No PS4, Xbox 720 before 2014, says Skyrim boss

"Consumers are happy" with current hardware, claims Bethesda's Howard

Next-generation consoles won't arrive in 2012 "or the year after", reckons Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim director Todd Howard.

When asked by PSM3 magazine how long he thinks we'll have to wait for successors to PS3 and Xbox 360, Howard said he thinks "consumers are happy" with current hardware.

"I think it's going to be a while still, I really do. I think consumers are happy with the current ones, there's a lot you can do with them," he said. "So I don't think it's coming next year or the year after."

Quizzed on earlier comments that Bethesda was considering waiting until the next PlayStation and Xbox hardware to release Skyrim, Howard said that conversations over moving the title to next-gen consoles were "very serious".

"We want [Skyrim] to be fresh. We don't want it to feel, visually or technically, 'Oh this is Fallout 3' or 'this is Oblivion' And if we couldn't do that we would have waited," he said.

2K global president Christoph Hartmann recently claimed Microsoft and Sony are already "experimenting" with Kinect and Move for what could be the foundations of their next-generation console plans.

Hardware giant AMD piped up last month to claim the next Xbox will feature graphics on a par with James Cameron's Avatar.

Indeed. For me, Sony have been on fire the last couple of years, and in terms of content have blown everyone out the water.

What is also interesting is that with Nintendo focusing on the Wii U, the Wii sales will slip even more than they have been in the last few months. It's still possible that 360 and/or PS3 can overtake the Wii in total sales.
If MS and Sony keep their current gen consoles going until 2014 then it might see Nintendo come last in a generation that looked like they would win hands down.

I for one want the next Xbox (nextbox) in Nov 2012...I love the xbox and enjoying my current games and looking forward to BioShock Infinite and Skyrim, but id be happier knowing a new box was on the way, with Direct X11 compat. Surely these developers know if the next gen is round the corner as they would have received a dev kit and would have started on their first games for them....

    THIS consumer isn't! That's why I'm building a kiss-ass PC!

Admittedly technical capabilities alone don't necessarily make a game great, but personally I'm ready for a step up in this department.

I will be getting a VITA, but it will compliment my PS3, however. I can actually see me next year sticking to using my PSVITA and my 360 and the next iPhone only. Ever since I got my 360 in February I'm loving it and have and will be buying all the games I'm after on it and I think I'll get the next COD on it too. And I can then get my Unchartered, COD, Resistance fix on the Vita, may get Unchartered 3 at some point.
Plus I'll have some pretty cool quick play games on the iPhone. So I personally do not want to see the next Xbox or Playstation for a few years.

Xbox Live Arcade is amazingly cool. Shame Sony don't offer all the PSN games as demos the same way.

Their are many people who are ready for somthing new and kinect and halo HD should have been next gen instead of a useless cash in,people are looking forward to wii u which i think will be on par with current pc spec graphics and no ones complaining(except spec).
IMO this gen as become a little stale although mag,Dust 514(dust will play on ps4) will keep me busy for a year.

It is indeed. When i saw the Battlefield 3 footage 3 months ago (around that anyway), i thought PC gaming is where its at. I've not been disappointed. Its a million miles ahead of consoles. I own Battlefield BC2 on both the PS3 and my PC. The game looks next gen on my PC compared to on my PS3, the difference is huge. So imagine what the difference is gonna be like for BF3.
I recommend going out and spending £500-£600 (those who can afford it) on a gaming PC. It really makes you realise how much we are in need of the next gen consoles. The consoles are miles behind now. SORT IT OUT SONY.

My 360 collection is over 30.

Not knocking the PS3; it's a great console, but I'm not sure exactly how it's blown away the competition.

And I agree with this article; there's plenty of life left in the current gen. Graphics have now reached the stage where they're good enough to make a significant upgrade difficult to visualise.

I think them achieving over 50% of the entire worlds video game market sealed that one for them.

As for this? Well I have a ton of games to play and a ton more that I do not own, yet or maybe, so the next gen can take it's time - if there is no solid 1st party title from Nintendo on the Wii U then that'll wait too.

I hope he is right as I feel there is still potential in 360 and PS3.

PS2 still had some amazing games coming out when the 360 and PS3 were released and Okami sold badly as a result and I can imagine some amzing Ps3 n 360 games being missed if they rush in with next gen.

Wii U was needed for nintendo mainly due to lack of HD and raw power that PS3 etc has.

A few more years of PS3 games and a company may actually max it out, probably by Uncharted 4 or assins creed 525!

It would certainly improve the WiiU's chances and open up space for it in the market, if the new PlayBoxes (or the Playbox  ) arrive as late as 2014. However, there have been some reports that they may come sooner. I wonder how many gamers would want to wait three more years until 2014? Considering Nintendo's move, I wouldn't be surprised to see at least the new xbox at christmas 2012, followed by the ps4 no later than 2013. Cvg could do a poll, when do readers want the next-gen consoles released?

