Every bit of tech in Sony's handheld right here

Sony has released the full and official PlayStation Vita spec sheet detailing the device's innards and confirming once and for all that the RAM hasn't been halved.

The platform holder also sent out official details of Vita's social networking capabilities following the run-down that was given on stage in Cologne a couple of days ago during its GamesCom press conference.

Here's everything you need to know:

Social networking functions:

  • Facebook

Facebook is a social utility that helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends, family and coworkers. The company develops technologies that facilitate the sharing of information through the social graph, the digital mapping of people's real-world social connections. Anyone can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment. Over 750 million active users visit Facebook each month.

  • Foursquare

foursquare is a location-based service that helps users explore the world around them. Using PS Vita, users can "check in" at the locations they visit to meet up with friends, and share information about places. Users can also collect virtual badges for exploring new places, and can earn points to compete against friends.

  • Skype

Skype is software which enables people to communicate with others around the world using Internet-connected devices. Skype has more than 170 million average monthly connected users (for the three months ended June 30, 2011). Users of PS Vita will be able to use Skype to make free calls to others on Skype, as well as low-cost calls to landlines and mobiles virtually anywhere in the world.

  • Twitter

Twitter instantly connects people everywhere to what's most meaningful to them. At the heart of Twitter are short messages called Tweets, which are 140 characters or less in length. Users can follow celebrities, friends or other people they find interesting to discover what's happening around the world.

I want one! I was surprised by the resolution, 640x480 - thought it would have a higher res than that. Still want one though!

Next Sony, release details of the browser and while you're at it release the details for the new PS3 browser, for the love of all that is surfable please tell us you're updating the PS3 browser!

I just think I'm too old (27) for a handheld now, for quite a few years actually. I drive so wouldn't play it on the bus/train. Got plenty - far too much actually - of games to play on my PC and consoles so would never play it in the house. All the social media features I want I use my phone for.
Think the last handheld I owned was a GBA SP and sold that sharpish fan I realised it was a waste of time for me. Don't get me wrong av played my youngest sisters various DS's for Pokemon and that but for me personally handhelds are a waste of money.

What memory cards will it use? Please be SD cards and not the overpriced memory sticks pro!

I just hope everything is ready out of the box? You know we don't have to wait for any of those features above(facebook, twitter, fast internet browser etc etc stuff) It took ages to get things on the PSP + PS3 really. They need to be ready for me to buy it this time. I can't wait tho :P

No GPS onthe WiFi only model? Oh well I will get the WiFi only one still plus they all have an electronic compass. Will be interesting to see what Sony say about the 3G data charges next month if they do.

But having watched all the videos from Gamescom I'm very excited for the handheld and I think it can replace my PS3 with the advantage of going anywhere!!

Aye it does look good but I can't justify payin that much to play smaller versions of games I already own. Plus having a job, a girlfriend, a step-kid and a social life barely leaves times for gaming as it is. Handhelds jus aren't for me anymore. Would maybe get one for the wee man but he's 10 and has no interest in it whatsoever, he's happy with his 360 and games on his mums iPhone or my Desire HD

120fps? Is this translatable to 120Hz? If so, it might support 3D (with glasses, nontheless)

Again, i think this refers to the camera capture rate.

Every time I read something about the Vita I want one more and more! I wonder what CoD is going to be like? Probably the same as all the rest but hey it is something different to look forward to. I really hope they have plenty of games that are original and not just PS3 ports. Roll on 2012!

Question: Will Facebook, etc. work on a sub account? It doesn't on the PS3. Please Sony, fix this. Let people change a sub account to a master account!

Actually, if you work out the resolution with relation to the screen size, there are more pixels per cm than a full HD display. I've heard that this works out nice for devs because they don't have to render as much but it will still look HD or even slightly better.

But half the video ram which is interesting. . . Video Ram is the all important area for lighting and textures - but that amount of RAM in a handheld can't be scoffed at. More System RAM will probably mean Sony really are serious bout keeping Vita's options open and moving into more Apple territory with regards Apps, Social networking etc.

Anyways - I seem to remember a good deal of Vita day one purchasers ridiculing the 3DS for having 3 640x480 cameras. Where are the complainers now? lol

Anyways looks to be a very nifty little machine. :)

Correct. That picture is going to look brilliant.

There's no call for much higher on a screen so small - even the original PSP 480x272 is super sharp. The 3DS at 800x240 is pin sharp and the Vita screen will be astonishing. With the 3DS and Vita handheld gamers have never had it so good.

I know I know! It really is a portable gamers heaven right now/and very soonly with the Vita.
I remember playing my Game Gear under the covers as a young teen thinking that was amazing... Somebody slap Grandpa!
