GC 2011: Batman: Arkham City goes 3D crazy

Stereoscopic and anaglyphic 3D? Rocksteady, you spoil us

Warner and Rocksteady have announced that Batman: Arkham City will be going 3D crazy upon release, with not one but three 3D options to sink your eyes into.

Arkham City's stereoscopic 3D visuals will be compatible with any 3D HDTV, and the game will also support NVIDIA 3D Vision tech, meaning that PC players can experience stereoscopic 3D on GeForce GPU-equipped desktops or notebook PCs and compatible 3DTVs.

Don't own any of this fancy new 3D gubbins? Don't worry. Anaglyphic 3D makes a return for those who own a bog-standard HD TV and don't mind substituting the game's dark colour palette for a red and blue wash.

Yesterday, Mr Freeze was revealed as the latest villain to inhabit Arkham City in a brand new trailer for the highly anticipated Bat-sequel.

Feel freeze (free) to have a look with your ice (eyes). Sorry.

After doing a fair bit of testing with 3D I've decided that its best left to next gen, console's just can't put out the pixels or frame rate.

Not suprising since Batman arkham asylum was one of the first and still one of the top nvidia 3d vision titles. Played it on a 120inch 3D projector...amazing!

I tried Arkham Asylum in Anaglyphic 3D on pc but when using your x-ray vision to find the most dangerous enemies there was the small problem with them being red so they looked like everyone else thru the blue/red wash.

I guess I just need to invest in the 3d Vision monitor and glasses to get the real effect.

First Gears 3 and now Arkham City ... add this along with Uncharted 3 and it's gonna be a 3D-tastic Chrimbo this year. :D

The first one was awesome in 3D on PC - you could really crank up the convergence too so it's one of the few that really popped out instead of just giving a bit of depth.

3D wise Alice Madness returns is really good too.

I haven't tried alice but yes the cape does come out of the screen when your running.

So is this using Trioviz like Batman Arkham Asylum using magenta/green or is it the more traditional red/blue 3d mode for standard Hdtv owners?

Good stuff, decided to try out anaglyph 3D today for the first time, I didn't even realize that it was already built in on my Nvidia driver software - shows how much I pay attention these days to gaming on my rig.

Played some GTA4, then Grid on PC - I have to say that despite the colour loss the level of depth on show is really impressive for a free pair of shades.

Obviously its no match for the 3DS, 3DTV, 3D Vision or cinema but you can't really complain - for the price of nothing, the colour loss was a minor setback for a very suprisingly intense experience.