Remember that the WiiU isn't going to massively outperform the PS3 or 360 (if at all), so dont see the WiiU's release as a catalyst for next-gen development. Its a shame that Nintendo aren't releasing a 'super next-gen machine' because if they were, we'd all be seeing the ps4 and 720 a hell of alot sooner than the rumoured 2014.

I somehow don't believe it, more of an excuse I think. I mean with the Wii U being released whenever that is Sony and MS will be scared. I know it's nothing spectacular and nothing new but people WILL buy it and not the PS3's and Xbox's that have been out 5 - 6 years so a new generation is soon needed.

Then there is the fact that there have been a lot of PS3 exclusives out this year. So if there is to be sequels why not release them on next gen when the console becomes available? So I'm with someone above. The PS4 isn't too far away and I'm guessing before 2014 definately.

Well no, it's over when the consoles stop selling. Normally everyone launches a new console at the same time, but this generation is different.
PS3 and 360 are still going strong so the generation is not over, I'll give you an example of what could happen:

Wii U comes out and fails to impress the public, PS3 and 360 still continue to sell like hot cakes. Wii intrest drops futher than it is now, and either the 360 or PS3 out sells what the Wii has totalled.

I'm not saying it 100% will happen, but given that Wii sales are dropping fast and having been over taken by PS3 sales (on a week-by-week basis), in three years time its possable that Wii U doesn't do well because the huge sales of the wii are based on casual gamers which carry no attach rate at all, and Wii U causes Wii sales to drop of a cliff. How many consoles can Sony sell in three years? Can it be 35million? That is also very possable too.

For me, Sony have been on fire the last couple of years, and in terms of content have blown everyone out the water.

Er - what content is this? I have a Wii, 360 and PS3, and the 360 is the only one that gets any real use these days. If a game's multi-platform, I'll buy for 360 every time. Well thats your opinion, but I think that Sony has had by far the best line up of exclusive games, in both quality and quantity. Lists are for mupets so I'm not going to do one but I'm sure if I did, the PS3 one would span much futher than the list of good 360 exclusives. What you buy Multi-platform games on is up to you, but the key of that statment is 'Multi-platform'.

In the unlikely event that Sony and Microsoft released a joint console, they might as well have Arnie announce it, as it would terminate the competition. (Do it! ...as Arnie would say). The Mayans did say something cataclysmically powerful was coming in 2012, so they probably didn't mean the WiiU...

If the PS3 or 360 manage to shift another 35m+ in tandem with the Wii stopping selling completely I'd be amazed. Especially seeing as console sales are lower this year than last. I suppose there are more price drops to come though.

Either way the Wii has won financially - I can't see the PS3 or 360 ever getting to their level unless this gen goes on for another ten years. They've sold consoles at a profit, sold more more copies of software that is cheaper to make that sells at a higher prices than anyone else etc and given a real reason for each console owner to buy multiple controllers and peripherals that are nearly as expensive as Kinect and only used for one game.

Now they've just got to do it all over again with the Wii U, which will be hard.

I've said it before, screen tear and choppy frame rates do my head in. With 6870s now only being £120, it's very easy and pretty cheap to keep your PC running rings around the consoles should you so wish.

I think it might be possable for either 360 or PS3 to do this (although I favour the PS3 more though). I fully realise it is an outside chance but I won't remove the idea as the factors for it to happen are all in place.

    1) This gen is suppost to last for around 10 years which would put the actual ending at around 2015 so we have around three and a half years worth of consoles still to be sold.
    2) The Wii U is a major wildcard for Nintendo as far as I'm concerned. The Wii success story is based very heavily around casual gamers, and current belief is that casual gamers don't hold high attach rates. This is something we are seeing right now with the 3DS. The DS sold very well to the casual market but the 3DS sales are quite poor indeed (something which as been featured many times in the news on various sites). This to me points to the thinking of casual gamers still having low attach rates still rings true. Nintendo runs a huge risk by droping the Wii in favour of the Wii U, which could leave the market open for both the 360 and PS3 should the Wii U follow the poor start that the 3DS as suffered.

Either way the Wii has won financially - I can't see the PS3 or 360 ever getting to their level unless this gen goes on for another ten years. That is something I do have to take my hat of to Nintendo for. Great business planning put into great effect.

This is very true (I, myself have a custom built rig which p**ses from a great hight over my PS3), but this practise dosn't work in todays mainstream gaming culture. Back in 2005 Sony said 'The next gen doesn't start until we say it does'. Arrogant, yes. But if you adapt that phrase to say 'The next gen Dosn't start until PS4 and The Next-Xbox is out', I think as bad as it sounds, it's probably true.

It's far too early to say that. First of all the other 2 consoles will be selling for at least another 2, 3 or even 4 or 5 years. Nintendo are bringing out a new Wii to meet the consumer demand, I actually doubt that the Wii U is even meant to be an 8th generation console but just a top end 7th gen until the real 8th generation hit the shelves in about 4 or 5 years time.
