CVG's Heroes and Villains of the Week

Our champs and chumps of the past seven days...

Could everybody please take their positions in the judgement chamber, it's time to pick this week's heroes and villains.

Settled? Good. This week has been a particularly villainous affair to be honest with games being blamed, games being delayed, games flat out not being made.

There are a few shafts of redeeming light, however. Thank the heavens.

These are our goodies and baddies.

HEROES

Industry Misc Screenshot
Who? Megan Fox

Why? For being the ultimate gaming tease

She knows exactly what she's doing.

"Oooh, I'm Megan Fox and not only am I really sexy I'm a gamer as well, which makes you want me even more."

"And the best bit is you've probably already spoken to me on Xbox Live. That's how accessible I am - attainable you could even say."

"And guess what. My Gamertag is really funny as well so I'm down with the banter as well."

"Will I tell you my Gamertag? No."

Well played Fox. Well played indeed.

Industry Misc Screenshot
Who? OnLive

Why? For kicking off cloud gaming in the UK.

It's unproven, it's uncertain but OnLive has brought cloud gaming to the UK and we wish it all the best.

Mainly because from our perspective it looks very impressive indeed, with the potential to bring a whole new level of fluidity and interactivity in the online arena.

It could revolutionise gaming, it could fade away into obscurity. We hope it's the former.

Industry Misc Screenshot
Who? Sony

Why? For putting the icing on the Vita cake

We like pretty much everything about the PlayStation Vita; the look, the feel, the power.

And it seems that Sony can't help but keep announcing new aspects of its handheld that just make gamers smile. This week it was the fact that the Vita is region free, which means import to your heart's content.

Keep it up Sony.

VILLAINS

Industry Misc Screenshot
Who? Capcom

Why? For denying Inafune Mega Man 3 Legends

Any gamer will tell you that when Inafune offers to finish Mega Man 3 Legends, you say "Thanks Inafune! Here's your desk and private toilet!" regardless of whether or not he's just left your company.

Capcom clearly didn't get the memo.

Industry Misc Screenshot
Who? Blizzard

Why? Delaying Diablo 3

Haven't we been waiting for long enough? Hasn't it been 'almost ready' for about 47 years now?

Talk about a dungeon crawler, we feel like we're crawling around a dungeon trying to find the final disc while the developer sits on a hellish throne sniggering "Warmer, warmer..."

We're always getting warmer.

Industry Misc Screenshot
Who? The mainstream press. Again.

Why? Because we'll call them out every time.

Whether it's The Daily Mirror, The Metro or anyone else pulling the scare tactics, blowing up tiny studies or just generally taking an unsubstantiated pop at videogames, they're villains in our book.

Everybody: Group scowl.

Honestly, I am sick of hearing so much useless s**t and company bragging about OnLive. I mean, the whole f**king thing relies on an amazing interweb connection. Which like 1 in 1000000000 have access to. It's like building a f**king cinema for the blind. It's daft.

I wonder what'd happen if you downed that bottle Mag. Lubricate your lungs?

I come here to check if Onlive or CVG themselves were in the villains of the week. CVG you are the biggest villain to game 2nd only to Onlive, why are you supporting this f**king s**t????

Oh yeah cuz money talks

f**k you. Why don't you be honest? Why haven't you made a article explaining why Onlive is not what us a consumers need?

Shouldn't sony have made the villains list as well for the proprietary memory cards for the vita?

Onlive absolutely needs to fade into obscurity. They were giving it away for free at the Eurogamer Expo yesterday and I still didn't want it. It's paying to have your consumer rights taken away.

i have an onlive microconsole. it needs to have a built in wireless receiver.

i played the vita yesterday; the touch screen was unresponsive, the thumb sticks were loose and uncomfortable. and the console lost power 2 hours after the expo had opened. have fun wasting your money.

What a total load of crap. OnLive runs perfectly fine on my 5MB connection with 40ms ping. I guess you must be running a 512k line. I know you'll reply back telling me you have BT Infinity or something but I also know you'll be lying.

I honestly have no idea where all the hate for OnLive is coming from. I've tried it and it's great. Much better than I was expecting.

Funny, I played it yesterday and I had none of those problems. The touchscreen was extremely responsive, while a touch small the sticks were grippy and, perhaps most significantly, the machine was plugged in  Which game did you play?

The hate is coming from the fact that they have been slagging off consoles all week acting like they're on death's door and they've created the next step of gaming and we should all be thankful. Then there is the fact that you don't actually own the game and they are asking for pretty high prices for renting (yes, it is renting no matter how you look at it). It is nothing new whatsoever yet CVG finds it necessary to dedicate most of their time to praising/forcing it down our throats this week with very biased reports. (where is any mention of the drawbacks and flaws?) probably due to a hefty sum of cash given to them.

