Ubisoft explains Beyond Good & Evil 2 move to next-gen

Creator gives reasons for game's no-show on current consoles

Michel Ancel, creative director at Ubisoft and creator of Beyond Good & Evil, has revealed why the sequel to the cult-favourite won't be released on the current crop of games consoles.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Ancel admitted the studio has been "working on it for a long time" and that it has "had some technical issues".

"It's a complex game. The first Beyond Good & Evil, when I sent the technical document to Sony, it was the time of the Emotion Engine on the PlayStation 2. We had the feeling that we could do whatever we wanted. We sent them the document, it was about planets, going from planet to planet, towns to towns and all these things. But in the end, what we were really about to do was far less than what we wanted," he said.

"And of course, the scope of Beyond Good & Evil is large - you've got the city, the ocean, the moon and the space ship... And my thing is that we really want to make the game that was previously imagined, with all this feeling of travelling. Mass Effect did a good job on that side, and I think that there are a lot of things to do to continue in that direction, with storytelling and a massive world," he added.

When asked if that was the reason Beyond Good & Evil 2 won't appear on the current generation of consoles, Ancel replied "Yeah, yeah. That's the reason."

Back at E3 2010 Ancel reassured fans the game was still in development, going as far as to say some elements of the title are "done".

Given the emphasis on photography in the original, i think the Wii U controller could be absolutely perfect for BG&E 2.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ancel and co announce that that's where it's headed, especially as they speak so highly of the format and were one of the first partners to pin their flag to the mast.

Wait... Did he just liken Beyond Good & Evil 2 to Mass Effect? My excitement just achieved rock-solidarity. Roll on next gen!

    Brilliant.

Ruined the game for me, trying to learn the controls at the expense of every other game you play was too much to ask, what a shame.

Anyone else think that MAYBE they have the development tools for the next gen and so are just going with that?

If so, maybe next E3 we will hear about the Xbox 3 or maybe even the PS4!

Bulls**t. Whatever he comes up with in BG&E2 will in no way not be possible on current gen. Unless he's coming up with some amazing new game play mechanics in this game which, after looking at the first one and having played it, was not technologically amazingly, I think I'll stick to the idea that he's just having huge problems getting the project together. Beyond Good and Evil isn't exactly up there on the list of technological powerhouses and I don't see that changing for a sequel which will no doubt follow suit.

My bet's on the game being weak in the game play area, he can't get enough momentum with the project, he can't live up to the first game which may have been overlooked but was definitely not as amazing as a lot of fans make it out to be, and he simply wants to try his best to get it released at a time when people will be obsessed with new more powerful consoles and the better looking graphics will grip the player more than the basic game play.

You would have thought they would have sorted out that little issue for it's HD re-release, but they couldn't be bloody bothered. Ruined the game for me. :x

Yep, I downloaded the trial and didn't give it a chance because I didn't want to readjust.

Well there have rumours of ps4 being made from late this year for next, and maybe devs have an idea of whats being made.Devs dont need kits therell just combine some pcs and make games until they get proper specs.
