Epic: 3D on Xbox has 'room for improvement' but Gears 'looking good'

"We got it working and we think it looks pretty good," says studio president

Xbox 360 has "room for improvement" where stereoscopic 3D is concerned, reckons Epic Games president Mike Capps, but Gears of War 3 supports the feature and looks "really good".

With Sony prominently flying the flag for 3D, Xbox 360 isn't seen as the traditional home for stereoscopic gaming.

In fact, there are only a handful of titles that support the feature on Microsoft's box, which is why it was surprising when the platform holder dropped dual-announcements last month that both Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary and Gears of War 3 will support 3D on Xbox 360.

Quizzed on Xbox 360's seemingly unsure approach to 3D compared to Sony, and how on earth Epic's managed to get the stunning Gears sequel running smoothly with an extra dimension, Capps told CVG:

"I think 3D was the very last thing we did. We've been playing with it for a long time and it added a lot of complexity and testing time. We didn't think we'd make it, which was part of the reason we made a late announcement. But we got it working and we think it looks pretty good.

"I think there's room for improvement in what the console supports in terms of 3D, but for folks who are looking for a stereo experience I think it's really good."

Gears 3 joins a small - yet growing - list of 3D Xbox 360 games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, De Blob 2 and Crysis 2.

It's out on September 20. The latest Gears 3 gameplay trailer showed off Horde 2.0. Have a look.

3D was the tipping point for you to pre-order Gears 3? Really?

Not interested in 3D whatsoever- tried it with Killzone 3 a couple of weeks back on a friends tv and after the initial 'ooh, look at the snow' magic wore off I found shooting at blurry enemies and straining my eyes wasn't that much fun. Gears needs not these gimmicks!

I'm really not that fussed about 3D. If I had a 3DTV I'd definitely check it out, but obviously it's not something that factors into my buying choices.

I can't wait for Gears 3 though! I'm currently trying to catch up on the books!

I have always said 3D would look so much better if someone developed a Kinect + VR Helmet that would be ace! Actually feel like being in the game rather than getting distracted by a Lancer coming out the screen at you!
