Microsoft Research reveals futuristic Kinect interface tech

Turn any surface into a touch panel with Kinect and a projector

Microsoft Research has revealed an amazing new experiment that uses Kinect and a clever projector to turn any surface into an interactive touch-based interface.

As you'll see in the demo video below, the new Omnitouch system lets the user operate a virtual touch panel on anything from their arm or hand to a wall or desk in front of them.

What's really interesting is how a panel can be assigned to a moving object and the system automatically adjusts the projection to stay with the object.

It detects multi-point touch and can even use multiple surfaces at ones. No more reading - just watch and want one...

    Cool.

I have a new slogan for Kinect:

One small step for party games, one giant leap for shoulder mounted laser targeted rocket launchers.

Kinect tech is brilliant and has lots of exciting applications it seems in every other industry but video games

Microsoft's plans to bring interactive TV in with shows like Sesame Street where viewers can interact and wear virtual costumes is a wonderful idea. I can see it having even greater mass appeal than the Wii did.

    Especially late at night

The idea with these sort of videos is usually: "Hey! Look at this cool thing we made! Now please give us money so we can make it 5-10 smaller and cheaper so we can all be rich!"

Put eight or sixteen of these in a room.
Throw in the same number of projectors.
    You got yourself a holodeck!

Most of it can be shrunken down to just a few lenses and wiring interlaced in your jacket :)

    My prediction... GET F*CKED... :)

That is a perfect summary of human nature. New and advanced tech? Write a swear word or draw a one eyed yoghurt chucker with it
