While unannounced, it's safe to assume EA is working on a third episode in its successful horror series, and first details have hit the rumour mill today.

Isaac will apparently find himself trudging through blizzard conditions after crash-landing on the planet. First tasked with making his way to an abandoned waystation for shelter, Isaac encounters a near-dead survivor who tells him of other survivors who fled to another facility.
According to the report, which gets its info from the same source that accurately leaked details of EA's Syndicate, Isaac gets reacquainted with Ellie of Dead Space 1 fame before encountering a new enemy known as "The Hive Mind".
Siliconera gets more specific, but being conscious of spoilers we'll let you hit the source link for more.
This comes shortly after Dead Space 3 artwork was seemingly leaked into the public domain via a news program in Israel. Asked for comment on the video, an EA spokesman said: "We don't have any news about the Dead Space franchise at this time."

I thought there were no necromorphs on Hoth?

That was a long time ago.

Ellie was in Dead Space 2 and The Hive Mind was the main boss of the first game. I want to believe this source because an ice planet sounds like the next thing after a deserted mining vessel/mined planet and a space station.

I think it's time we went to war with the Scientologists too.
I mean Unitologists, of course.

Its a shame the second game was so poo, going throught churchs and peoples bedrooms didnt fit the world of Dead Space imo, love the first game tho, and extraction was pretty cool.

Agreed. Those who have crossed in to the realm of delusion and actively try to bring about what amounts to the single greatest threat to humanity must be dealt with. Forcibly or otherwise. (I am of course referring to the fictional Unitologists.)

Agree with DS2 being s**t, they need to go back and look at DS1 before they decide how to approach the third.

Hopefully it will capture the atmosphere of The Thing - one of the eeriest horror flicks out there.

Dead Space 2 was, as you so sweetly put it...' s**t'?
I cannot shake my head furiously enough in utter disgust, without it falling off anyway.
If you can say such things about a game like that (END SEGMENT EXCEPTED) well i just plain want to blow raspberries right in your faces sirs!

There's only so much you can do on a space ship i suppose. maaybe going planet side is the best option

Agreed. Even today John Carpenter's masterful touch for horror holds up well in The Thing, IMO.

Really you guys liked the first but not the 2nd? I thought dead space 2 was bloody brilliant. In fact its so far my game of the year.
Didn't ea close the studio a few weeks ago? Maybe I dreamed that, or have gone crazy ...like Issac ...Issac from 2011's game of the year dead space 2.

Loved dead space but wasn't to keen on dead space 2 especially the multiplayer, il probably rent dead space 3 before even thinking about buying it.

I thought it was a good game but halfway through i lost all interest and just trudged through it for a few trophies. Titan never felt as eerie and atmospheric as the Ishimura did and that's the reason i loved Dead Space so much.

Dead Space 2 is one of my favourite games this year. I really don't understand the morons who attack this game. If you are going to criticise it at least give a reason rather than a swear word you ignorant hillbillies!

I disagree I thought it was really good. Its a shame the internet lets you come on here to moan about your own personal bitchy opinions

Dead Space was awesome.
Dead Space 2 was 'almost' as awesome.
Here's hoping Dead Space 3 can live up to the legacy. If it has half the atmosphere that The Thing has, then it'll be the best Dead Space to date.
My only slight concern is how quickly these are arriving. Look at how long it took Resi to get to the 3rd instalment. Of course, it may not affect the quality - Assassins Creed has showed me that yearly instalments do not necessarily mean a drop in quality.

DS2 was a great game, not as scary or as claustrophobic as DS1 admittedly, but still a solid offering. If they can combine the silky visuals of 2 with the creeping nastiness of 1 they'll be onto a winner. If they don't experiment with the formula they won't find the perfect one, will they?
The Thing is also one of my favourite films, the blu-ray is only about a fiver so I treat myself the other day, and it polishes up very well. 'You gotta be f**king kidding me!' is quite posibly my favourite movie quote. Its the sort of thing I say on a regular basis, albeit not quite under the same provocations as the guy in the film.

It was one of the smaller side studios that helped develop DS2, but not the main Visceral studio responsible for the "heavy lifting" in DS2.

Lol I was going just going to say that Ellie was on Dead Space 2 not 1 but someone beat me to it.
Im just glad there will be a 3rd. I dont need to know rumours about where it might be set.

