bit I haven't done that since I was in my early 20's. Weird is I have gotten that odd pain behind the knee from staying in one position too long as a kid, wasn't playing videos games though, was watching endless hours of...television.

First of all things a parent should always focus on, a teen should not be doing multiple hour stints of gaming especially when they are overweight, that is just unnecessary strain on an already strained vascular system. Seriously they just made an error in judgement and did not think about these things, I admire them for doing something about it so parents can be aware. The Sun again, is trying to villify video games, these right wing religious fanatics are beyond ridiculous...so many things are evil, yet they don't consider themselves evil for using this tragedy in this way, it's appalling and just distasteful and disrespectful to the family. I wonder how much longer we collectively have as the dominant species on this earth?

Why was Chris in a seated position for roughly 12 hours at a time? Nothing to do with the XBox is my guess..
Perhaps he just liked sitting motionless for 12 hours at a time normally and thought 'Hey, I'll play some Reach online whilst I sit here'

    Alan666 said:

In fact it had a great deal to do with the XBox but also his whole lifestyle (diet, playing video games, exersize) and possibly even his genetics.

If Chris had the same lifestyle as he did but didn't play on the XBox/ PC/ watch TV for hours on end. Do you think he'd still be dead from thrombosis?
    NO

I can't see how anybody here can honestly believe that the XBox had nothing to with his death. Sure the headline is as misleading as ever but so are most of CVG's headlines because it is a tried and tested method of grabbing attention.

Nearest thing I've had to DVT is a 10 hour flight to Hong Kong followed by a 10 hour flight to Sydney. Long, boring, sleepless, naff flights - but not bad enough to kill me (yet), nor actually give me DVT (that I know of). Close? Who knows, but definitely no cigaro Holmes.

I'd like to try and draw parallels between the XBox and Playstation but Forza's hire a driver function means I will never run an endurance race on the XBox and while I have done a 4 hour endurance race in GT5, I still haven't gotten around to the 6, 9 and 24 hour races yet. Pressing the pause button a few times is necessary because as you might guess, I have other things to do besides drive virtual cars around. Even lorry drivers take breaks just as Le Mans drivers like Allan McNish do.

It's always "sad" when someone pops off from something like this, whether it's DVT or extreme obesity. All it shows is that everyone is different. More so called intelligent people should learn and remember this. Trying to impose ever more burdensome rules and laws to treat us all the same way isn't warranted. For example a "feature" whereby your XBox would only play for 4 continuous hours before saving state and turning itself off for 10 minutes - to force you to take a break - is not a good idea, but taking a 10 minute break probably is. After all, you can't guarantee what someone will do for those 10 minutes. Sitting there waiting means it is just as bad (or good) as watching all the Harry Potter movies back to back.

    Each to their own!

Once again The Scum...sorry i mean The Sun newspaper has decided to run a totally over the top story, i say again as about 20 years back they printed on there front page "Nintendo killed my son" basically it was a young boy who played a mario game on his friends NES and then as he was walking home he had a fit and died, The Scum newspaper jumped onto this and blamed Nintendo (or twisted the words of the kids parents to make them say it to make a more juicy story) for giving there son an epileptic fit. As tragic as it was the fit could of been brought on by anything at any time and to put the full blame onto nintendo in a full front page spread for 8 million readers to see was just pathetic!!!
Ive read The Sun since as long as i can remember, my dad bought it all the time and loved reading through it....until i was old enough to realise that alot of what i was reading was being blown up to hell to make for a more interesting read, to sway the minds of millions of people to that of the one person who wrote the rubbish in the first place and of course.....to sell copies.
I loved seeing all the out of work News Of The World reporters crying to the news cameras after the paper shut down saying they were out of jobs etc......they have twisted stories, slandered and destroyed the lives of thousands of people over the years while picking up big fat cheques for selling more copies of newspapers for doing so and they expect us to feel sorry for them? GET REAL!!!!
When will people realise that what you are reading is a blown up account of one persons view who is paid a bucket load to make it more eye catching then the story printed on the front page of a rival newspaper sitting next to it in a newsagents?
