Resistance dev can 'keep pushing PS3'

Current-gen hardware still has more to give, says Insomniac

The PlayStation 3 hardware still has more to give and Resistance 3 developer Insomniac says it "can keep pushing" it.

Resistance 3 Screenshot
That's according to senior designer Cameron Christian and writer Jon Paquette, who claim gamers will now start to see the sort of leap in quality present in PS2's later generation titles.

"I think it does [have more to give]," Christian told CVG of Sony's console. "Each year we're finding better ways to optimise and different ways to program for it. Being more efficient, figuring out new tricks to get better looking graphics... we can keep pushing that I think.

"We can focus more on content at the moment because we understand the hardware. I think that's big."

Writer Paquette added that he'd "definitely" like to see the PS3 live on for a few more years.

"You remember when the PS2 first came out? The games that came out at the end of that cycle, when people got better at using the hardware, improved. So I think there's still a lot of life in there. I feel like if there's too much console rollover then it makes it harder for us to become experts at the console and take full advantage of it.

"From a development standpoint when you create the tools to actually create the game - that's a lot of work. But once you get a game or two done with those tools, they start to mature and become easier to use. It's then easier to iterate on the content, which is key to quality.

"The more iteration you get, the more quality you get and with new technology you get less time for iteration."

Resistance 3 is out on September 9. Have a butchers at the latest trailer and screenshots if you haven't already.

To be honest I think Insomniac need to 'keep pushing Insomniac'. Where they say they can get more out of the PS3 I believe them. Bring back the days of Youth Training Schemes, that's what I say!

Bingo Insomniac, Bingo! I'd much rather they keep pushing current hardware rather than trying to push new hardware out the door. You get more out of something you've been working with for a while than you would trying to tinker around with new s**t that's going to become inferior within months for the next s**t pushed out. Too many people focussed on getting new stuff out that there is little time to invest some great development. Why even bother with new tech when in a short amount of time everyone will be talking about what's coming in the next few months? Tell me all you want that PC can do more but when the games end up being the same types of games we already have with the only difference being "they look better(slightly)", then I just do not care. Tessellation, direct X 11 and other s**t may look good but it's a cosmetic difference at best. I'd rather play a deeply constructed adventure like Uncharted, Gears, or Resistance. They may not have all the full scale anti-aliasing, 100% 1080p resolution, and V sync blah dee blah, but it doesn't take away from the fun and interest factor.

I think it doesn't look as good as R2 but it's a lot better on line. They've gone for a lot more explosion effects etc this time and dropped the polished, sterile look of R2.

Hear Hear, checked out that extra stuff, and it looks slightly better with 1080p, DX11, but what's the point of having all
that graphics if the game sucks.

Stop worrying about next gen everyone, invent new IP's as it is getting boring now with the same old s**t, reminds me of the megadrive days towards the end of its lifespan, sequel after sequel, with the original game always being the best at the end, the PC will be held back anyhow until the next gen are released, only a few PC only devs now anyhow working on games at the moment, crappy console ports with 1080p mostly these days.

is much nicer looking than R2, but its not in same league as kz3, but it uses lot more alpha effects in terms of smoke, fog, myst etc, and this is bandwidth heavy. thus theyve dropped res sub hd, but imo still looks million times better than R2. Its higher res than Alan Wake was, and that looked beautiful to me. Gameplay wise it looks far more refined too.

    Agree with Kirankara.

Best looking Res so far but not as graphically impressive as Killzone 3, however I do prefer the art style in Res 3 more than Killzone 3.

i think kz3 was amazing looking, but yeah I do prefer art style on res 3 in many ways, but then again, im not one who particularly likes the striving towards photo realism. nothing about too close to reality, moral and ethical arguments blah blah, just simply love the more carttonish style. Rayman origins, is imo, the best looking game this gen. Gorgeous!!

Theres been some good un's, particularly downloadable games

Flower, Outland & Trine really stand out to me.

Have you seen any videos of Trine 2? Man that game looks gorgeous.

I think they're taking a risk with the R3 look. It definitely takes a bit of getting used to. I noticed the single player game doesn't use the effect to the same extent as the beta. A lot of people are going to be put off right away when the game starts up. It's well worth sticking with though, I think the beta is excellent now.

Killzone 3 still has one of the better art styles of it's entire genre though.

Trine 2 is raymans' b***h lol

Yeah kz3 Is indeed gorgeous fr33key, and probably the best looking game this gen in many way. I just think res 3 has a not technically brilliant art style , but in other ways very aesthetically pleasing style that appeals more.

However I i must admit I spent most of kz3 going "wow !!!!"

  17. Fr33Kye on 26 Aug '11 said:

Yea but i think killzone 3's appeal is not just it's technical achievement. It's the white snow that blankets so much of the game, and the dark color of the enemies blood as it sprays from their body. The contrast of an environment that feels cold, with the warm orange light of explosions and the eyes of the enemies. Of course i'm only referring to the levels i've played.
I can't comment on resistance 3's look yet, i really want to play a single player demo first.

I've read similar things from most devs. It seems that it is a headache for them to get new hardware. Only biggies that make rubbish launch games that sell millions like Ubisoft tend to push for new consoles.

This means that they're lazy bastards. It's their third instalment on ps3 and yet it is nothing better than other exclusives.
They can push it more? Well, it's about bloody time, this gen ends soon.

He also felt that if you had truely nothing new to offer you should shut the heck up. Three versions of any game on the same console without advancement is not to our benefit. It is one thing to say this console has more to offer, but if it is refinement of code and graphical enhancements, how does that benefit gamers?

  22. Ali_ on 27 Aug '11 said:

The irony is, I don't think R3 looks much better than a later PS2 game.....

Have you played the game? Do you know what the gameplay offers? How do you know the games not been refined ?
So exactly how much gameplay improvement do you think new hardware will bring, cause I can only see more of same with prettier images; possibly with slightly more developed ai and physics, and bigger worlds for these pretty pictures to exist it, but basically same ol s**t ?

So how many sequels shall we say shouldn't happen based on little real differences? Almost every mario ever made, gears of war, god of war, FIFA , fable, forza, uncharted ,batman arkum city, deus ex 2 etc etc. All of which are considered to be some of finest games this gen.

Wouldn't be too many games this gen without sequels, and even most nee ip's offer little that differs from what's gone before them .

By all accounts resistance 3 is the best game in the series having developed the story , developed the atmosphere in game , developed the mp into something they feel is more entertaining etc

I fail to see any value at all in your comments , as they're ignorant and irrational .

Yeah, specially Uncharted 2 and 3 thats the different now if other developers take the experience of uncharted developers i think we will really see next step for games in ps3,but i m not sure all company will care about ps3 power cuz most games cross platforms and ports which mean not fully optimize to ps3.
