Mortal Kombat has sold three million copies worldwide, "making it the highest-selling fighting game this year", according to publisher Warner.
Developed by NetherRealm Studios, which is led by Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon, the latest iteration of the fighting franchise launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in April 2011.
"We are very pleased with the success of Mortal Kombat, as it surpassed our expectations in becoming the No.1 fighting game in North America released so far this year," said Martin Tremblay, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Boon added: "The game was a labor of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance. Fan reaction to this latest instalment has made all of our hard work worth it."