Morons? Because they have a differing opinion to you, really?
Dead Space 2 wasn't bad by any means but, as someone who rated the first DS as one of the finest games this gen, I found it unforgivable that they would abandon everything that made the first one so great and just throw endless waves of enemies at you in the second half of DS2.
I like the sound of an ice planet setting for number 3. Maybe you could track enemies (or they could track you) by following footprints in the snow. I'd like to see blizzards blowing in from time to time and greatly reduce visibility and allow enemies sneak right up on top of you without you seeing them. And maybe have the ability to use your flamethrower to send enemies crashing through the ice in frozen lakes. There's a lot of possibilities, really.
It better not be fake!
Beebop10 on 27 Sep '11 said:
They seriously need to consider ditching the Necromorphs, they're becoming to DS what HL2's ubiquitous Homer head crab, zombie model and Antlion hordes have become- repetitive yawn inducers rather than what should be scary. You can never have enough different enemies imho, all using varied tactics, keeps play interesting.
The backstory of the Dead Space universe itself is pretty cool , finding clues to their history was often far more interesting than the run and gun in DS 1.
paperywhiteboy on 27 Sep '11 said:
I enjoyed DS2, but as an action game, not horror. The only time I ever felt properly threatened was the section when you returned to the Ishimura. In my head i see the setting of an ice planet as a good prospect, but who knows.
MANYOO4EVA on 27 Sep '11 said:
People need to realise that Visecral games intended DS 2 to be like Aliens, more action orientated, where as DS 1 was to more akin to Alien (but with more enemies). That may sound contradictory but that is how it is.
Dead Space 2'a campaign was awesome but the MP was tacked on and pointless - a horde mode (solo and co-op) would have been more appropriate in my opinion.
Can't wait for DS 3 though.
gmcb007 on 27 Sep '11 said:
If DS3 turns out to be an action-fest then the franchise has been killed/milked. Dead Space was brillant, it recaptured some of the magic that has been lost in the modern survival horror. But the 2nd was a step down compared to the first. The multiplayer needs to be ditched as well. An utter waste of space and development time plus it really isn't needed.
The next game should try and make us feel entrapped again. A deserted icy planet is a good setting for just that. You can bring in the factor of freezing to go along with O2.
@beetle
p**s off you ignorant twonk. It's called opinions

I thought there was going to be a 2nd dlc for ds2 the 1st piece of dlc was great but a little short.

spaceman_DOUG on 27 Sep '11 said:
DS2 was just an action game, that's fine in itself but why not set it in a different universe rather than as a sequel to Dead Space?
nezzko on 28 Sep '11 said:
Because it doesn't hurt anyone to try a different way of tackling the same problems?
Because you would have had just as many people saying 'Dead Space 2 was exactly the same as Dead Space 1 but with better graphics'?( and not in the good sense)
It was a no win situation really, not everyone was going to like what they did, but the important thing is it worked.
Sure, the end sections failed to properly homage Aliens with a race against time by making wave after wave of necros come after you, sure the Multiplayer was pointless, however, the opening sections are some of the finest in modern gaming, The jumps were far more fluid, and the sound and score nailed it.
I like the first game, it has it's own feel to it, i agree, just that playing it again after DS2 shows up some very shoddy bits that were improved upon(notably some of the 'jump' moments you see before the musical cue even kicks in, maybe that's just my copy? i don't know)
Not having a dig at you for your opinion, just offering my answer to the question you asked.Debate is good and healthy!
spaceman_DOUG on 28 Sep '11 said:
It doesn't hurt anybody but with an already crowded market for shooters it's disappointing.
I don't think that's true, I think if they tried to better the first game in terms of atmosphere and story it would get more praise.
The opening section is pretty run of the mill.
I never really noticed it but then again the jump bits are the worst parts of these games and were obviously signposted.

What's with all the negative comments for Dead Space 2? Sure it lacked the originality of the first and the story was a bit lame but in many ways it was a better game. Visceral really upped the scare factor with the psychological elements and some great new additions to the enemy roster, especially those raptor necromorphs they were terrifying! The Ishimura level really showed just how much Visceral have improved on creating a suspenseful atmosphere as it was infinitely more terrifying than anything the original had to offer.
I love the Dead Space franchise and hope these rumours are true as an outdoor environment would really shake up the Dead Space formula of closed spaces and spooky corridors.

Because everyone wants to shoot the sh*t out of necromorphs - the bloody layabouts never contribute anything of worth and it's time they got what's coming to them i.e. blasted back to heaven/hell/oblivion/reincarnation.
Well that's what some people think anyway, omg they're so morphist.

Well I thought they were scary, but in a jumpy way not in an, I can't sleep I'm so terrified necromorphs will get me way. And yeah I found the second scarier than the first. The new and varied enemies coupled with the fantastic job Visceral did building anxiety and anticipation for the next encounter, by at times painstakingly prolonging it, really made for a more chilling experience than the original.
MrPirtniw on 7 Dec '11 said:
The second half of DS2 was awful IMO- was just a Resident Evil clone with clunky controls and wave after wave of enemies. I quite enjoyed the first game but I haven't found either of them remotely scary. The constant waves of necromorphs became an irritation more than anything. And Isaac is the single most useless game hero I've ever had to control.
I think a new game of The Thing should be made- one where weapons are severly restricted and where any of your friends could be the alien- having it randomized each time or something. The feeling of isolation whilst being unarmed and totally paranoid that your 'friend' could, at any moment, mutate into a gooey killing machine would be terrifying.
