Sony's Andrew House has just confirmed a much anticipated PS3 price-cut at GamesCom.

However, Amazon UK instigated its own PS3 price cut as the Sony conference began in Cologne. The online retailer dropped the 320GB model to £215.20 and the 160GB model to £192.
Other topline announcements made by Sony in Cologne included a new PSP model, retailing for a budget 99 Euros, Resistance: Burning Skies for Vita and a new vampire-themed InFamous 2 extension, Festival Of Blood.
The stage in Germany was shared by outgoing SCEE president Andrew House - who's set to become global boss of PlayStation - and his replacement in Europe, Jim Ryan.

It might be time to upgrade the old fat. She's been reliable but I think she's had her day.

£192 is still too expensive for 5 year old hardware...

A price cut is a good idea, but they would've been better doing it quite a while ago. This year is an absolute sea of games, many will barely have the cash to buy all the must-haves, never mind the hidden gems and others, but a console among that just seems pretty unlikely. If I was Sony, I would've got the price nailed down maybe 6 months ago, so it'd be sitting well for this year and maximise PS3 version game sales. But hey.

Not good enough.
I had the opportunity to buy a 160gb for 190 quid in february, needed to be cut to 175 at the very minimum.

No pleasing some people I guess??? I on the other hand will take ten please. ;-P
If you're really cheap you can pick up a slim 120gb console second hand for about £120, might even come with some free psn downloaded content on the HDD.
I just picked up a PSPgo with about 12 top games installed for £90 on ebay!!! ready for the long haul flight to the Dom Rep in a couple of weeks!

I remember a few months ago GAME and Gamestation were selling the PS3 160GB for less than £200.
Sony should have made the 320GB PS3 £150 by now its been over 5 years now and new consoles will release soon. The 360 is around £150 now so PS3 should as well. Blu ray players barely cost anything so that can't be blamed over cost.
jim2wheels on 16 Aug '11 said:
This is the cheapest on Amazon. Only an idiot would discount the blu ray player as an irrelevant cost. Also the £150 xbox comes with a 4gb drive. To summarise, you couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

Which won't work unless the previous owner has left their profile on the HDD.
Someone mentioned blu-ray players cost next to nothing, well the ps3 is £190 and the 360 is £150 you say, show me where i can pick up a bluray player with 3d playable update please?

You've also got to consider that after only a year the PS3 makes up the the rest of its cost in online fees.

NEW PlayStation 3 250GB Console with ModNation Racers - £184.99 @ game.co.uk

Now, it's out of stock at the moment but you get an extra 90gb of HDD space.
Still think £199 is a good deal?

Your just jealous I have a Xbox and you don't
Come on £200 ? I brought a 40GB PS3 for £300 and that was way back in the summer of 2008.
jim2wheels on 16 Aug '11 said:
@Silver
Yes I am!
30% discount in 3 years and 4x more storage? Sounds in line with any other tech, and I dare say more than their competitors?
Very_Silver_Ownz on 16 Aug '11 said:
To be honest Sony have been removing feature after feature. Other OS, PS2 BC, memory cards slots, glossy finish, touch sensitive buttons they kept downgrading the PS3 and its still over £200 ??? Were as 360 has been adding features like wifi, glossy finish, 250GB HDD and its less than £170 in most places.
jim2wheels on 16 Aug '11 said:
Looks pretty even looking at that when you throw a blu ray player in the mix. I think £200 is a bargain for either console.
LordVonPS3 on 16 Aug '11 said:
The most important point that all of you are missing is that Sony is now selling the PS3 for £199 RRP.
Retailers are entitled to sell it for whatever price they want. Dropping the RRP to £199 means retailers should be able to drop the price even further than they've been selling it at to-date.

You can get a stand alone blu-ray player for around £50-£100 now so that isn't an advantage anymore.

Think you might want to remove that glossy finish point now.

Well mine is glossy so nope

As I said, cutting the price = good move. My point was that I think they may have missed the golden window of opportunity, possibly the best there's ever been.

You can get a 250GB 360 Slim for £150 a lot of the time.
Is £200 too much? I don't know. I paid less than that for my 360 in April 2008 (albeit with a mahoosive 13GB of usable HDD space!). It's flirted with this price on occasion for nearly a year now. I got a 320GB one with Move for £240 in September, when you could shift Move for nearly £40, and that was before my step mum's staff discount.
It'd probably be cheaper if the Yen wasn't so strong.

This is just the RRP though, many retailers have been selling the PS3 and 360 below the RRP for years now so I'm sure there will room for the retailers to knock off a bit more off the new £199 RRP.
KippDynamite on 17 Aug '11 said:
That people are complaining about this is beyond me.
StonecoldMC on 17 Aug '11 said:
They will have brought it down to that price so they can have another price drop before Xmas or at next years E3.
Its all about momentum and this should help Sony sell a good few more PS3's especially in N America, which they really have to do.
Smart thinking in my eyes, though Im going to look at holding off till hopefully Xmas or January and see if I can get myself a good deal*.
*Yes, im a miserable tight Scottish skintflint, get over it

I'm with LordIrongut, my old fat PS3 is running down these days, and the memory is disastrously full. Might be time to trade in for a newer model in time for some of the awesome games coming out.
