3DS and PS3 see 'significant' sales increases in US

Price cuts having a marked effect

Recent PS3 and 3DS price cuts have driven a "significant" increase in sales of both platforms, according to leading US games retailer GameStop.

"In terms of recent trends, clearly, we've had two major events recently with the price drop on the 3DS and the recent price drop on the PS3 platform," GameStop president Tony Bartel said on a quarterly earnings call (via IndustryGamers).

"That has seen a significant increase in the rate of sale of those platforms, as you would expect. So we see that as a good barometer for what is going to take place in terms of the installed base in the back half of the year."

3DS sales rocketed in Japan following the August 11 price cut, with the system enjoying its second-best sales week in the country to date.

Good to hear that both platforms have seen a boost.

Competition only drives the market in our favour!

i have a ps3 and its worth getting for uncharted 2, top 5 best games of this generation, so the price reduction is good. i haven't liked a single other ps exclusive though.

Who cares about the US? I don't. Worldwide sales is all that matters & the PS3 has been doing better in worldwide sales than the Xbox 360 for ages. Come on SONY! Beat the haters! ! ! LoL
(Oh yeah i suppose the US is included in Worldwide sales tho, so er erm...) :D

Huge sales increases in Japan and now the US. People who claimed the 3DS was dying already must feel pretty dumb now.

with a price cut like that, i'd have hoped so, i'm going to be getting one shortly as well, finally had a shot of one and loved it, just the lack of games, however looking at the DS and its 5,000 odd games it shouldn't be too long till there is a big library of games, 2012 will be good for the 3DS however i'm not going to compare it to the Vita, they might both be handhelds but thats about the only thing they have in common, i believe theres seperate markets for the both of them, also good on the ps3 as well, my old ps3 is still alive, and my uncle purchased one after giving him a shot of MK9, i got every console including handheld this gen and the only thing i'm now lacking is an xbox 360, for obvious 'Red' reasons.

I got one yesterday from Tesco <3 £115 over any other and my local had them too after we went searching around :|

Would like to see if this has made an impact on European sales, but I imagine it has. Now I just need to get an actual game :P

+1. this game has stood the test of time very well and the 3d makes it very refreshing!

And if you were clumsy enough to have your Master Quest disc for GC stolen by removal men when moving house then its good for that too. So that's another + 1 I guess.

That drastic price cut is fairly paying off for the 3DS.
