New Rage patch will fix blurry textures - Carmack

id's tweaking continues for the disgruntled PC crowd

id's work on the PC version of Rage is ongoing as the developer promises another patch soon that'll fix the game's blurry textures.

RAGE Screenshot
The PC version of Rage has had such a rocky start that even John Carmack himself has called this month's troubled launch a "cluster f***".

A patch for the PC version of Rage was released last weekend looking to address the outcry over performance complaints from gamers, who have been experiencing everything from dodgy textures to an unplayable game.

And there's more on the way as Carmack has confirmed via Twitter: "We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage."

There's no date however, so keep your eyes peeled.

Never have I played (well, tried too) a game that was/is so unplayable. As a gamer that can appreciate great gameplay and graphics alike, Rage is a f**king disgrace to gamers and that's putting it mildly.

My copy is in the bin, I wouldn't even embarrass myself by giving it away to someone else.

Bit ironic that the version which should look the best is the one with the blurry textures.

I imagine pc owners never expected to “experience rage“ in quite the manner they have done!

Well, most experienced PC owners know (very sadly) not to even bother buying most games on day 1. It'll get even cheaper, and start working properly before long, wait til then.

Things as this are not unheard of (by any means, sadly), yet I am surprised to the extent it's plagued Rage by Id no less! I'm glad I didn't punt for a day one purchase, and now with other much anticipated titles about to drop (along with my existing backlog of games) Rage is becoming a much later purchase (5-10 pounds).

Praise to Jah that I didn't give carmack my money for this, he of all people should have more respect for the PC gaming community. Now with Skyrim and BF3 out in the next few weeks Rage will be long forgotten!

I wish I could do that but it's a freaking digital copy. Not gonna bother with id anymore.

Yeah, its quite befitting that the game is called Rage as I can imagine plenty of people reacting much worse than I did. A lot of people have been blaming the reviewers for not including or even mentioning any of the problems that most players were experiencing but its come out that the reviewers had to play and review the game in a controlled environment on machines configured by id. Now we know why.

I'm not naive enough to think that games get released bug free, there will always be bugs/glitches etc with any release and I can accept that. I did play through FO3 and FO:NV after all... What gets my goat is the fact that id must have known about the state the game was in, a state worse than any other game I have ever played that was unplayable to a high percentage of people but they still let people buy it. That's a worrying precedent. Anyway I'm done with id and Carmack, he can spout his bulls**t all day long for all I care I'm not buying any games produced by him again.

Right, while I'm in this mood. Anyone else getting p**sed off at FIFA12? Anyone? Its the most frustrating game since FIFA11. Its the small niggly things in matches where EA have tried to make the game more difficult but all they have done is make the game feel like its cheating. Biased refs, 50/50's that you lose 90% of the time and AI controlled players with possession instantly moving in the opposite direction to any of my players that I switch control to are my main gripes. But hey, at least I can actually play this game...

Bought it through Steam, it wouldn't stop crashing right from the off, it bluescreened my PC several times, it hung randomly, NPCs would go nuts and the gun you were holding would flicker with a shell next to it. But the bits that did work were very good. I am a bit p**sed off with Steam, seeing as I can't get a refund for an obviously broken product. Isn't there a law against that? I wanted to return the complete mess that was Brink, but you can't with Steam. And am I right in thinking the moment you pre-order it, they take your money even though the game isn't out yet? I get on fine with Steam in the main, but the whole refund issue is starting to putting me off.

Is the console versions getting patched? I want this game so bad but I don't buy games on release anymore. What's the point? Play an inferior version of a game for double the cost? No thanks. Not a single release this year will be day one

This is typical PC gaming bull$h!t and one of the many reasons that make gaming on the PC suck, the games don't work!! Besides the devs not giving a damn about PC gaming, whoever reviewed this game should be ashamed of themselves!! CVG gave this heap a 8.9/9.0!! If scores like this aren't proof that these reviews are full of $h!t and just can't be taken seriously nothing will! There is no reason the gamer should have to find out like this that a game is this f*kd up if it had been reviewed by so called reputable gaming sites!

It's much harder to get a game working perfect for a platform on which even identical machines are not the same, developers simply can't test every hardware, software and driver configuration.
I pre-ordered Rage and haven't really been able to play it due to texture problems, but so far I haven't thrown a hissy fit and thrown my copy away or returned it, I haven't even been mildly cross.

You also have to remember that Rage is running on new tech so id don't know what problems they're going to run across, although it could have been avoided if they had done some beta testing with something like a cut down multiplayer mode much like they did with Q3Test.

