Video: Epic on 'more personal' Gears of War 3

Exec producer talks 4-player co-op, campaign

Epic Games has spoken to CVG on camera about Gears of War 3's new "more personal" single-player campaign, as well as its exciting 4-player co-op and Beast modes.

Exec producer Rod Fergusson explained: "Gears of War 3 has taken the scope even bigger to now a planetary scale, but the story's even more personal.

"Because of that, because it's a band of friends going out, that's why we have 'brothers to the end' as our tagline - that idea of friendship and trust is what's holding them together."

News also landed this afternoon that Gears 3 will support stereoscopic 3D.

September 20 is the date.

Oh yeah, just a friendly warning to you lot. Avoid gears stuff on like Youtube. There's a lot of leaked stuff and spoiler videos, especially in foreign languages. Just leave it yeah, not worth it. Ran into some myself irritatingly. Some people are such c**ts :?

Am I only one who thinks this game is still too grey. I thought with changes made to engine they might have added some colour. It looks technically quite good, but just dull on terms of colour pallette.

Yeah, just you on that one.

Its the end of the world, everything has been destroyed in a bitter war of attrition, the palette reflects that. And speaking of reflections, the lighting effects are top notch. I love the way it looks, and plays.

yes end of world =grey lol

its cause of technical limitations that they've not implemented better colour palette. KZ3 was apocalyptic also, and that wasn't grey, and pushed on from kz2 engine in terms of colour palette, halo reach wasnt grey.

While still looking and feeling like a Killzone game, the new sequel saw the team moving in a new visual direction. The grunge and general "war is hell" murkiness of the last title was replaced with a much cleaner look, with design and effects that lent themselves to a more futuristic-looking game with a wider variation in the levels.

"This is largely an artistic direction, but there is some technology that played parts in it as well. There is a delicate balance in our colour pipeline, from what the artwork writes into the albedo buffer, to how it's lit and then how colour-correction deals with it," says van der Leeuw, referring to the internal lighting map that is a crucial part of Killzone's deferred rendering implementation.

"We were quite happy with the general look, but we also thought it was a bit too monochrome and it was very difficult to colour-correct properly. Together with the art director we worked on improving the algorithms that we use and improving our colour pipeline. We have specific hue controls at the end of the pipeline and preserve precision and colour better throughout."

While stablemate releases God of War III and Uncharted 2 both support (differing) implementations of high dynamic range rendering, Killzone 2 uses a 24-bit RGB framebuffer, which meant LDR lighting only. In previous presentations to the games industry, Guerrilla had discussed experiments using the Logluv colour space favoured by Naughty Dog, but the compromises in terms of blending and interpolation meant that the developer went with a refined version of its existing solution.

The existing buffers used in the deferred rendering setup were tweaked in order to give more dynamic range to the lighting and colour, or, as the developer puts it, "getting more bang for every bit in the buffer".

Bah, gears is often attacked with the "it's grey" or "it's brown" brush, but it's kind of out of place here. Gears 1 had a sort of "copper" look to it, red/brown. But even then, it was meant to, the planet was overun and everyone was dead. The cities were crumbling, the land was scorched and coated in blood. It was also Autumn so ....... Gears 2 is actually pretty damn colouful for a game of this gen as long as you've bothered to set up your TV properly for gaming. There's a ton of environments from forests and snowy mountains to glowing caves and cities at sunset, it's colourful. Gears 3 will probably be even more so as it's Summer. However, there will be grim or dull coloured bits.

It's the same thing as people complaining about "Linear" game design for some games, or "on-rails" sections. Neither are neccessarily bad, it's down to how they are used. I mean ..... a game like Metro 2033 can't be anything but "linear", it's set in the f**king metro tunnels! they don't come in sandbox form  Same with "on-rails" stuff, it works for some things, like vehicle sections or train rides obviously. Companies need to stop worrying about being painted with stereotypical internet brush x,y or z and just do what suits the purpose and works well. I think Epic have done that pretty well.

Dust? Anybody? No? A post apocalyptic world would probably be covered in dust and ash so it would most likely be grey-er than that. They've gone with a washed out colour pallette to make it moodier I imagine. Saying that, I thought it was pretty colourful (And one of the nicest looking console games I've seen in a while). I don't think Gears would look right if Epic went with Enslaved's colour pallette. Also loving how the devs keep pushing the ol' 360.

I'm not saying this should have gone colour pallette of say van gough's sunflowers painting lol , but just caus it's post apocalyptic doesn't mean that everything has to be dull and monotone feeling all the way through. Played through gears 2 recently , and compared to kz3 it's just horribly dull colour wise and kz3 is hardly a game set in a world of joy and happiness .

I don't see anything wrong with the colour shade to be honest. I think grey works quite well for the setting and enviroment of the game. I've never felt that the last 2 games were very dull looking.
