Sony says yesterday's global PS3 price cut offers Xbox 360 and Wii owners the chance to experience "the best games" the industry has to offer this year.

He added: "We're opening our arms for the Xbox 360 and Wii owners to come over. There's a real opportunity for those consumers to be able to play, what we view, are the best games in the industry on the PS3 this fall.
"There's a significant number of Xbox 360 and Wii owners who would like that second console and want to have the opportunity to play these exclusive games and content experiences, and this new price point allows them to do that."
Koller also said the company had been planning the price cut "for over a year" and that PS3 "is still profitable" following the reduction, which sees the 160GB model fall from £249 to £199 in the UK, and the 320GB console from to £299 to £249.

well lets be honest, a 50 quid reduction is hardly breaking the bank..
I expected a 179 mark, of course its still going to be profitable at 200, i guess the ps3 is more than a games console so they can justify the slightly higher price..
I just cant see a 50 quid difference making a huge impact.. but there u go..
(by the way i have two ps3, if u dont have one get one! blurays, all the codec's it plays plus the fact u can make it a jukebox by puting sh*t loads of mp3s on it make it quite useful
)

Untill MS and Nintendo drop the price of their consoles. This should surge PS3 sales but I have a feeling MS and Nintendo will drop prices before the shopping season starts.

bargain. big retailers will knock off a few more tens, and it should sell well.
well worth the money.

Bulls**t Sony, anyone who is that price sensitive will be buying 2nd hand anyway at this stage of the generation and anyone who wants multiple systems will prob already have both/all 3. If they think there is a raft of 360 and Wii owners who are sat there patiently waiting for the PS3 price to drop so they can switch is nearly as stupid as someone who swallows this tripe whole. They make feck on all on the systems anyway so if their strategy was to 'open their arms' to others it would have been done long ago. In short market forces and wanting to get a good Crimbo period under their belt are the reasons behind the cuts.
No different to any other price cut.

That sort of misses the point of what Sony have said here. They aren't really targeting first console owners here, though I doubt they'll turn them away, they are targeting second console owners and the new price makes the PS3 a very tempting option combined with their current exclusive release schedule. The 360 with it's £149 4Gb option is already a very tempting option for many and the £219 4Gb 360 + bundle is very tempting for those intrigued by Kinect. Nintendo has already shown it's hand with the budget Wii and really that is about tail-end of it's generation, while they ready the Wii U for release.

Im regretting owning both as not enough quality games of the sort i enjoy to justify the outlay, got uncharted 3 coming out that im looking forward to, killzone 3 wasnt as good as number 2 and infamous is ok to be fair.
It aint a bad machine it just turns out I was right to pick up the 360 first (again for me personally, not saying this makes the 360 better or the ps3 inferior in general but as a personal experience i shouldnt have gone multi console)
I still think though if people were going to buy a console, surely they wouldnt wait nearly 6 years after it came out in the hope they would knock 30 quid off the price

While it started off much more expensive PS3 has been gaining ground on 360 with pricing lately. PS3 is looking like the better bargain atm.

Exactly the same for me, I had a PS3 for a while but it was not getting the play time. It's not a bad system by any means, in fact for the main part it is as good as the 360, no better or worse. For me the 360 gets more playtime due to far more mates been on Live and my love of Trials HD and Gears of war, that's it, largely personal preference.
If I was coming into the market, looking to buy my 1st console, I would judge on the exclusives alone, all this iplayer, zune and blu-ray bits and bobs are just nice to have extras but not decision makers for me.
And as for the Wii, well, meh!

Actually you would be very surprised at the amount of 360 owners that dont own ps3's. Especially in america. The price drop is just them making the system more attractive, even if they buy it used they will still buy software for the console and it increases their active install base. They do make a profit on systems and a price drop will simply make it more attractive to the many people that do not own ps3's. There are A LOT of people that don't own playstations. I think your being a little close minded.

Its a good price for a good console but was £50 really stopping people from buying a PS3 ? Thats less than a price of a game.
Lady Gagagged on 17 Aug '11 said:
I actually thought the price cut would have been steeper but this is the perfect time for it. I have several friends with HDTVs that wouldn't buy a standalone Blu Ray player but were put off buying a PS3 because of the price. They're now considering a purchase as there is a cheap console with a strong back catalogue of cheap games and a strong line up of games coming. Plus they're bored of their Wiis.

Meh, picked up my (fat) PS3 for £100. It only gets used for games though- not fussed about the other stuff it can do. The web browser on it is a bit pants so if I want to watch anything on my TV I just plug in the laptop. Initially I only bought it for the Uncharted games but there's several exclusives on the horizon I'm looking forward to. One of them in Uncharted 3. Guffaw.

I post each night from my PS3, it is annoying that the browser doesn't support features on official PS3 sites and some basic crap but it is functional. Crap when you enter text in a search box and can't hit the select button, but I can watch gay porn to my hearts content.

I only own an Xbox 360 and it just doesn't appeal to me to buy another console just to play some more games. I just find it impratical and wouldn't justify me paying £200 for the option. If the PS3 was first released with a proper competitive price then I would have went for it then since I was a PS2 guy but now it feels too late to even bother thinking about it.
Oh well, 96% of my games collection is multiplat anyways.
Very_Silver_Ownz on 17 Aug '11 said:
I have both but mainly play on my PStripple
I brought the 360 as well because it was around £150 on a sale in Gamestation a few months ago and couldn't help myself I had to have it.
£150 for a Xbox is a great price.
ricflair on 17 Aug '11 said:
I paid about £200 for mine last September. To be honest I agree with both consoles being the same. A lot of my real life mates haven't been playing their 360s as much this last year and the PS3 is more popular with the chaps I know on here, so the PS3 gets a lot of the play at the moment. Plus over the last year or so the multi plats have been performing much better than they were before on PS3.
That said, if friend lists aren't an issue, the chance to play a few more exclusives is a decent reason to choose a PS3 over a 360 if you don't have either. Although the only new exclusive I've bought this last year on PS3 is inFamous 2, and with Reach and Fable 3 I've bought more on 360, even though I think MS going forward are severly lacking with non kinect exclusives.
Ultimately I want the Wii U to be really good, so I can get Nintendo exclusives and the best of multiplats. If it gets the same 3rd party support as the PS3/360, I'd gladly sell both of them.
And as others have said, if you really want a PS3 for £200, you've been able to get them at this price for the last year if you're patient and look for good deals.

360_Fan on 18 Aug '11 said:
As a 360 only owner, and with the current drought of games on both consoles, it would be a perfect time for a decent price cut that could convince me and others like me to pick up a ps3 and play through some of the exclusives that we have missed. Unfortunately that price drop will not affect prices too much with specials usually under cutting the new rrp months ago. Sony have got the timing right, just not the discount.

So Sony thinks Xbox owners are going to give up their Xbox for a PS3. Hmmm let me think, no more Forza, but plenty of poorly optimised PS3 games. Nah! you need both in my opinion and for £350 for the 2 it's a steal. i Paid over £800 for my 2 on launch.
