Nintendo's released the first picture of the just-announced new Wii model.

It's sleeker than its predecessor, lies horizontally and has a slightly altered configuration. The downside is that it won't be compatible with GameCube software or accessories.
The news comes shortly after Sony announced a global PS3 price cut at its GamesCom conference last night and a new PSP model with a €99 price tag.

Presumably leaving the Gamecube gubbins will make it cheaper for Nintendo to make. Will it be cheaper to buy? Is there anyone left in the western world who hasn't already got/had a Wii? Isn't it just going to make it even more confusing when the WiiU arrives looking more like this model than the old Wii?

Making it "cheaper to make"? It's already only slightly beyond Dungeon Keeper tech! Nintendo have been ripping people off with the price for years. How the f**k can they remove features?!

I tweeted Aceybongos with the same question yesterday and he replied that Microsoft haven't got a press conference at Gamescom this year
everybody has been expecting a price cut for 360 and PS3 for a while and with PS3 cutting their prices,i would expect a 360 price cut....but you mention that on Major Nelsons site and you get a load of replies saying why should they, they are in front in the U.S

No Microsoft speech for this event, but I'm expecting a few big announcements at this years 'Tokyo Game Show' on 15th-18th September. It gives them a month to consider how to react to Sony's announcements.

I'm guessing it will be cheaper to buy, otherwise there's not much point.
Good idea, really. If you don't have a Wii by now, you'd hardly be bothered about Gamecube support.
And I guess Nintendo are hoping lots will buy one to play Skyward Sword. (I'm still waiting for the inevitable Golden Wii. - cue immature jokes.)
I remember reading that the Wii supporting dual-size discs was its most expensive feature.

...Really doesn't look like you're actually adding anything substantial to compensate for losing the backwards compatibility....So, what's the pitch?

So now a £99 Wii?

Losing gamecube software compatibility = not the end of the world
Losing gamecube controller compatibility = the end of the world
