Sony's slick 3D headset is actually coming out

Firm sticks November Japan release on futuristic visor

Remember that slick 3D headset Sony showed off at the beginning of the year? Well it looks like you're actually going to be able to buy one.

The PlayStation firm has officially slapped a November 11 Japan release date on the futuristic-looking visor, called 'HMZ- T1', and it's set to keep the same specs seen earlier in the year.

While the exterior design has changed slightly (it's not so slick now), the headset still boasts a pair of 1280x720 0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye (apparently offering an experience similar to viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m away), as well as 5.1 surround sound from integrated headphones.

The HMZ-T1 includes HDMI input and output (so you can take off the headset and continue on a TV) and is set to retail for 60,000 yen (£481).

Sony's exec deputy president Hiroshi Yoshioka said of the device in January, "As a big gamer myself, I couldn't be excited more than when I first played Gran Turismo 5 with this head-mounted display because nobody, not even my wife, could interrupt me so that I could get a higher score."

This is what I thought the Wii U was going to be like.
maybe a potential accessory for PS4??
    Or
will PS4 be a 3D ready tv with the console as software??

This is probably the nerdiest piece of tech I've seen since in a long time and yet I couldn't want it more. I imagine immersion is a big selling point with this thing. Would love to give it a try.

Is this Virtual Boy except with 'Sony' slapped on the side? I appreciate the tech may be different but i'm assuming it does the same job?

Also, it's not slick. It's very silly.

Hopefully they will design this so that people who wear glasses can still keep them on and not have to go down the contact lense route to still play.

Even so... this is something I am geniunely excited about. As long as it is priced well, is comfortable and you can switch the 3D effect on and off, I think I'd go for it!

i've thought about getting a projector, but the price and hassle put me off, this looks a more viable substitue and should be perfect for 3d, if your into that kind of thing, but why isn't it 1080p? I'd definetly stump up close to £500 for one, would be great when travelling

Just wait for PS4 and full body tracking coupled with this. Getting the headset out now is a good idea, it will gauge interest and shows some forethought from Sony. By the time PS4 is released the technology needed for such a headset should be cheaper.

To those of you comparing this to a Virtual Boy, don't forget the VB had an extremely low resolution per screen / eye (384 x 224) and used red LED technology because LCD technology was in its infancy (low refresh rates / blurry) - just think Gameboy!

Now is a good time to be looking again at what modern technology can achieve in this context. 720p per mini-screen is not bad at all. I can't think too many people have watched "The Lawnmower Man" and not wanted something like one of these...

Literally only came in here because the title had the word "slick" in it....BUT I love that headset! Would be better than any TV screen I reckons. You could lay in bed and be comfortable as you like and still see the screen perfectly. There would be less distractions, making the game so much more immersive. Imagine laying BioShock or Dead Space...would almost be terrifying!

My only problem is the price...I think £200 would be a far better price point. Almost £500 for a TV that no one else can see is ridiculous. An actual TV would be better as it can do more and more than one person can view what's on screen at a time.

To sum up, this headset is for the lonely or the wealthy...or both. Like El Mag. I'm joking. Maybe.

I'm really interested in these! I wanted the glasses they used to sell in Argos when I was about 14 that you could hook your PS2 up to. If there is no side effects, not bothered about 3D. I just think the immersion off something like these would be a million times more than on your tv. There will be nothing inbetween you and what's on the screen :D 8) And I will pay up to £300

The first thing i thought of when reading that was being at the cinema. Not exactly the same but perhaps the closet real world example i can think of. Also, this brings to mind the new Wii U controller, in that i could play in this whilst the missus watched tv, only more in my face. Certaintly very interested, silly question time, does anyone know if its just a PlayStation thing or could i plug my 360/Wii etc into it?

For serious VR tech this is what they should do.

Have a frame where the user stands inside with arms and legs strapped to some type of elasticated arms so you are suspended somewhat, the arms attached to the elasticated material should be electronic with sensors for free movement. Then a headset.

There you have it, something that would either work well by giving your body the full experience with force/weight or something that would just fail.. who knows, at least it's an idea  it would need to be something like that if it were to be revolutionary from what we have now/

Catch up people. AV goggles have been around for ages. I got myself a pair of these ages ago http://www.dreamboxshops.co.uk/video-glasses/G920D.htm not from there mind, ebay :D and I bought them for one purpose in mind. Metroid Prime 3. I got my goggles, bought a 5.8ghz wireless av sender for the composite wii signal (2.4 was interrupted by the wii remote  ), made a battery pack for the wireless receiver, and bought a wireless wii sensor bar. So I had a samus aran suit on, everything was blocked out so all I could see was the edge of my visors, completely wireless so I could go anywhere. I experimented and when in a cold looking environment, I went outside in the winter weather with em. When in a warm place, I could sit next to fire. I wanted a real geeky experience and I can now admit that it was f**king AWESOME!!! Only standard def, and stereo, but having wireless 3d goggles with 5.1 would be great, but you need to other bits to go with it. you need the right game to get the most out of it, so really only first persons work. I tried wii sports with the goggles and I ended up moving my head too much, to look around so something like trackir is defo needed. But it was also very useful with for other fps's on the wii. red steel was just frigging TOO good with those on! I'd be looking for an upgrade but too many good games coming out right now, and not enough money with kids n mortgage. huff, why couldn't I be single and snipped!
