PS3 has reached 51.8 million units sold, Sony announced at its Tokyo Game Show press conference this morning.
Since the last Tokyo Game Show in 2010, Sony's home console has accounted for 49% of consoles sold in Japan and PS3 software has represented 46% of the market overall.
Meanwhile PSP has cleared 71.4 million units worldwide, the platform holder revealed, securing 43% of the handheld hardware market and 46% of portable software in the last year.
Last month, Sony slashed the cost of the 160GB PS3 from £249 to £199 and the cost of the 320GB version from £299 to £249 as part of global price cuts.
Weekly UK PS3 sales jumped almost 65 percent following the move.
The boost lead SCEE to announce it's sold 22 million PlayStation 3 consoles in Europe.
