MS shows another amazing Kinect experiment

Newtech redefines the meaning of 'sandbox'

Microsoft Research has really been hard at work with Kinect lately, and here's another one of its experiments.

Kinect Screenshot
The contraption in the video below is called the HoloDesk, and uses a projector, a Kinect and a 'beam splitter' to create the illusion that you're manipulating 3D objects below the sheet of clear glass.

Here's what MS says about the device: "HoloDesk is a novel interactive system combining an optical see through display and Kinect camera to create the illusion that users are directly interacting with 3D graphics. A virtual

image of a 3D scene is rendered through a half silvered mirror and spatially aligned with the real-world for the viewer.

"Users easily reach into an interaction volume displaying the virtual image. This allows the user to literally get their hands into the virtual display. A novel real-time algorithm for representing hands and other physical objects, which are sensed by the Kinect inside this volume, allows physically realistic interaction between real and virtual 3D objects."

This comes after MS Research last week showed how the Kinect could be used to turn any surface - from your hand to a wall or desk in front of you - in a touch-screen-style surface.

Fascinating stuff. Now, makes some games with it, MS.

Wow  Last line sums it up well though.

Also ......... well, it kind of looks dodgy. That whole fondling motion? "what the hell you up to!? Ah I'm just playing with my balls!" Yeeeeeah, this game needs work.

Pretty cool, still needs some development time as it looks kinda glitchy. If they came up with a better display style for this it could be cool. It's an awkward positioning in how you have to grab below the plane of glass. I can see people pulling a "throw the wiimote" and jerking upwards into the glass.

    Things realised today: -

Kinect is scarily good (actually, I probably already knew that.)
The PC, in all its myriad forms is, and will always be, the second best console. It's easily better than anything from the current gen though.
The ever eroding (in both senses?) cachet of 'Microsoft' is Microsoft's only weakness.
America will out, and no-one, least of all Nintendo, should be surprised.

Imagine a God game like populous or from Dust you are God and using the hand of God mode you could pick up enemys or flick them perform miricles.
Another brain wave how about a Halo game 1st person view using a hologram as a 3d map or even control a ship/mech in holographic 3D. :P

Wow.....not the biggest kinect fan in terms of gaming, but gosh darn it the tech itself is brill!

Well that was awesome; however with the amount of space and equipment it needs, it's still a little impractical.