So, if you couldn't read between the lines it basically means that the reviewers could only play and review the game on PC's that id had configured themselves which were obviously configured to make the game work without problems and show the game in its best light. id did this because they knew the game was broken and didnt want everyone to know about it without selling a s**tload of copies first the dirty bastards.

Too bloomin late really. Just finished the game where there is more blue in the driving sections because it can't be bothered loading textures (even though I have a SSD that shoves data out at 550mb/sec !). May have one more play of the end just to see what the BFG shot looks like (usually eye candy).

Its taking up a quarter of my HD and is soon to be backed up and gone ready for Batman. More than like more other stuff too for its bloatedness !

Well its mugs like you that they are catering for now it seems, those who accept products not fit for purpose. People seem to think its OK because its a piece of software, if it was something physical like a toaster or even if the DVD was scratched and was unplayable you would take it back straight away and demand a refund/replacement. But its OK, its just a game, we can all wait a few months for a patch to hopefully sort it out don't worry. In the mean time they already have my money and couldn't give a s**t.

The problem with Rage over any other game released is the fact that it actually doesn't work properly/at all for the majority of gamers who bought it. According to Carmack himself its gamers with AMD graphics cards that are worse off... now considering AMD and Nvidia are the only two major gfx card manufactures your looking at 50% (depending on sales of each brand obviously) of gamers who are having major problems. That percentage is unacceptable and should be unacceptable to to those involved in making the game as well if they had any pride in their work.

Anyway, I'm done with this now and I hope you enjoy the game when you actually get it to work properly.

I will probably pick the game up at some stage but i'm in no hurry and it will be during a big sale. id haven't made a great game since quake 3 IMO.

Erm yeah.. I recently just got the game on for PC to see what the fuss was about and I guess I'm one of the few who have it working properly. I could make a reference to console flaws as a way to zing you but.. I'm not that ignorant.

Yeah that's right all PC gamers spend upwards of 1k on their PC's and also folk out £300 a year to make it go faster

Not that PC gamers would complain as I'll think we can all agree that when games are made properly they look better, load faster, have better controls and can do 1000+ more things than a 360. :D

The pc version will get sorted sooner or later and when it is you will in my opinion be in for a treat. Cheer up everybody and do not get so stressed. After all this is a fun, relaxing pastime/hobby.

Why do people continue to make excuses and defend $h!tty products and terrible performance just because they purchased said products? There is no way that this game deserves an 8.9! "If" they were forced to play in a controlled enviroment then that should've reflected in the score as well and should've been mentioned. The reviews nowadays are meant to "sell" these games rather than give an accurate account of the quality of the product. Carmack himself has denounced his own game as a "cluster f*k" and verbally assaulted the PC again as usual. The PC continues to get shoddy verions of games that add to the poor reputation of the platform. The quality control on the system is absolute garbage. Every major PC release this year has been plagued by problems, Crysis 2, Witcher 2, ect! I personally am tired of this kind of $h!t and will always speak up about it wherever and whenever I see it. As far as "I" am concerned, iD software and CVG should be embarrassed  and Rage is of dubious quality until proven otherwise.

Dude, read the whole thread and you will clearly see that I am far from defending "the product I have bought" or even making excuses like you seem to think I am. The fact is that the reviewers are not going to mention problems they didn't encounter are they? So if they didn't encounter any problems how is it their fault? They weren't to know the game was broken and unplayable for half the people that were going to buy it.

I'm not defending Rage by any stretch of the imagination, I commented on here to do the complete opposite in fact. I actually agree with what your saying about the devs/publishers and the total lack of quality or even care given to their PC releases. Its just that you're also lashing out at the reviewers and you don't agree with the score they gave whereas I don't blame the reviewers at all and couldn't give a flying f**k what scores it was given, I just wanted a playable game on release is that too much to ask for these days.

So to summarise, we both dislike Rage and the cockend that is Mr Carmack? Yes? Good, they deserve it.

Not everybody buys a new graphics card that often. Some are perfectly fine in having their current one for quite a while.
Not everybody is stupid enough to allow so many viruses to infect their computer and any basically intelligent person can get a decent enough anti-virus.
It's not difficult to simply click a few times on a file to update.
It's not difficult to adjust sliders and other options in a game on the PC.

If there is anyone here who has anything to learn, it's you. If any of the above are that much of a daunting effort for you, I'm surprised you can push the buttons on your controller.