So there you go. Don't be acting like everybody is wrong and you're right.

Gmc basically said everything that needed said in my response. I do actually have Infinity, sue me  I never said I'd tried it, I simply hate the concept. As has been said, it's basically buying all your games again, only this time you don't own them at all! :) f**king revolutionary, cancel Christmas and bask in the glory of OnLive :| And you have to be online to play, and yes, with something like this, there are bound to be many people who have connection problems.

On-Live appear to be paying CVG to talk-up and peddle their product for them, this is unfortunate as it does make CVG look unfairly heavily biased in its favour. :x

I'm afraid that the concepts and business model upon which 'OnLive' is founded are not something that I'd be comfortable with supporting with my subscription because let's face it, in it's most basic terms what it is, is an over glorified high-cost on-line game rental service.
It might be convenient for some people I suppose but not for me thanks, I'd rather use 'Steam' or just pick the game up from the store myself.

Besides, the jog down to the game store is about the only bit of exercise some of us get (I work in an office myself).

So much hate for Onlive here. You guys are just a bunch of yaps. No one is forcing you to buy anything, it's a new product and I for one am glad they're trying something new. Onlive may not be the ones to perfect it but at least they're pushing it and trying something new which is nice to see when much of the industry has gone stale and is plagued by "safe-bets".

I'm not going to rush out to buy it but the tech does interest me, I'm happy to see it out there and I've heard most people who have tried it say it's good and better than expected but at the same time there is room for improvement. Most, if not all this naysaying seems to come from people who haven't even tried it yet and are just looking for something to winge about. Sure the business model could use a bit of tweaking but I wouldn't write the whole thing off just yet. Get over yourselves and just be happy that there is more of a choice out there because in the long run this technology WILL benefit YOU.

And maybe CVG has recieved some money for advertising, maybe they haven't but either way they wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't reporting this and I bet you would all still be whining.

How, exactly, is people stating that they have no interest in OnLive, pointing out the flaws in OnLive, and saying that they won't be purchasing OnLive, "whining?" Could you explain that, please?

The only person in this thread who appears to be "whining", is you.

It's only something new as far as using Blu-ray was something new. The games are still just as 'stale' and 'safe' if that's what you believe - they're all on console or PC anyway!

How will this technology benefit anyone other than publishers? Please do explain, because at the moment it's just paying to have consumer rights taken away. What happens if OnLive goes bankrupt? When that happens you lose everything. If Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo were to go bankrupt tomorrow at least I'd still be able to play everything I've bought to date. Even worse than that - what happens if a game doesn't have enough players for OnLive to find worth their time and they pull the plug on something that I've paid for - something they can and will do. What happens to these games if people in the future want to play them? Do they vanish into the nether? And that they still have the f**king gall to charge full price for these games sickens me. THAT is why I personally loathe OnLive and why I want it to fail. I don't care about graphics or ping - it's the concept that is broken, not the implementation. That is also why I want it to fail - so Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo don't get ideas about it. Because the day that happens is the day I give up modern gaming and stick to the consoles and games I know will be with me 'till I die.

So playing games using greater graphical power than your PC can handle via streaming isn't new? If you can name another cloud gaming device I'm all ears. I haven't seen or heard of it being done before but I havent checked. Like I said, it can be tweaked, onlive isn't the be-all and end all but I like the idea. Things are always open to change and if this doesn't work out they can change it.

There sure were a lot of what-ifs in your reply, and you're saying that's why it isn't for you yet you're wishing it on others who have decided to try this out? Seems a bit c**tish to me. I personally hope it doesn't fail but I do hope they make some changes to their business plan. I like the idea of cloud gaming and yes there are problems that need to be ironed out and I'm not rushing out to buy it but wanting the whole thing to collapse around someones head instead of just fixing the problems just makes you seem like an ass.

  23. damoxuk on 25 Sep '11 said:

Well by all accounts onlive is pretty much 720p without much graphical scaling at all - if any. This service may be ok for people with 5 year+ pc's or netbooks but for the rest nah.

Yes because streaming a game over the internet is something that has revolutionised gaming :? The gaming experience is worse than what we already have.

And all this s**t about but it makes games possible on old PCs. Its much cheaper to buy a console and have superior image quality and gameplay. Or just buy a new PC.

The games are 2- 3 times more expensive onlive as well voiding the whole 'saving money on hardware s**te'

Why pay a s**t load more for a game you can play for a limited time and offers a worse experience and you can't just play at any time. I for one like to be able to play my games when the net goes down.
